i started giving the event a miss when i think the entry climbed to r100 a few years ago. i have raced over these roads so many times over the years that it did not seem worth the effort/money. so i will do the club 16 k TT on saturday at a cost of R0.00

i see a few other events are also following suit and charging entry fees outside the norm of the ppa events.

Statement from the 99er website:

Why is the entry fee for the Ninety Niner higher than for other funrides / Races?

The answer to this question is quite complex. Please read through the whole list below for the full picture.

The Ninety Niner is much more than an average fun ride. Putting on such a high quality event, especially one with lots of great prizes, costs us more to do. We are very proud that the vast majority of riders agree it is well run and offers great value as well.

Every rider having entered (not physically taking part) for the long distance must be timed by RaceTec. The organizers have to pay extra for this feature. Only 2 of the many cycling events in the Western Cape has this extra expense!

The cycling committee decided not to charge extra for online entries, and as a result we lose about 15% of the income generated this way. The percentage of cyclists making use of this feature for our event has increased dramatically over the last two years. Again the host organization must take the knock for this potential loss. The host pays 10% of ALL online entries, PLUS R5 for every long distance entry! This is a massive overhead for which we have to lift the fees for.

Many of the services we offer to cyclists are not found at a standard "Funride". This includes:

A Goody bag to the first 3000 finishers, which contains useful items plus a snack, a drink, etc. (Valued at R120)

High value performance prizes to the top cyclists in no fewer than 18 categories, with a total value of well over R20 000. This is probably the third highest in the Western Cape!

High value lucky draw prizes for which ALL participants are eligible.

Since 2003 there has been TWO separate prize givings, to give a fairer spread of prizes amongst the two shorter routes and the long route. These prizes in the past - included a Spa-pool valued at R18 000, a motorcycle valued at R7 500, no fewer than FOUR brand new bicycles, the normal 20 odd hampers, and many others. A comparison with the prize giving of a standard "Funride", where gift vouchers and prizes totalling hundreds or maybe a few thousand rand and maybe one bicycle proves the difference between them! Prizes vary from year to year. The organizers attempt to grow the prizes consistently.

We offer a free cycle park with security, and free cold showers for both genders. As far as our knowledge goes, this is not found at any other Fun Cycle event in the Western Cape.

The medical facilities are normally of very little interest to the average cyclist, until he or she is involved in a crash or other medical situation! Our medical facilities are second to only the two major events in the Western Cape (with triple and 12 times our number of participants).

Each one of the three distances has at least three vehicles involved for support: one Route Indicator to ensure that leading bunches do not take any wrong turns, a Midsweeper to pick up problem cases in the centre of the field, plus the Rearsweeper vehicle travelling behind and supporting the last riders.

I was thinking of gate crashing the ride 2 km from the start!

Or lets really stir......... Any low seeded person not riding can give his number and chip to me and I'll ride him into a much better Argus seeding!
