  1. Pretty much what piotter and Mamil said: It wasn't my intention to make it sound like I was knocking the needs/desires of people who want trails that are more downhill/enduro in nature. It's weird, I had this same conversation earlier with a friend after we rode the MTB Challenge. My friend is more in the camp of "why are they adding jumps to x trails?! I hope they don't do this everywhere". I convinced them to try the Black Rhino recently and they weren't happy with me afterwards ahahahahaha whoops . But yes, what I'm trying to say is, as a TMTBC member who rides the trails a lot (maybe too much ), I'm very happy with the network. It's amazing. The reason I'm saying this is because it's important to give credit to the club for creating something unique and really pretty amazing. I've ridden trails in other countries (Australia and Spain so far) and their offerings, while not bad, aren't anywhere close to what we have in the club. The club is staffed by real people and they should know their work is appreciated. One has to give a voice to people like me, who ride for fitness/pretty-nature-things/views and don't expect downhill/enduro trails. All the trails require maintenance and so, if the loudest voices in the room are "downhill/enduro trails" - the wrong impression may be conveyed that the club predominantly consists of downhill riders, which I'm sure isn't the case. This will naturally trickle down to the trails. So I'm not knocking your desire for gnarly trails, I'm just saying that (1) the club do an amazing job and (2) we're in this together and we have to share finite resources. The poll on this thread is a bit misleading (which I'm sure was accidental) and that was part of the reason I chipped in. It's also important to go to the AGMs/SGMs. The last one I went to was an interesting insight into what the committee go through and some of the things they have to deal with. Also pretty interesting looking at the club's financials... it's a balancing act I wouldn't want to do. The club should maybe do a survey of current members and ask them (1) what kind of trails they like to ride and (2) what kind of trails they'd like to see built and then use the results to inform future decisions.
  2. A MOOOONBOOT! Like learning to use clipless pedals, forgetting to unclip and then falling face-first on your brick driveway...
  3. Weird seeing a post on Bikehub by someone you've been following on Strava Hope you recover quickly man. Your incident reminds me to always be careful and not underestimate the risks posed by sections of the trails. Very easy to misjudge too. Also useful to know that there is some kind of effective response in place when stuff goes wrong? Although your friend had to go get help? I've become very risk averse on the trails because I've seen my friends fall a few times - I'm doing it for fun, exploring and fitness. I'm generally very happy with the network's trails. I don't expect or need fancy, black diamond stuff. I like hopping from one farm to the next, doing a circuit, staying off the roads. The current network gives me this and then some. Thanks Patrick and the club!
  4. okay, (1) I'm glad it's not just me and (2) if you're right then I'm okay
  5. Quick question, in Patrick's latest e-mail: Is he talking about the white line?
  6. Struggling to find this info: when can we collect our race packs? The CTCT's website is very clear about where but not when. Of course I could have missed it somehow.
  7. Two friends and I are in EL / 07:20. I bought blue zipties today. Excited!
  8. Took out the roadie today - did about 350m of climbing before a spoke broke (!?) haha. I'll be fine. Super excited!
  9. Thanks Mamil, a friend has given me a road bike to use (it's very pretty, he bought it and then stopped cycling soon after), but I'm quite scared of road bikes... Part of me wants to put some slick-ish tyres onto my spare MTB wheels and ride my MTB instead, but that seems a bit phail. The MTB will let me get out of trouble more easily I want to hang around my friends but I'm stronger than them, so riding an MTB could be a good balancer. Decisions decisions.
  10. I'm riding the CTCT for the first time this year, riding with friends. Super exciting! I only really have MTB experience, so I'm a bit worried about being on the road on a road bike with so many people. The road bike always feels like it's trying to bite me compared to my MTB. It looks like my seeding was based on a single event in Yzerfontein last year. Somehow that got me into the 4J / 08:16 group start time.
  11. I'm a bit late to the party, but for a time (a year) I used PowerTap pedals on an MTB... offroad. They survived really well, but the setup was definitely sub-standard for offroad use. I particularly remember having to walk through some mud and also having to climb over fences (Tygerberg MTB trail above Oatlands) - but yes, they worked. The bike was an old carbon dual suspension 26'er. The combo worked well for lighter trails and gravel. I eventually got a SRAM XX1 Quarq, which is spider based. I was so impressed that I got a second unit. Best of luck to the OP - power meters rawk! It's great having the long term data and seeing a progression (thank you intervals.icu/David Tinker).
  12. I'm doing the repeat again this year. I wasn't going to do it but my friends unexpectedly paid for my entry eish. Unlike last year I'm actually putting some effort into training this time round - but I suspect no amount of training will stop the ass bruising haha. Lessons learnt from last year: aggressively prevent team mate from eating simple carbs (!), make shocks nice and soft, fine tune handle bar angle to reduce wrist unhappiness, carry a satellite messaging and tracking device (Garmin inReach mini). Super excited and mildly concerned . Riding cross country at night is AWESOME
  13. Apologies in advance if someone has asked this at some point, I did search the forums. I have a 2016 Specialized Camber and a 2016 Stumpjumper. The Camber has a "Brain" shock, the Stumpy has a non-brain shock. I prefer my Stumpy's rear shock, actually I prefer my Stumpy's whole shock setup to the Camber (it's fun). I'd like to be able to experiment with different shocks, but everything on the local second-hand market seems to have a different mount to what's on my Camber. I don't know what this mount is called, but it seems to be *the* standard rear shock mounting system. A website called bikeyoke sells an adapter which allows the use of standard shocks on a 2016 Camber, but these adapters, before shipping and customs duties, are about R 1700 (probably going to be about R 3000 all up as an estimate). Does anyone have any suggestions on an adapter available locally that is this price or less? Am I wasting my time wanting to try out different shock options? Maybe I'm expecting too much of my Camber.
  14. The replacement unit appears to have glue/loctite on the bolts that came loose on the previous unit - so recently-manufactured NX derailleurs shouldn't have this issue. Also I don't think anyone has complained about 11-speed NX (which was apparently constructed very differently to the 12-speed NX).
  15. Yes @ new NX 12 speed (bought in the last +/- 4 months). I just wanted to say a big thanks to CWC/CycleLab for replacing the 'sploded derailleur - without fuss. I emailed them, they asked for some photos, they asked me to bring it in and then gave me a new one , retail unit, boxed and all. Really good customer service, super happy . Thanks!
  16. Great, thank you , I'll probably do the same.
  17. Did anyone here ever come up with a solution regarding servicing your dropper posts? I'm trying to decide between having mine serviced locally or importing the service kits and doing it myself. Regardless, I'll switch at least one of my bikes to a Lyne post - their stuff rocks and they're local
  18. My GX Eagle setup has been great... Just bought another GX Eagle derailleur to replace the sploded NX derailleur.
  19. My NX Eagle has failed, my GX Eagle is still fine. The NX had 790km on it, the GX has 3800 km on it.
  20. Same thing just happened to my derailleur... 4 months old. Bought it from CWC, warranty claim time haha :|
  21. Thanks for asking - I rode this trail yesterday (into the nature reserve behind Bloemendal) and it was really beautiful. Lots of animals and great views. There was a gate at the top of the nature reserve that had a TBMTBC-favourite rusted lock on it. Does anyone know if this was once a club trail and if so the history? The lock had the club's code dialled in
  22. I'm 46 bpm today (roughly this most days) but yesterday I was 54 BPM( ), that seemingly coincided with some light cold-like symptoms (confirmation bias?). I don't like sleeping with a watch on but the HR data is SO COOL, so I do it . My upper HR limit appears to be lower than it should be for my age, regardless of the measuring device (chest/optical wrist). Gotta get lower...
