  1. Or install a locking mechanism on the overhead storage that operates in an emergency situation (with warning signs and red lights!).
  2. You need to watch this one on your big HD TV.
  3. Not sure if this has been covered recently (I'm reading the entire thread and it's long!)? I'm getting to the point in my running where I need to improve on a few things, like strength and speed. And it occurs to me that I need solid data to do that properly, such as HR and cadence readouts. My question regards running watches, wearable bands and smartphones. I don't have the budget for a good running watch (R2000+ ?) so I'm looking at used, or alternatively a wearable (Samsung Fit) tethered to my phone. I essentially want run data sent back to Strava, and also heart rate and cadence threshold alerts while running. Can I ask you experienced runners what works for you? Are tethered devices viable (they seem cheaper if you have the phone already), or do they come up short?
  4. I hated it and I thought the idea of "rebuilding" was ridiculous. But the really funny thing is that now I'm doing self-inflicted PT, with long runs everyday and HiiT calisthenics that are as nasty as anything the PTIs ever dished out. And I'm enjoying it. Life's funny that way. And looking back, now I'd have a very different attitude to exercise in the military. Youth is really wasted on the young.
  5. 80kms/week? Looks like I'll have to get moving then.
  6. Hi all Quick newbie intro here. This thread is really informative (started reading from the beginning!). I started running 4 months ago with C25K (9weeks) then went straight into C10K (6 weeks, completed 1 week ago). I've managed to avoid injuries so far by watching YouTube, getting good shoes (Asics, the Maxed shoes are cheap but they wear fast and started hurting me as the mileage went up) and lately putting a met pad in one shoe (fixed that issue fast). I'm quite surprised at how fast the mileage and speed is building weekly (though I keep the distance increases within 10-20%). This weekend was a real breakthrough as I hit PBs on 5km and 10km, and lost 2 pesky kgs. I've joined the Club Strava board (Graham), and I'm pleased to see myself in 5th today. Woohoo (while it lasts). Thanks for all the great info, and just maybe I'll join the marathon conversations sometime soon.
  7. Anyone watched these 'day in the life of a pilot" videos? I find them quite absorbing
  8. These simulations can get really hectic! In the Navy we used to have a simulator of a ship's interior taking hits from shellfire (with very loud sound effects) while seawater was pumped through "cracks" to flood it. Your job was to close the cracks and jam the bursting hatches while it happened. Standing there up to your neck in water with loud bangs, smoke and holes appearing below your feet made it pretty exciting.
  9. Can anyone offer advice on this question? My wife works as a teacher and her salary is well below the R500k threshold (teacher, of course). Her tax gets deducted and IRP5 has been issued, and theoretically she doen't need to submit a return. However, this year she took out a hospital plan (no medical via the school) and it's cost her about R15k in premiums. The payments are direct and don't appear on the IRP5. The question: assuming the school deducted correctly, is it worth submitting a claim via efiling for the medical expenses?
  10. Fighter has a happy face!
  11. Looks like TC's (?) helicopter from the Magnum PI of the 80s.
  12. I've just been given a family "heirloom", a yellowwood dining room table (round, 1.5m with imbuia base) and a matching set of yellowwood riempie chairs. It's been unused in the garage for years, and quite dirty. I believe the chairs and top were "sealed" but no more information on that. My question is, what's the best treatment for this set? I'm thinking of stripping the sealer (Nitromors?), cleaning/sanding(?) and then refinishing with Danish Oil (if I can find some). Any comments or suggestions on getting this back to it's original condition? Thanks
  13. Not to mention Defence budget cuts.
  14. This makes one so proud of our young people! https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/aircraft-assembled-and-flown-by-sa-teenagers-lands-safely-in-egypt-20190709
  15. That feeling you have, when: You've graduated from C25K to the 10k bridge program (halfway done) and you've just had good (for you) 9Ks on the prior 2 days, now it's the Sunday run and you've turned yourself inside out to go longer than 10Ks. You look at Strava on your phone as you finish and you see "press start". Embrace the Suck.
  16. Looking forward to this.
  17. A single manufacturer (Airbus or Boeing) to optimise/rationalise maintenance and training maybe?
  18. Interesting comments about SAA by Pravin Gordhan https://www.fin24.com/Companies/Industrial/gordhan-5-reasons-behind-saas-huge-losses-20190626 I think the people calling for it to be closed down need to consider the Unintended Consequences of that move. It won't serve as punishment for the people who caused the problems - they've moved on and are out of reach of our anger. I've met really dedicated and committed staff on SAA flights who are determined to create a great passenger experience, and people like them, and pragmatists like Gordhan, make me think this airline can be saved. Provided the ANC/government keeps out of it. Which they probably won't. The action of shutting it down will lead to short term cost avoidance, but what comes after? I'm pretty sure the competitors will take up the slack, and start hiking prices both locally and domestic. I'd hate to see that happen.
  19. Wow! Flight crew have some explaining to do.
  20. I think that explains everything then. Frankly I'd rather wait for a delayed flight than wonder if the plane is being maintained properly.
  21. Lanseria this time, ORT previously.
  22. Is Mango optimising their load factors at the expense of their passengers? For the 2nd time in a month my wife has been sent an SMS shortly before departure informing her of a delay. When I checked the flight stats page on the Mango website I saw the following (see image). It looks as if they're holding up passengers on the earlier flight and putting them on the last flight of the day. WTF?
  23. But Shameel Joosub at Vodacom says that the "effective price" of mobile has dropped, so you can't complain about pricing if you don't use the free SMSes.
  24. I imagine those pax were suitably dressed for disembarking. I made the mistake of failing to consider local conditions when I left SA in summer and landed in Denver in winter, in short sleeves and my jackets in checked luggage.
