  1. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be, right? Actually I like to see those old colour schemes resurrected for BA's commemorative year. And $1m apiece is peanuts for the marketing budget anyway. Michael O'Leary gets Ryanair noticed by pissing off passengers and the EU commissioners. BA has chosen to remind people of a grand era of flight.
  2. Interesting article on the A380 story https://www.forbes.com/sites/petercohan/2019/02/14/how-boeing-lured-airbus-into-now-busted-a380/#12a4eced6c2a
  3. Don't forget Mariaan (of Suzelle DIY) - How to make a braai pie (see earlier post yesterday)
  4. You have a Capri? My 2nd car ever! Loved it. What model?
  5. The f-word - in Afrikaans or Irish, it's inoffensive, funny and expressive.
  6. Yes, it's rude but I still laughed. https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/my-fk-marelize-reaction-to-girl-riding-bike-into-rugby-posts-has-people-in-stitches-20190228
  7. Maybe that's where you have to decide whether your response is proportional to the threat.
  8. It's been mentioned a few times before - the reason the victim gets charged for shooting a criminal is simply because that's how the police have to process the case. The investigating officer can't make a call on whether the shooter was an innocent victim or bystander. That's up to the prosecutor, based on evidence that the police will gather in a formal and methodical process. The reality is that the prosecutor will invariably look at the merits of the case and decline to prosecute. The "victim" is then informed, without going to court and no stain on their record. I may be mistaken on some of the details, but that's (largely) how it plays out. Anyone else know the facts about this?
  9. It certainly does! So, between faulty lights and a pilot that says "Straight down all the way isn’t it? It is, yeah makes it nice and easy doesn’t it?" you have a recipe for a bugger-up. But notwithstanding the faulty taxiway aids, how could he not see the building ahead and realise he's too wide? And the aircraft was 23 years old anyway, so probably cheaper to scrap than rebuild?
  10. Amazing. Was it beyond economical repair, and if so why? I believe main spar damage can be terminal? Or was the plane at the end of life/lease or was it simply more cost effective to claim insurance and replace?
  11. Pretty much the same traveling time either way. If you want to use Gautrain then ORT. If you want to get out of the airport fast then Lanseria. And usually the flights to Lanseria are cheaper because lower landing fees(?)
  12. Qantas flew close over my house this afternoon. Checked on FR24 and it looked like all kinds of fun around ORT with flights stacking up and going around. Weather?
  13. Respect. Tough job, thanks for taking it on.
  14. Left hand denying what right hand just said? https://www.fin24.com/Companies/Industrial/saa-not-splitting-up-but-plans-to-change-operating-model-spokesperson-20190218
  15. What the bikers would call a "tank slapper". The shock loads on those tyres are beyond belief.
  16. So just re-arranging deckchairs on the Titanic? I hope Pravin can find time to get SAA some professional help. So many good people there, notwithstanding.
  17. Dang, it would make for a good Leon Schuster stunt - in a bus.
  18. Is this a good idea? Seems to me it could either increase costs (e.g. 3x duplicated functions), or make it easier to cull unprofitable business lines. https://businesstech.co.za/news/business/300158/saa-to-be-split-into-three-units/
  19. White, blue and gold - still one of the most striking colour combinations. Think of the Rothmans Racing or BOAC colour scheme. https://twitter.com/i/status/1097421199267823616 (how do I get these Twitter links to show an image?)
  20. Is that really the interior? And why am I even asking about a meme?
  21. Looks like a rectangular version of the Ponti City building in Hillbrow. Last time I heard it had developed a major garbage dump in the inner ground floor area as a result of trash being tossed from the upper floors. I wonder if the owners have fixed it yet?
  22. Every time I've landed like that on my bike it's ended badly.
  23. Appears to have been an engine test gone wild. But that's coming out of someone's pay packet.
  24. Not often that one can joke about aircraft incidents, so no hesitation in posting this "That will buff right out" item today. https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/article/2001312547/two-kenya-airways-aircraft-collide?fbclid=IwAR2qZz4udj-YwivHOMOv9Ambd7gE3aA3LaXMecUnH2RroTbwE5uCgwJZrFY
  25. That would be very cool. I understand the acronym is "Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim"?
