I just received my 20t cog today and installed it on my SS MTB and discovered to my pleasant surprise that I no longer need my tensioner.

Diamondback Apex 19inch frame

38t front Blackspire chainring

20t gusset cog with spacers

Now I can go back to Teak Place and not die up the hills with my 38-18

Anyone else found a magic gear?

My magic gear is the one that my DA derailler settles on when my legs feel all nice and comfy again.

Why on earth would youu want to only have 1 gear?

Haha, check out the other SS forums and websites and you'll see!

For me it's the same as a diver freediving rather than scuba diving.

It's a simpler, quieter, more challenging, more pure, lighter, more reliable riding experience.

Try it!

On my old 2000 model Trek 32-15 worked perfectly with no tensioner. Havent found a perfect ratio for my curent SS that I am also comfortable riding.

Yah...with a Hilux any gear works...apparently they can handle a 1000nm of torque. I was told this when I built up my Willys with a Chevy V8

Magic gear looks great, but in my experience does not work well for long, as your chain stretch, you loose tension, and you cannot easily set the tension again.

you do have a point, I guess once my chain stretches I'll have to put my tensioner back on....

Yup, chain stretched slightly, needed to put the tensioner back on. Doh!

At least this time it pushes up on the chain, not down on it, wrapping it around the cog a bit more....apparently that's better.

I also fine-tuned the chainline as I was getting a bit of chain-skip while standing and pedaling over the rough stuff. I also noticed that either my chainring or cog isn't round and my chain tension fluctuates.....
