2 x 10 vs 3 x 10

Sounds suspiciously like the big wheel 'scam' ;)

You do realise that this could turn in to making your name gat.

The scam has been around for a long time, it's the public who are scamming themselves.

But what cluster do you run? 32 or 34?

36! But I do ride a 29er.

Some investigation...

SRAM is available in 26/39, 28/42 or 30/45 and 11-32, 11-36

Shimano: 42/32/24 and 11-36, 11-34 or 11-32

The SRAM 42/28 with the 11-36 combo would give you similar ratios to the Shimano triple with a 11-36 so there may be some merit in the 2x10 thing...

Me - I'll stick with my "safe" gear choice. I think there are some races where I would miss the 4 tooth difference between SRAM and Shimano.

Ideally (I guess) you'd have 2 2x10 cranks and change them depneding on the race but with a triple you don't have to choose.

You realise you could never be seen on a 29'er.

That's no joke  but I also can't be seen with a power balance band, bar ends on risers, compact crank, hydration pack on a road bike ;)

But a 36 x 26 is only 11 difference according to ichnusa

Hey Compact cranks rule :)

Now why dont they make XX in a 3 x 10....... I want all XX but I will now have to run a X0 crank and left shiffter....

 :(

Marketing, they want everyone to buy 2 x 10 first, once the market is saturated they will introduce something new or something regurgitated like XX 3 x 10

I never new my Gran but I'm glad I've got a grannie with me when I ride everythime.

THe role of granny is controvertial

Just like the matric bully does not want his mommy kissing him goodbye at the school gates, so it is with a granny gear. Very few "self" loving roadies will admit ever ever ever needing to lean on Granny. This they do by leaving her at home. THey however are the one's wimpering "mommY' when they race at Sabie or do a three day unsupported tour of the Drakensberg.

Rather be a mountie and love your granny. There is no shame in this intimacy. Ry jou ouma.

Right...ichnusa doesn't have a 24 tooth granny on his list.

Difference between lowest gear on 10spd Shimano 24x36 and lowest gear on SRAM XX 28x36 is 25cm...

or 16% in real numbers.

If you use a 22x36 then the difference is 30cm or 20%.

Most of the time a double would be fine but when the legs are dying and the gradient is hectic I'd like to be pedalling 16 or 20% faster.

Each to their own I say though - if you like to diesel along ala Ullrich style then a double is perfect for you - if like me you believe that spinning saves your legs then a triple is the right way to go.

The only issue I have is if people buy doubles because they're trendy or because they reckon they earn brownie points for being real men or because they don't actually understand how ratios work.

For everyone else - choice is wonderful. Make yours :)

I went 2 x 10 on my 29er... DAM, I got a 27/40 crankset, let me tell you its fine here on the highveld, but no good for vicious climbs, its on an 11-36 cassette, the closest to granny this bike has is the 22(f)-28® of a 26 inch bike.

I am looking at the second crankset option of 24/36, for Sabie, Sabie X, and the like...

For now I just suffer...or push..
