depends on what you plan to ride. If it has hills in it or you have weanie legs take granny with. However, the hard core answer is all you need is one gear, stop being a poofter, buy a single speed and never have to ask again.

Which gear should that be?

does not matter it will always be the wrong gear. Either too light or too heavy........

And I thought you had the answer

I really don't undestand the 2x10 phenom...

A granny weighs maybe 80g with bolts and stuff - it WILL save your life one day (Clarens come to mind as one of the other posters said).

The risk of dying far outweighs the extra 80g - just ask my partner at Sabie X...

Now why dont they make XX in a 3 x 10....... I want all XX but I will now have to run a X0 crank and left shiffter....

It's an easy formula (and old trick):

- Create new product line that makes 'old' redundant

- Make propaganda to 'help' the consumers believe its better and they really need it.

- Get your sponsored pros using it to help your 'cause'

- Hope they fall for it, all goes well and your bottom line fattens up

Sounds suspiciously like the big wheel 'scam' ;)

I like the 2 X 10 for many reasons.

My main reasons are as follows, chain line, I have a better chain line on my 2 X 10 than I ever had on a 3 X 10.

I use my entire cassette as my gear ratios are better.

Because my gear ratios are better, I pedal more effectively.

I never used my granny blade.

I actually think they shot themselves in the foot going 2x10 only. The majority of mtbers need the 3x10. I reckon I'm a bit of a hero on a bike and I was crying for my granny at Clarens (the hectically muddy conditions caused my granny to suck like mad so I couldn't use it).

Sabie X I used my granny A LOT!

Any proper XC course is at least 40% granny.

@kosmo - quite right sir.

I am not saying there is something wrong with x0, but I dont want XX everywhere else and only x0 left shiffter and 3 bladed x0 crank.

But what cluster do you run? 32 or 34?

I always thought that there was some sanity in the 2x10 thing.... :D

For 90% of races I'd agree with you but it's that little 10% that gets you.

You did some of the XC nationals last year - did you seriously not miss your granny?

You're a freak :D
