  1. How flat is London?
  2. I've since had a look at what the wall looks like, where the machine was used. Holy moses. Let's just say, Ti or not - I ain't going near my bike with it! Thanks for the input Hubbers!
  3. Thanks guys... I have already paused to re-assess my short term needs for "shooting" water at something, as against the continued welfare of my bike!...
  4. Yello all, Quick one: Have a proper high pressure hose at home, only for the evening. Rented from Coastal Hire, used to remove paint around the house. Question: If I cover up the fork, should I have a quick go on my MTB? It's a Ti frame, with no decals. But it has years of mud on it. What about the BB area - XT "see-thru" BB and Hollowtech cranks? Wheel hubs? Any thoughts?
  5. Fixies, in general, are worthy of all sorts of respect. I loved my old "back-pedal" BMX... Remember those? Fixie MTB'ers should be admitted to a necessary mental asylum. Fixie MTB'ers are mad.
  6. So here's a thread to hopefully pass away a few hours at work... I'm going to convert my ride to a Singlespeed one day. Something just seems right about it. Something in the simplicity of it. And whenever I google SS bicycles - I invariably find countless uber-cool, arty websites with amazing pics up, seemingly taken by some cool-cats who lead the types of lives where, if they feel the need to hop on to their sleek "I have all day and you don't" steeds - well then, they just do.... B) But here's the thing... I caught myself thinking the other day about how SS riders surely only worry about lubing their chains - and seemingly nothing else... They just hop on and ride - with no worries really about speed, gear ratios, maybe even fork/shock compression issues etc. etc... You know - just roll with the breeze through the hair etc etc... Then I started thinking, given how long it usually takes me to get everything ready before going on any of my longer rides - how much more chilled it would be, if I was on a SS instead - and chose to just "BE", rather than freaking out like a Boy-Scout ("be prepared") everytime I go riding... But then I had a moment of doubt - would things really change? So with tongue-shoved-firmly-in-cheek - I put it to the SS hubbers out there: How do you Roll? Me? In no particular order [for that 'long' ride] --- Grab Garmin Edge - pop it outside, to start finding satelites; Pump tyres / check pressure [i run tubeless converted]; Grab Camelbak bladder - fill it up; Insert bladder; Find phone - pop into Camelbak; Grab shoes - off to room; Put on HR Strap; Put on Chamois Cream; Get dressed; Back to garage - grab banana going through kitchen; Banana in back-pocket; Gloves on; Sweat bandana on; Sunglasses on; Helmet on; Pepperspray cannister and house keys in back pocket; Grab bike - out front door; Grab Garmin Edge - pop on bike/mount; Out gate - keys in Camelbak; Strap up/put on Camelbak; Attach Pepperspray canister; Push start; Ride... Somewhere in between all of this - I've done rudimentary stretching - kissed goodbye to the little one etc etc; All of the above - +/- 20 minutes, sometimes (ok, often) longer... NOW - in my dream world of Singlespeeding... Pump tyres; Grap keys / maybe phone; Get dressed - shirt and mtb baggies/stovepipe jeans/hip & happening Put on my helmet; Ride... But this is where reality kicks in... Surely, SS or not - you run the risk of still getting a puncture [tubeless or not] etc? What about a chain snapping? What I mean is - barring the 'tools' you'd need to 'repair' a gearing malfunction - most of what I have in my camelbak presently - would still foreseeably be used were I to be riding a SS... However, I've yet to see a SS with a saddlebag on it? At least not in the websites I'm looking at... And since a Camelbak presumably clashes with the simplistic approach to life's riding - I assume that's a big no-no as well? Which must mean - that if one looks as cool as one potentially could on a sweet SS machine - then one is instantly too cool to ever have mechanical issues? B) That's it - isn't it? Look uber-cool - and say bye-bye to the over-burdened rigours of one's past, multi-geared and complicated life? Would love to hear your thoughts - and please don't take any of the above too seriously, and ruin what could be a fun thread... In fact, take all of the above SS-style - and simply roll with it!
  7. Iloydkayak - good luck with your search! Be patient, and you will find - you'll soon realise that half the fun comes in picking up that 2nd gem, or perfect new ride! I cannot argue with anything that Covie has said above - in particular the part about the V-brakes, since I've never spent enough time on a disc bike - so cannot comment on the difference between the two - whereas he clearly can! Moral of the story being - there's always two sides - do your research, and make educated decisions [in short, abuse theHub/Hubbers for information ]
  8. Wapad makes good points... A decent fork on the front, especially if it's to replace an entry-level jobbie, will make an unbelievable difference to your ride - so is worth serious consideration. I guess it comes down to what you can get for =/-R5k... Have a shop around - and then weigh up the pros and cons of spending cash for a 2nd hand fork - vs a new bike... My 2 cents - for 5k, you might get a new bike - but it's frame etc. will be of such a level, that you won't really be able to justify upgrading any of the componentry on it - beyond what it comes with... Which means that if you do get very serious - you might start looking at getting a better bike again, but then you'd probably be looking at spending considerably more that R5k... Conversely, if you can shop around - you should be able to pick up a decent 2nd shock, possibly for half that price... Put that on your ride - and you'll be able to ride many more happy miles - until the bug bites seriously, and you upgrade to a better bike, and spend considerably more than R5k One thing though - if the v-brakes are doing what they're supposed to (i.e. stopping you), then I'd wouldn't worry about upgrading them... Disc brakes are expensive - and you'd want a decent hydraulic, not mechanical discs at that... Considering what you're looking for now - stick with what you have - barring the fork... Worry about hydraulic discs.... when the bug bites and you upgrade and spend considerably more than R5k ... Good luck!
  9. Wow! Sweet looking ride that - happy miles!
  10. What full-susser 29er do you have?
  11. That blows.. FFS!!!!
  12. Classic! Of course - it remains completely optional for one to continue wearing those favourite suede shoes for any of the other type of bike services/cleans! Btw, I highly recommend Mr. Bornman's workshop as well!
  13. One million Dollars....
  14. This post is *useless* without an approximate price!
  15. Components / wear 'n tear...?? One man's 2008 Toyota might have been driven by the old Tannie to church and back, once a week - whereas the other man's was a regular at Pink Slip races in the Kustomized&Dropped category... B)
  16. Oooh boy! Seriously hope this doesn't happen with me!
  17. Ditto!
  18. With that being said - I've taken the plunge already with Royal Mail, so any thoughts of insurance are bygones now +/-R500 on it's way - should get here some time next week - fingers crossed.
  19. How do you insure the items? Is this an option when you make the payment via CRC?
  20. Dude... Good luck!
  21. I agree - we appear to missing the point here: someone needs to commooserate with that poor cow... On the udder hand, Darren - maybe the milk is just not that in to you...

Aah - thanks Ed! Will check out ROAG as well.

    Race license

Edman - you appear to have done Mampara / Minki proud. Thanks for the explanation. Though, to be honest, it still had this lazy git who occasionally likes to ride on different singletrack a bit confused. I guess what I need to know - is can I pay extra on race-day, and then not worry about joining any clubs?

    Race license

This could be one of the best - and most certainly, random, starts to any thread ever posted on The Hub! I knew there was something eldritch about Minki! With this being said - back to things more pertinent: I have'nt entered an mtb race for ages. Joined the PPA for a year, about 3 years ago - did one ride under my license. They were kind enough to have me start in ZZ category. Wouldn't begin to know how to renew - or whether it's even worth it? Question: If I want to enter any MTB race now - do I simply apply online or whatever, pay, show-up and ride? I seem to remember that last time I bothered to be informed about these things, you needed to be registered with a club (i.e. PPA) before being allowed to race in anything.... Does this still apply? Fanks!
  25. Thanks Shebeen - will look at giving Tourism a buzz - but guess easiest would be to phone the guesthouse farm owners: "Jy wil wat doen? Met 'n fiets??? Neeeeee man!"
