  1. DUDE, please do not bring THAT much common sense to an argument of this nature! It is far more important that cyclists preserve the integrity of their image than attempt to ride a stretch of road safely for all concerned!
  2. Oi Batman, here's your kapow!
  3. Shot for the props, but nah, you got this one on your own brah!
  4. Forum speak is open to interpretation by the person reading it and rarely comes across with the actual intent of the person writing it, unless you're being completely blatant. (Anyone care to comment on how many hub arguments over the years have been just this misunderstanding?) Nothing wrong with feeling strongly about something, but know that you're not the first person to bring this stance towards the forum and this has been heatedly debated before. Most of us have changed much of our behaviour on the road because of what has been discussed here, once all the emotion has subsided, but many have also put family and friends to rest after they have done their best to protect the image of the cyclist to no avail! That's where it gets more difficult...
  5. This is getting so off topic... I thought roads are a resource the country provides for its citizens. You pay taxes for vehicles because of the impact these have on the maintenance requirement of the road itself. (Wonder how many bicycles it will take to create a pothole on a stretch of tar? Could be a license waiting to be put in place! Ever wondered why weigh bridges exist on the main highways?) If we use this line of reasoning you suggest, what are pedestrains supposed to do when they get to a road?
  6. I don't think I am better. I think I am human. Whenever I swing my leg over the bike, it is my full intention to have a really good time while on it and do my best to make it home in one piece, wearing a smile. There is no magic bullet that works well for every situation. Our greatest ally is to park the attitude and be respectful where we can, but constantly look out for our own safety as the reality is that no one else will do it for us.
  7. You don't know me from soap. You have no idea how I behave when I am on a bicycle or otherwise. Best you remember that about everyone you engage here that you have had no real life interaction with. Too much of the drivel that finds its way onto these pages is for the very issue you attempt to crusade. If you're so interested in the safety concerns of your fellow cyclists why are you so feverently trying to find fault with something they have been forced to do to survive on the roads? More so, if you feel that any of their cycling behaviour directly affects your safety on the road when you're cycling and not your own behaviour in the given situations that present themselves when you're on you bike, it's probably best you go back to playing golf. Some of us have been on the seat of a bicycle for many years and have witnessed more than we should at the hands of trying to preserve a so called image.
  8. Indeed, it's a very special kind of uncouth to arrive at a community as a noob and be this condescending Pabs. Properly poor form! Your next trip to Jozi, I dare you to go to the shop in question and go play your Cry me a river tune....
  9. You look good in yellow Pabs!! Not enough blue in your eye shadow though.... You play any tunes we will know?
  10. I don't think you do understand these sentiments. Have you got a child? Bury them after someone has ridden over them. For additional impact lose some of your closest mates through the same process and see if you're still going to campaign to have other cyclists ride in single file whenever they are on the road or whether you will deploy a sweep vehicle to drive behind you and your friends for safety, knowing that most of the motorists will be driving in such a way as to kill you, as you have lived through first hand. Until you know this yourself everything any of us have to say is simply irrelevant by comparison.
  11. Whilst you make a good point on the validity of the laws, the simple fact is that the majority of them are being broken by both cyclists AND MOTORISTS. The difference between who breaks them however has a very skew consequence. When cyclists break them, motorists are inconvenienced. When motorists break them EVEN when cyclists are obeying them, cyclists die, however obediant or correct their actions were. I can understand why a group of cyclists such as this cycle store, that have buried family members and close friends, would go to this extent to protect their passion and livelihood.
  12. That stretch is a complete joke. Besides whcih, our group rolled through there on Saturday and we're all to the left of the yellow line in what used to be remnants of the tarred road, dodging the shopping trolley mobile homes and other busy pedestrian traffic whilst passing pothole city but still not straying into the road at all. Some fellow cyclist type drives past slowly in his car with his window rolled down and shouts that we're the reason cyclists are hated.... When you're on a bike you never win! Rather be safe!
  13. There are too many variables at play to find a solution for this whole situation and we all know it is impossible to make everyone happy by doing anything in a certain way. Roads are a shared resource and we've all lost our sense of community in so many ways that it's easy to get on the roads and behave like a punk, in the way we drive and the way we cycle, showing blatant inconsideration. Everyone can argue the rights of this over the rights of that, but frankly I would rather be alive than right. Safety first, but surely there must be a way we can ride in a safer manner and engage traffic in a less hostile manner??
  14. Met eishhhh.... Freedom of choice is so last year eh! I'd like to buy back the time I spent reading this thread.... Ja, leave the office early and go riding will be appropriate punishment! Rouxtjie... "TRACK" (Where's my pomp?)
  15. Bikes have been the biggest part of our family. Busy turning a GS450x into a motard for short commuting to get around traffic. Grew up on MX. Looking SERIOUSLY forward to the release of the redone "On any Sunday"!
  16. And here's some results then. Fire gets 2 bronze medals in the first 2 events of 3 in the series!!!! WELL DONE!!!!! https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/track/medals-in-malaysia-for-national-track-team-r1412
  17. Whoop-WHOOP! That's Fire getting some bronze medals there!
  18. Metro train ticket for using the train both ways on the day is 40 South African Rands. (ZAR) That's for going in ahead of the race, where the start is literally 300 meters from the CBD end of line station and back to Newlands after you have spent some time in the hospitality area at the finish and then rolling back to the CBD station, which is roughly 4kms. (I live in the Claremont area and do this.) They have a special carriage for cyclists to climb on with their bikes on the day. No parking hassles and the train station in Newlands is easy enough to find!
  19. The Argus is a unique biking experience. You WILL get swept up in the whole atmosphere of 30 000 plus bikers riding around the peninsula on what is some of the most breathtaking roads and scenery on this ball we call earth! Yes, there are some challenges, but anyone who cycles moderately regularly will be able to make this ride, especially on the day with the turnout and inspiration that rides amongst you. You literally see people in all shapes and sizes and the greatest challenge will be riding harder than you are used because you see someone you believe you should be stronger and faster than, riding away from you! Unless of course you ride firmly with the goal of completing the ride AND enjoying it as a social experience at your own comfortable pace. If you maintain a 20km\h pace easily you are more than well prepared to line up on the day and come and enjoy this event with the rest of us cycling freaks! Next year will be my 15th completed one. P.S. Have you ever been to SA before? P.P.S. Do you do any mountainbiking too??
  20. That's an interesting perspective. Got some specific info you can shed on the statement I have put in bold? Hannes from extreme lights is a regular contributor to this forum, so it would be useful for him to know this and address that. I have not had battery life issues with mine on any of my rides. I use mine for sub 3hour rides in the early morning or night time.
  21. ^ ^ ^ What he said! I have an extreme light which I have used for 18 months with zero issues that has beat my every expectation. The most annoying part is the maid has packed it away somewhere and I have turned the place upside down trying to find it again to no avail. I predict a new purchase from Hannes at extreme lights rather soon...
  22. REALLY interested in this bike and similar options!
  23. Met eish, some of you are committed to this eh!! Inspiring though and just sent the better half an email with what our coming weekend will entail. Found these options online for those of us who would like to start small and inexpensively: http://www.instructables.com/id/VERTICAL-VEGETABLES-quotGrow-upquot-in-a-smal/ http://www.modernbushman.com/2011/08/06/vertical-hanging-vegetable-garden/#more-56
  24. Yep and strangely enough not that removed from the biking scene with the issues we face. Although the community is much MUCH bigger and that critical volume means more races and better riding options. In the cycling world btosports is chain reaction cycles or CRC for short. The main local online site is Chris Willemse Cycles (CWC) who are also a strong option. Pick an LBS (local bike shop) with a mech you can trust on the stuff you can't do yourself, because you don't yet know or have the tools and support them on your big purchases and stuff you want that they stock and give you deals on. Use apps like strava to find out where all the good spots for riding are by following chaps you know who live in the area and ride regularly! I'll tune Clint when I chat to him later this week. I'll add that you said he has a fat @ss and needs to spend more time on his peddle bike... Cheese Jay
