Heh, Bimbos in Northcliff/Cresta. Many a dodgy burger laaaate there, tasty under the circumstances, but probably lethal to any normal person. Amazing how many stout5atte there are in the cycling crowd

Yeh I remember Truth, it was in the old snake park or something in Midrand...

Oh yeah, the Doors ha ha. In my experience, the scalier the bar, the more fun you had. Those shiny vodka bars, like Cloud 9 down in Umhlanga, were nowhere near as much of a jol.

I think we used to call the resultant damage of a night out 'being caked in scrotch rot'.
  7. Been avoiding this thread for ages, but visiting and not having a bike, I purchased some running shoes and have been doing half an hour a day for the past 10 days. Running truly does suck, but at least it is fast and easy to get a quick workout to compensate for all the beer, boerie, wine women and song...

Just your tekkies? I'd be a sweaty disgusting mess from head to toe but the real filthy feeling was inside.

    Who remembers?

Spent a whole night on the top floor once, talking nonsense. Couldn't believe it when the sun came up, felt like 5 minutes.

Heh, I was actually more Maritzburg based, so now Hyrule's mention of Crowded House reminded me of Stables, Take5 (own up - who did the palm tree?) that place in Commercial St the name of which I can't remember, Buzz Bar (Zzubrab we used to call it), World's View sunrises, Breakfast Rock whisky missions, digs in Scottsville (Phipson Lane, sitting on the roof drinking beers), learning to play pool at the Vic Club, the Basement (what kind of beers do you have? Black Label, you ungrateful bast@rd!), that other jol under the old Ster Kinekor building which used to play The Cure quite a bit, smoking goods and drinking ciders up at Roy Hesketh racetrack, stumbling home from town past the graveyard up Commercial/Durban Road, dudes catching on to trucks in town at a red, hoping for another red up in Scottsville, hanging out at Churchills with the owner Bruce and narrowly avoiding being stabbed by Eloise Driver (she hit me with a motorbike helmet, stabbed some other oke also named Donovan, weirdly, a week later)....man, those were the days.

    Who remembers?

That was fun. And Gecko Lounge. And Hideout. And Stonewater. And ESP and that other massive jol in Randburg where they used to have Slippery n Wet, forget what that place was called. Crazy days and nights to be sure.
  14. Gay bars are often a whole heap of fun - and the same can be said for gay people. There's nothing to be afraid of...
  15. I think the crucial thing is that the other side has to voluntarily do pretty much the same thing, it won't work if it is ex parte...
  16. It's passe but happy wife certainly does equal happy life. Some while ago I realised something, my happiness doesn't matter at all, especially since we had our two boys; for a time I had laboured under the illusion that somehow, I deserved getting my way etc. Then I realised, nah, wait a minute, who cares if you don't like your job or if you feel like you need more time or some of this or that, or because you're the earner, you don't have to do a fair share of the 'child rearing'. Nobody, that's who, and whatever position you've put yourself in, it was you what done it. So I shifted my attitude to focus instead on my wife's happiness, taking more of the kids stuff off her hands (I am more or less sole breadwinner at the moment) like getting them ready for school in the morning, making brekkie, occasionally making dinner, etc. And also working hard to give the Mrs more 'her' time, like to go exercise or whatever. And going out for a meal or pub crawl and stuff like that, just the two of us. Anyway, the long and the short of it is that because I decided to forego my own happiness to focus on addressing my Mrs' needs and her happiness...well, I don't have to worry about my own happiness, because now she takes care of that with her whole heart. Maybe that's the way it is supposed to be. And there is often a wee bit of truth in the glib aphorisms we (wryly) use every day. Best of luck, BTW. Hectic what you're going through. And thanks for posting about it, truly helps maintain perspective for some of the other folk here, me included.
  17. I've been reading this thread with grim fascination since it started and have realised that you should never, ever drop your guard when it comes to your relationship. Haven't made changes per se, but have certainly been treating the Mrs with extra love and care. We've been together 14 years....want it to last forever.
  18. I'm signing up in 2019. Would have done next year, but away in SA for 2 months.
  19. Never mind that...how was Great Barrier and where are the pics!!!??
  20. Jealous. Have always wanted to go there on my boat.
  21. I was born in Grey's Hospital; the mansion belonged to George Grey, same guy as the hossie in Maritzburg was named for (he funded it). Also, if you go into the mansion, it is full of Zulu and other African mementos; Grey was a big colonial figure in NZ and SA...
  22. Very nice WP. Go to Kawau Island, short ferry trip out of Sandspit. It is by far my favourite Hauraki Gulf island, though I have yet to make it to Great Barrier. Motutapu is pretty cool though, nice picnic spots on it; Motuihe, you should go camp on (good fishing all around it) and then the ones slightly south of Waiheke - Chamberlins, Pakihi, Rotoroa - are also really special.
  23. Dude you are so doing it right. My weekend consists of a drive to Tauranga for a mate's bike store opening celebration, kids in the pool tomorrow at 10am followed by kids birthday party, gardening in the arvo, wine, Sunday a walk with my boys and probably to the beach. Come to think of it...I'm OK with that! - enjoy have a good one all.
