Hi there.

Just a quick question :

I was very foolish and rode the Carnival City while I had a bit of a flu , fever and muscle ache , so I didn't really expect to have a good time (HR hitting 178 in the 1st 30 seconds already) etc. Apart from the fact that I just wasn't strong enough to keep up with any group and bonking big time at the 80km mark , it was total system shutdown , muscle cramps , severe fatigue , loss of concentration and pedaling to the finish line at a pace of 19km/h etc.

I have heard people mention in the past that after such a big bonk it's not a good idea to get on the bike too soon afterwards as some damage occurred to the body , is this true or should I give myself some rest to recover before getting back on the bike and if so how long should I stay off the bike ?

Thanks for the feedback.

Bonking in the cycling sense is usually when you've ridden long and hard and completely depleted your glycogen stores.

In British terms bonking is having sex. So if you see me on the bike having a smoke you know that i'm training after bonking.

You've ridden whilst sick & came undone.

In terms of coming back after being sick, you should listen to your bod & build up slowly.

If you are competitive (& 99% of us are, with varying levels of justification) this will prove to be virtually impossible and things will take time with a couple of setbacks with you training too hard too soon.

Basically - suck it and see.

After hitting the wall(bonking) one day off the bike sould be fine. eat to get the carbs back, But if you are sick? Hel stay of the bike and get better first, 1-2 weeks,

Agree. If your glycogene (spelling?) level are topped up you are ready to go again. Max 24 hrs

Careful there, benadeja...

Listen to your body.

Ignore your ego.

As you wrote, you were foolish.

At least 7 - 10 days, I'd say, away from any riding or intense exercise.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, start with easy rides and monitor how you feel. Then gradually build intensity.
