  1. I made the change to LCHF nearly three weeks ago. Starting weight was 91.4kg (down from 94.6 a couple of months earlier), weighed in today at 90.0kg. My target weight is 80kgs. I'm actively avoiding carbs in the form of flour, bread, pasta etc, as well as sugar (although I do slip on occasion with a diet lemonade and Oros, and a couple of blocks of 70%choc). Beer has made way for whiskey and soda, or wine (1 unit per night). And I'm getting through more water than I've ever had in my life. I didn't really get carb flu (and I'm always fuzzy-headed, so I didn't get that either). In any case the weight seems to be going down, if a little slowly. Now, to the main issue. I've been off the bike for about 7 months, so last weekend I got going again with an old Trek 1200 roadbike that I refurbished. It's noticably heavier than my previous bikes, but I figured there's no harm in that if it's for the purposes of getting fit again. Ride 1 (Sunday) was a bit hard, as expected (35kms into the Cradle) average speed 20km/h. When I was fit that would have been around 28km/h. Tuesday morning I did a 1 hour out and back Cradle run, went little bit better. Yesterday I did a loop of 56km, in 2h50 (average 21km/h) and I was shattered for the rest of the day. I realise this lack of performance and discomfort has a lot to do with regaining fitness, and a bit due to the slightly heavier bike. I think the giant "bonk" I experienced towards the end had something to do with LCHF, as I only had coffee before, and water during. Now I'd like to ask for some advice, if you folks would be so kind. 1. Is it likely or possible that regular riding will accelerate the rate of weight loss due to calorie demand? Will it increase ketosis somehow? 2. I'm aiming to do the 94.7 again. From what I can gather reading through this thread, I won't have adapted by then (52 days to go). Do I train on water, or add carbs for longer or harder days (and will that break my LCHF program)? Edit: Found this useful post by DaleE (https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/125843-lchf-low-carb-high-fat-diet-ver-2/page-116?do=findComment&comment=2101996) which suggests that the way to survive riding at this time is to go really easy on rides. Only problem I can see is that my route in and out of the Cradle has a couple of hills that don't know this word "easy".
  2. Sometimes Karma needs to be a bit quicker
  3. At least he's stopped for the red light. And if he wants to go through the whole business of re-learning primary colours and numbers, and being fed by a carer then I guess that's his call.
  4. That gave me chills down my back! Awesome is an understatement.
  5. Senna, McLaren MP4/4 and rain. Nobody could beat that combination.
  6. Here's an interesting recipe for cauliflower as a mash substitute: http://deadspin.com/how-to-make-mashed-cauliflower-because-it-goddamn-tast-1443732709/@Sean-Newell (apologies for the spicy language)
  7. Approaching a line of orange traffic cones, what's this? Another JMPD roadblock! Just a sec, I got this little switch here. Awesome!
  8. Great story behind that plane http://p38assn.org/glacier-girl.htm
  9. Reruns later today and tonight
  10. Good work and thank you!
  11. Chain Reaction. They've usually got specials going on, although it gets tricky to find the right size when they go on sale. But even at their normal prices they're still fairly cheap.
  12. You just can't be visible enough out there, so I'm surprised by the number of riders I see out on the road every weekend wearing black (or very dark) kit. I know that most of the cycle shops have a very limited range of kit for sale, and by the time you've made your selection on size and affordability there's very little to choose from (and frankly, by that stage it's generally either plain ugly or mediocre quality). I've resorted to taking my chances with SAPO and Customs, and buying kit online. It's a bit risky for sizing, but at least there's choice, size and affordability. With some suppliers there's also the chance to check product reviews, which takes more risk out of the equation. I bought this Endura gilet recently for about R300. Good value and reasonably good quality. And it's bright! Why don't the kit manufacturers here make a range of high viz clothing?
  13. You're right there, only closed 917s raced at Le Mans. The last one to run there was in '81, ten years after the 917 bowed out. It was a Kremer special, updated for the current period. It looked really good too, but it never finished, unfortunately. (Interesting thing about this photo: In 1981 the prototype or Group C cars had to be open-cockpit, but clearly the 917 K81 isn't. What you can't see in the photo id that there's a slot about 20cm wide, running from the back edge of the rear-view mirror in the roof to the back end of the roof. Voila! Instant open top car!)
  14. That's a Porsche 936 from 1977, seven years later.
  15. Great post. Did anyone watch "Grizzly man" on DSTV yet? Morbidly fascinating.
  16. And if you're in the Mt Tam/Marin area then check out the Redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument. They're not the biggest in the USA, but they're still huge and old (one is about 1200 years old).
  17. Looks like something from Mad Max
  18. Those things don't look like much from a distance, until you get close up to them. Then you realise just how big they are! I read somewhere that the tip speed of the blade is around 180MPH and about 200 tons of air press on the blade every second with wind speeds of just 22 MPH. (You can do your own metric conversion, but it's still impressive).
  19. Uber huber
  20. Saudi Quattro - camel with 4 humps
  21. That's the part I've been wondering about. I can see how that might happen with honey (even as healthy as it is). But NNS? There is no glucose (or whatever it is that triggers the response) - surely it's just a taste enhancer? But maybe I should follow your lead here. I suspect the coffee connoisseurs prefer unsweetened anyway, so maybe they know something about enjoying coffee that I don't yet.
  22. I was wondering what to do about sugar substitutes, because I really like tea and coffee sweet. Tried stevia tablets, but the taste is not to my taste! Was wondering about using Canderel again, until I read this: http://www.minds.com/blog/view/39057/the-shocking-story-of-how-aspartame-became-legal So that's out too. (Is there anything Donald Rumsfeld has done in his career that isn't harmful to human life?) What's the thinking on honey for LCHF? BTW: I tried double fat Greek yoghurt with Nomu skinny this morning, mixing the powder directly into the yoghurt (not first blending into milk to make a paste, as I usually do). As long as you keep the hand mixer at low speed the dust cloud isn't too bad. The taste, however, is very different. Don't know why, but it came out really thick and tasting like chocolate mousse - no yoghurt taste at all. There's my new after dinner ice cream substitute.
  23. A really great era. And for sound they don't come much better than the Matra MS11. Remember hearing this at Kyalami (the real Kyalami, where they turned right at Leeuwkop, instead of left into the sad corporate wasteland it later became).
  24. Sigh. Another highly productive week. Not! Can't wait!
