I dropped my chain twice today and the chain managed to damage some of the sprocket teeth in the cassette, when it managed to get jammed between the chainstay and front chainring.

Do I only replace the cassette or do I need a new chain as well to avaoid damage to the new cassette?  The chain is still within spec...

If the chain is within spec, i.e. not elongated more than 1/16th of an inch over 24 links, it will not damage the sprockets.

You dont say what type of damage you incurred on the sprockets, but you can also try and bend the damaged cogs on the sprocket, I can't see what wont work.

I think it could be a combination of both. Willehond is VERY strong.

Ha ha, I WISH!  No not strength, I had my bike serviced about 10 days ago and the front derailleur seems to be downshifting too far which drops the chain.  It happened once before the race and twice during the ride.  I tried to get the chain back on by shifting while riding, but only manged to jam it underneath between the chainstay and chainring.  When that happened there was a lot of crunching of gears (eina!)  and that must have caused the damage.

Johan, the sprockets aren't bent, but the teeth have little burrs which make the chain jump all over the place.  Hence my fear of damaging the chain (and by implication my new cluster with the damaged chain)

You can safely file off the burrs, with no ill effect. You'll find that the sprockets are extremely hard through. If you have a Dremel, use that instead of a file. Even if you replace the cluster for now because you haven't got the tools at hand, keep the other one and operate on it later on. If you're in the area (Midrand), I'll even do it for you.

Thanks Johan' date=' no Dremel, but for now I'll just replace the cluster and hang on to the cluster.  Thanks for the advice.[/quote']

replace and hang onto it? which teeth were damaged? its an odd happening

Middle sprockets got damaged - 4 of them.  Agree it was weird as I am not used to burrs on a sprocket.  Will try to get some pics of it if I can get the camera to behave!

Not good at all! Do you think the limit screw is just simply not adjusted correctly? But then surely it would come off everytime you went from big to small.

Not sure if it relates to the limit screw, but what I do know is that I have never dropped a chain whilst shifting down on the front derailleur.  Suddenly it is hapening and buggering up my race.  So what do I do to change it, completely change my shifting style because of the change in my equipment?  IMHO a chain should never be dropped in normal operation if your setup is correct.  Might have been a knock against the deraileur or setup issues.  In the end all I want is for it never to happen again.  It sucks!!!
