  1. Shame, dead hijackers, I thought I could smell something rancid in the air...
  2. Does anyone have a service manual for this or should I just do what the LBS's do and 'wing it'??!!
  3. Don't can it, revise your pricing and components?
  4. I got a 2009 AV 1, cost R6500. XT rear, Deore front, FSA crank, Shimano 475/525 hubs, WTB rims, Nevegal tyres, Shimano cassette, SRAM chain, Suntour shock, Tektro brakes, Deore shifters, Shimano pedals, WTB saddle. I think I saw the 2010 model going for around R7500. Mojoman2010-05-21 03:42:27
  5. It appears that most bike shops have people with no experience running the show, case in point would be my brakes at a LBS in Rustenburg, they damage my calipers, then try to blame me. Personally, I will never again let a LBS touch my machine, much the same as no-one but me services my computers, motorbike, 4x4, car and power tools, if I want it broken, I can do that myself!
  6. Measure them when you have them new and check for wear over time. I should imagine it is quite relative to what brake pads you are running?
  7. Haha!!Am off to buy the kit myself and let my own fingers do the work!
  8. Is mineral oil just mineral oil? Are there different types or anything before I go hunting for some for my brakes this morning?
  9. Tektro, Auriga Comps, they actually work OK (or did!!) but I thought an upgrade on the front rotor would be a good idea as I ride a lot of hills in the area and hoped for an increase in stopping power.
  10. Thanks for the replies. The original rotor is 1.88mm, the new one is 1.92mm. But I would have thought the calipers would have just pushed the piston out a bit more to make up for any width difference? I did have the bike upside down (not the first time mind you, I always turn upside down when fixing a flattie), I also had the bike on its side to remove the fork. To me if a closed system is kept closed and there are no leaks, how can air be introduced into the system?
  11. Pads do touch evenly (shone light into caliper and rotated the wheel), the pads have done 100km on the old rotor. I did have the fork out and did some other jobs while I was busy yesterday so I wondered if the air was not already in there but I managed to 'disturb' it by having the bike in many different positions (no work stand yet!). The lever comes all the way back to the handgrip.
  12. The pads have already done around 100km, do I need to buy another set of pads?
  13. I changed my rotor from its standard 160 to a 180 rotor (don't even get me going on how useless a large bicycle shop in my area was with selling me the wrong sized adapter! Evidently, unbeknown to the salesman, one size does not fit all!) After fitting the new rotor and spacer, the brake feels spongy and I swear I can hear air when you press the lever. Am taking the bike in to have the brakes bled today (another shop, another story!) but I was wondering how can they get air in them if they were not opened and I do not see any mineral oil leaking out anywhere?

    why ride

Why ride? Its the catalyst for a long shot of adrenaline, sent straight to the soul. A pick me up!
  15. 8K's over flat terrain is nothing, 8 k's over hills and rocky roads would be something else. Does someone not ride the course with a bike computer or a GPS?

  17. Fitness is key, I am off to do Breedts Nek this morning and it will be the fourth time, the first time I just about died, the second time was not as bad but it was still way k#K! The third time was waaaay better and this time I am actually looking forward to it! However this is over a period of 3 months, cycling 3-5 times a week, average rides from 40km onwards. When I started I used to ride about 6km and would be finished (smoking and drinking too much back then!) 3 months later, rides of 80km onwards are something to look forward to! Personally I feel that the only way to get fit is to stay motivated and realise that it does take time but once you reach a point where you notice you are better, things become so much easier and training now becomes enjoyable and something to savor! You also need to think happy thoughts when going up that long uphill!
  18. I am with Mud Dee on this, plain black!
  19. That SAPS site is chronic!! What we need is a company like this over here: http://www.chipntrace.com/
  20. Typical of South Africa, but its OK everyone, just blow your vuvuzela three times and and the problems will go away...
  21. Looks like RSA! Is there an ATM in that shop!!
  22. I live nearby and go over once a week (in my 4x4 that is!) to visit a friend near Sparkling Waters, I cannot believe how stupid people can be on that road, saw a fancy ass BMW trying his luck on Monday and that was while we were having a massive downpour, even my Sani was slipping! The other week a guy in Peugot was going up as I was coming down, I stopped him and warned him but he got quite shirty with me (yes I have done this before attitude) so I parked my truck and watched him take off a good size chunk of his exhaust, what a tappet!
  23. Head towards Magaliesburg village (R24 to Rustenburg), the start of the dirt road is about 7 or so k's from the village.
  24. Magalies, from Maanhaarand (Breedts Nek)
