Hey guys, I am overseas at the moment and am considering buying a Garmin Edge 500 bundle off CRC as I will not have to pay postage or any taxes, so three questions

- If I buy it off CRC, will it come with Maps for SA? if not, are these maps easy to get and how much are they?

- How much does the Edge 500 bundle go for in SA? Dont really have access to prices at the moment

- Lastly, is the Edge 500 a good buy? Would you recomend anything else?

The Edge 500 doesn't have maps. Only the 705 and 800.

I think about R3.5k bundled.

I have one and I would highly recommend it.

You will need a SA Mapset if you want to use the Edge 500 with Training Centre or Mapsource on your PC.

Mapsets alone cost R999-00 for the first mapset, and the following mapsets in that year are free.

They are available from any good store that stocks Garmin products.

Alternatively the mapsets can be downloaded at www.garmap.co.za

You can also download WebUpdater, which is used to upgrade the firmware of your device free of charge.

Before purchasing your mapset, register your Edge on the Garmap site, and you may then qualify for a discount of R650-00, resulting in the mapset costing you R349-00.

You cannot load routes, nor do routing/route recalculations on the 500.

If merely want to see where you've gone, use SportTracks. It will show you on Google Earth/Maps where you've been.

ok great. i've found sport tracks to be more than adequate for what I've tracked with my cellphone. I'd definitely used that.

I'm just trying to work out now whether to go for the polar cs400 or edge 500. they both seem to have similar functions except for the gps in the e500.
