Ok, so what is compatible and what isn't.

Can I, for instance, run Sram shifters and rear derailleur on Ultegra Front derailleur, cassette and chain, or do I have to change entire drivetrain,

Had Record going on a Dura-ace cassette for many years and was smooth as silk, with no adverse effects.

Looking to take the leap....

I'm keen on hearing the answer to this too.

I think you could probably get away with Sram shifters and RD, and Shimano for the rest. (definitely seen this on MTB but not road yet)

Also, are 7900/6700 Shimano shifters compatible with 7800 FD's + RD's + brakes.?

Sram and Shimano cassettes are completely interchangable. In fact, many bikes that are equiped with Shimano have a Sram cassette as standard. I've heard that you can run a Shimano f/d with Sram shifters, but definately not a rear derailure.

Eugene's post is 100% correct....

But I beg to ask the question...... Why not just come right over to the Sram Family  , leave the Shimano stuff behind. I made the move and my word, have not regretted it for a day....

Shimano rear shifter works on a 1:2 ratio - this every 1mm moved on the shifter moves 2mm at the rear derailleur - thus softer shifting

Sram moves 1:1 - thus 1mm at shifter movers 1mm at derailleur - chrisper shifting

All front derailleurs are 1:1

Chains & cassets are inter changeable as long as they are the same speed, 9 or 10 speed.

Hope this answers your question.

the big question is just how serviceable are SRAM road shifters. I just had my DA7700 rear shifter give up the ghost with no options of service or repair. Can you buy spares for SRAM road shifters ?

you can buy replacement levers and brake blades for the shifters - pricing is almost the same as a new pair of shifters though... not really serviceable.

You must run:

Sram Shifters with Sram RD

Shimano Shifters with Shimano RD

FD's are interchangable as are cassettes and chains (not 7900 directional chain)

Brakes are interchangeable but will not operate 100%

Leonard Zinn runs Campy levers with his Sram red - google it to see how.

It's possible to run campy cassettes with Sram/Shimano - but not 100%

Many of the Pro's run Shimano chains with SRAM group set

Without any issues.?

I'm considering the same switch ... either Ultegra 6700, or Dura Ace 7900 shifters wth 7800 group (although 7900 may be too pricey).

For those who consider this a down grade, I agree, the 7800 shifters work great.!

But since I've been riding the SRAM on my 2nd bike, the 7800 hoods feel really uncomfortable ... perhaps the newer Shimano models will be a better fit for my hands.
