  1. Hello Heather - how many bikes?
  2. Haha thanks for being a crash test dummy for the rest of us
  3. Interesting re the pack… I am possibly the hottest and sweatiest human being in the world. This year I decided to buy and use an USWE pack against my exact thoughts as per Zebra’s quote. All I can say is that I have performed way, way better being able to carry 3.5 - 4 liters of liquid and drink way more. So use Zebra’s post and mine as a warning to try all the different options / extremes and do what works for you. Definitely do at least one 3 day stage race before. Cape Pioneer Trek would be even better if you can.
  4. Best case 🤣
  5. I personally, for under R 1 000 a month, would engage with a good coach. I’ve started with a coach here in KZN for the last three months and the difference it has made to my riding is massive. Keeps you accountable, makes it easy (just sync your Trainingpeaks to your Garmin and your sessions are ready) and you can learn so much from the right person (strategy, pacing, nutrition etc etc).
  6. I also hugely regret selling my Tallboy 4...good luck!

    Berg n Bush

Back from an amazing Berg & Bush experience. A very special event - the location, facilities, camping, food, service, attention to detail are tops. There is a wonderful feeling of calm that friends and I all commented on - the fact that one sets up and stays in place lets the mind relax and we really loved the chance to sit, slow down and catch up. The landscapes are spectacular, real African bushveld with tawny grasslands, thornveld and rocky aloe strewn hillsides. There is a palpable sense of the history of the area; the looming presence of Spioenkop that overlooks the camp, reinforced in the fascinating and tragic tales told by Ray Heron and brought home in the last moments of the race while riding past the memorials and mass graves of one of the deadliest acres in the history of warfare. The trails are sublime - nearly all of the climbs are gradual and have been engineered to be rideable and almost enjoyable - The Boer Route up the North of Spioenkop is unbelievable. Rolling gravel roads, wandering jeep track, sweeping singletrack and truly some of the most insanely fast, flowy, long and rewarding downhill trails I've ever had the privilege of riding. The headwinds this year were proper, but we had them mostly to our back for the last 10 km, shunting us along a grey ribbon of swoopy singletrack through the veldt for one last cup (or two) of chocolate milk at the end. As @Kylie has so eloquently written before (nice to meet you on the route!) - just enter this race if you haven't done it - there aren't many elite level riders but us enthusiastic amateurs still raced our asses off and there were plenty of more chilled people enjoying the trails, the views and the snacks at the water tables.

It goes from near Champagne Sports Resort back to Em’seni. Not a loop, not the normal Day 1 route from Sterkfontein Dam.

  10. Amazing - good luck and enjoy every minute - even the hard parts.

Your write ups are a big reason for me riding - see you there!

I see that they've had to change Day 1 from the epic drop off the escarpment to a route from Champagne Sports to Emseni, due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak in cattle in KZN. Bleak but understandable if one wants to avoid hundreds of MTB tyres tracking contaminants from one farm to another. I assume that the day will be similar to the last day of Go2Berg, but in reverse. We shall see, regardless any day on a bike is a good one...
  14. MVDP is my favourite road rider, but his performances on flat bars show that even with phenomenal general bike handling skills, you cannot pitch up at the top end of MTB and expect to compete. I hope that he either lets go of his Olympic gold MTB plan, or spends some time prepping properly with a skills coach for the specific needs of MTB racing these days. It would be horrible to see a generational talent sidelined for a long period / with a permanent injury from dabbling in a secondary interest...
  15. https://michaelkummer.com/ultrahuman-vs-oura-ring/ And check out DC Rainmaker’s page I’m sure there will be very in depth reviews there.
  16. Three settings - not sure on speed but lowest is a slow jog, middle is probably 13-14km / h when I go for a run and he joins me. Fast setting is full face helmet and wheelie territory - must be 20km/h. Epic things and so good for the skills / independence and parents being able to go for a little kids ride without the moaning and inevitable bike carrying 🤣
  17. They’re made by a company called StayCyc and branded KTM so no issue I doubt. Got the 16 inch StayCyc - best thing ever for the 4.5 year old

I’ll be there. First one. Frothing 🤘
  19. Not sure if anyone else has just discovered the Instagram coverage on the _sani2c stories. It is incredible. Two very knowledgeable and entertaining young lasses on motos in the thick of things - so good!
  20. Any Hub inmates riding this year? I’ll be there ✊
  21. I recently bought an USWE pack from a German site and it was in my hands in less than 72 hours. Couldn't believe it!
  22. Sorry for my ignorance, would us mortals be allowed to race this in say, the old bastard 40-45 category? Might have just got a serious goal to aim towards...
  23. Oke must clean that whole sector by himself with a toothbrush next year before the race.
  24. Ciovita and The Hub are completely different of course.
