  1. Do yourself a favour and get the Topeak one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=2928 Really great stand, folds up small and has a carry case, all the adjustments are butter smooth and versatile, it just oozes quality. Just note it doesnt come with the weight scale or the other tool trays but you can buy them seperately. I dont think I paid any more than the usual 14% (15?) tax on it ... I think that only applies to clothing and helmets!?
  2. Perhaps we should start an initiative to reward community members who hand this information to the cops. Reward them with money, cell phones, airtime, shoes, clothes, whatever they are looking for. Its a win-win, they rat out the bad guys and get rewarded for their positive actions. Maybe all cycling/climbing clubs could pay a percentage towards the fund. Just a thought.
  3. Want my advice? Don't service them till they start feeling like they need a service. With my last bike the LBS suggested a shock service, so I sheepishly agreed and ever since that day I had to send them in every 3 months because some new problem arose. To be honest you're better off learning to do it yourself ! *rant off*
  4. Hey guys Heading out to Sun City or Sundown ranch for the weekend, anyone have any GPS routes or sites to visit to get an idea of trails around the area !? I've searched Garmin Connect and these forums without much luck! Thanks for any help
  5. All I want are some extra Garmin cadence magnets, mine popped off the crank!
  6. I like Baggies in summer, just looks more MTB'ey Some baggies come with liner, some not. If you decide to get MTB baggies with no padding, then just buy yourself some R120 liner shorts from CRC to wear under them instead of the R600 that are "supposed" to be worn as is. Baggies are great for storage too, and some even come with extra side padding if you planning on wiping out I prefer bibs for winter ... leggies would just look plain daft on baggies
  7. Cool no prob Well as far as I know there are only 2 decent, well known map systems, and that's Garmins and Tracks 4 Africa (T4A). I'm opting for the Garmin ones so far (www.garmap.co.za) because I think they will integrate better with Garmin Basecamp. I don't believe the Edge 800 supports the DEM maps (3D Topography) so I will be getting the normal Topo and Rec maps which is what you should be getting for any trail type GPS for about R1300. Ontop of that you can get the Garmin Basecamp Bird's Eye maps which I have tried and used, they are AWESOME! (R200 per year subscription) It's like google earth on your Garmin, you specify a few regions to download and it overlays your Topo & Rec / T4A maps over this ... I managed to find some new routes this weekend out towards Bronkorst Dam because I could SEE EVERYTHING! Don't worry too much about the Cadence/speed sensor, rather get the cadence working because the Garmin is going to pick up your speed from the satellites anyway, it's supposed to be a little more accurate with the speed sensor so pffffft! Just remember if you use it in your car I dont believe it talks to you, it just beeps when a turn is coming up, but that won't stop you from getting there Good luck !
  8. Check out this thread https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/84391-edge-800/page__p__1162043__hl__edge+800__fromsearch__1#entry1162043
  9. Jah , got the Shova on this side, it's IMPOSSIBLE It's not a case of the little adjustable arm, but the fact that the crank doesnt come anywhere near enough past the rear swing arm in such a position that it can ready both cadence and speed, I think the Shova just has a rear wheel that sits further back from the crank, which is probably a "downhill" bike geometry characteristic Thanks for the suggestions tho !
  10. Sorry , meant to add that it's not strictly and offroad GPS, and is aimed at roadies as well, I haven't used it for that at all so can't elaborate much
  11. Yes ! Got it last weekend, been playing around a bit and was quite impressed after fiddling around ! I'll admit, I've never used an offroad GPS before so I can't really benchmark it against something else. Some good and bad points ... The good:- 1) It's the right size for me I mounted it over my stem on my MTB with the double o-ring connectors, and it's easy enough to read or view the map without squinting (For me anyway) 2) Mounting is cool It sits well and doesn't budge with the O-ring connector (I heard other people moan about the 705's cable tie system) It also plugs and unplugs from that adapter easily. 3) Menu's and setup are cool, and it's fast! Browsing through the settings is easy and it does some auto-calibration on wheel size etc, you can also setup pages for data fields and have upto 10 fields per page (1 of mine has Total time, Ride time, Heart rate, Heart rate average, Odometer, Temp etc) 4) Maps are cool and it supports Garmin Basecamp's Bird Eye Downloaded a sample of Bird's Eye imagery, WOW, it's like having google earth wherever you ride, I believe you can overlay this with the TOPO and REC maps too! 5) Mapping is FAST! I have no experiece with other offroad GPS's but it's WAY faster that my Garmin Nuvi (7 series?) for my car. The moment you tap zoom or pan it does it, even with the Bird's Eye maps, no lag, just plain sailing ! The Bad :- 1) The bloody cadence/speed sensor (I think they call it the G-10 unit) does not reach both at the same time. I believe it's because the geometry on my Morewood is such that it just won't work, I compared it to my old man's bike (KHS) and it seems it will work on his, so if you have a downhill/xc hybrid (In my opinion) instead of a pureblood XC bike you might want to double check. BUT it's not a train smash because the speed is still read by the GPS, it's apparently more accurate to just have the speed sensor on. 2) There is no manual for advanced settings Not a biggie, you can go online to find out how to setup advanced workouts and training schedules, but I'm not really into that for MTB 3) Internal memory I think there's only 100 odd megs of internal, not too serious because it accepts MicroSD (Not sure up to what size), people have complained in general that memory sticks are slow, But just remember that the speed is classed on these things. There is Class 2/4/6 and I've heard of class 10 as well (Higher is faster), most people probably go out thinking a memory stick is a stick, big difference though in access and copying speeds ! You can pick up a class 6, 8Gig for about R150 which is more than enough I think! That's about it ! Overall I'm very happy ! Got more excited to use the thing the more I played with it I just wish Garmin would have sent the local guys a test unit before I even got my hands on it, I'm probably one of the first in the country :P Still trying to find out if it supports the DEM maps for 3D topography...
  12. K, i've searched google with the obvious question , and even phoned the local Garmin themselves and no one can answer my question ! Does the Edge 800 support the DEM maps?? (Not just the topo and Rec) In fact , is anyone running DEM maps on the 705 or anything similar ?? Thanks for any info !
  13. What happened to the Shova ?? Or has it been integrated as some wierd hybrid ? I hope they are spraying their frames with design now and not using sticker decals
  14. Don't races just fall under classes? They just round it off to fall under a 10/25/40/50 etc? Kind of like computer hard drives that get classed as a 500gig but in actual fact have 465 gigs available. And besides, if you ride a wobbly route instead of a straight line you end up doing more anyway
  15. I remember seeing a lot of red on the frame, the only white was the text "S-Works" as far as I could tell !
  16. Maybe she was buying him some tubes ??
  17. Jah All I can remember is Blue and white striped shirt (Horizontal), and a cap
  18. Shot We should probably make a sticky post for this kinda thing! The only thing I could possibly have done at the time I didn't think of was take a photo with my cellphone, so if anyone else encounters a similar situation, start snapping!
  19. Okay .. saw someone who could pass for a gardener walking in Crowthorne (Near Midrand) with a red S-Works and a white(Fox?) front fork. I'm suspicious because:- 1) Im pretty sure something like that is WAY out of his pricerange. 2) He was walking (clips?) 3) It was almost dark 4) He was looking around himself nervously How about do we go checking if it's stolen ? If I phone the police they don't want to know anything unless a serious crime is taking place ?
  20. On a positive note, I saw a clearup team of about 10 cops evicting/searching the squatters near the DHL building just past the river crossing on the Spruit on Saturday 13th
  21. Depends on what type of crank you have, but usually you need a bottom bracket spanner for the Shimano XT type cranks, it looks like a spanner with teeth on the inside. You can either buy one of these for about R150 or get the parktool tool kit from CRC for about R400 which has almost everything you will need to service a bike. Then go onto YouTube and look for videos on how to do it, it's pretty simple, you may also want to buy the Shimano all round grease to re-grease. But before you do anything drastic I would do as 1 Hill says and just clean the pedals first, as well as get yourself a good brush and some parafin and give both the casette and crank cogs a good clean, I also had some clicking/grinding noises on my bike, redid the entire bottom bracket and rear suspension pivot to find out these weren't the cause of the noise ! Good luck!
  22. This might be a far reach of a guess but the strength of signal could be contending with 2/3 satellites outside your windows and thus bouncing from one side of the building to the other as there is no clear signal above it.
  23. LOL! Yeah true hub-style debate
  24. Hmmm I would take a walk outside, maybe your buildings' roof is thicker than at home
  25. Are you inside !?
