  1. I just need to make one thing clear - I have no problem with them taking up both sides of the jeep track. I don't even have a problem if for some reason a rider comes from the opposite direction and does not see me. But this was just pure arrogance. The front guy in the bunch saw me coming and I actually heard him shout, and gesture to the group to keep to their left, but like I said they just gave him the provebial finger and came at me with a 'we are bigger than you' attitude. I slowed down to give them time to move over. Is it a Cycle Lab attitude? I won't know but an interesting question was asked on why these incidents alway seem to involve them. If memory serves me right the whole Cradle issue was started by CL bunches taking over the road there. But they can be sure that next time somebody will be tasting pepper, and it won't be me Sad that I am now contemplating using a self defence weapon meant for criminals against my 'bretheren' but if that is what it takes so be it.
  2. Not sure why I'm posting this but at the of chance that one of you idiots can actually read..... The Cycle Lab bunch that rode the jeep track going past the estate opposite the Irene Mall, are you all really that arrogant? (I pressume you belong to the CL club since 99% had the kit on). I'm riding in the left track of the jeep track and you come from the front and refuse to give way. Were you really expecting me to ride into the veld so that you can come past? As you approach one by one you eventually decided to move to you left track. One over weight piece of crap actually refused resulting in us both coming to a complete stop in the middle of my side. If this is your attitude off road I can only imagine what you must be like on the tar. It's people like you who makes motorist kill cyclist or drive cradle dwellers to tacks, both which I wish upon you because cycling can do with less of your type. BTW apologies to the guy riding shot gun. You were the only one who a) greeted, B) move over and c) indicated to those behind you to do the same. They all basically told you to f-off by their actions. You are also the only one not wearing CL kit.
  3. to be an annoyance to you
  4. It helps to remove pressure by giving you the option to change hand position. Probably not applicable to all riders but if you are prone to hand numbness it will help. Also helps with power transfer.
  5. stretch can take a pic of the mount if you have time? I curious to see if they changed it. Mine is floppy as hell.
  6. OK an update on my struggle. Ciska, the Secretary General of CSA send me the response below. Seems as if there are competent people in CSA after all. BTW she send this to the GNC secretary as well so all ROAG members will be approved. "The Domicile of a rider is determined by the area a member resides, in this case xxxx is a member of Northern Gauteng Cycling. As a member he has a choice to join any club in South Africa, as long as his affiliation fees for his province had been paid up to date, either directly or via CyclingSA. Looking at the information below as well as the payment confirmation dating back to 19 November 2011 – any rider who belongs to ROAG, who lives in Gauteng North, who has paid their R25 affiliation fee to the province (Gauteng North) has to be approved as a member of CyclingSA. xxxx – on behalf of Cycling South Africa, I apologise for any inconvenience caused. I have been instructed by our Recreation Director to ensure that your application is approved immediately."
  7. Personally I would go for the Garmin even if more expensive. I've been using the Bryton 35 for quite a few months now. Initially I was happy. It worked well and I like the display layout etc. But some things bugged me. The mount is as secure as mcdonald shake on your cars roof.. It is difficult if not impossible to operate any button without stopping to ensure that you do not dislodge the unit. Then there is also no off line application. You must be connected to donwload and analyze anything. But then the real trouble started. It started behaving eratic. It would freeze up on occasion until one day I could do nothing, no soft or hard reset worked. GPSPlay looked at it and I was told that it was cause by water damage. Surprising to me since I have only used it during the winter months, no rain in gangster paradise. They then replaced it with a 2nd hand unit, but it worked. I was told to avoid water , this includes rain. I'm on a MTB for crying out loud! Well the replacement unit has never seen a drop of water but it started the erratic behaviour within a week. I've now given up. I noticed that GPSPlay have given the Bryton distributionship up. Good call if you ask me.
  8. I know there is a thread about this every 2nd week but since this is rant `n rave I thought maybe I'll feel better if I rant about this. Since this whole money extortion racket was started by CSA it's been a joke. They never did anything for the recreational cyclist (and listening to pros like Robby Hunter not much for the licensed riders either). Initially they actually posted you a membership card and that was about the extent of the value they added. But I'm OK with that because I keep on telling myself it's not much money. Last year though they decided to outsource the printing to, yip us the paying suckers. Still I said to myself that it's OK because it's not a lot of money. This year they have been mandated to collect the provincial fees as well. Again I'm OK because it's not much. So I apply, last year, for my new license. I make use of the virtual club, ROAG as I do every year. They approve my application in a jiffy. And then it stops. I enquire and am told that the CGN secretary will look at it for me. Nothing. Again I ask. By this time I'm fuming because remember I'm paying for NOTHING really. I also request that both CSA and CGN tell me what they do for me the recreational cyclist. No response but I am told that my application is not approved because the club I belong to is not affiliated to CGN. So it seems as if CGN is actually milking clubs for money as well? Well this time I told myself that yes it's not a lot of money but this is not about the money anymore. It's a matter of principle. Out of principle I will not change my club to one in GN and out of principle I will not give any money to an organisation who does not and cannot do anything. CSA TAKE YOUR LICENSE AND SHOVE IT! OK now I feel the same.
  9. I actually do and to respond to skott - and so do many who speed. Not the point really. It is comments like yours that causes the type of crap this thread turned out in the end. Remember the most important rule of the road - He who is faster than you is an assh0le, he who is slower than you is an assh0le. So basically you are the only righteous one.
  10. BULL F*CKING SH*T!!!
  11. If you are not doing intervals then you are wasting your time.
  12. In practise yes, in theory no. The venues belong to different entities. Groenkloof/Fountains belongs to PRETORIA while Voortrekker is a private institute. Hence moving from one to the other would have to involve paying which means additional logistics. Would be nice. Oh and the guy who reckons there is a tunnel linking Groenkloof and Klapperkop is smoking something
  13. Sounds like rebound on your shock. If your shock rebounds too quickly it will try to catapult you over the handles when it hits a bump. Try adjusting the rebound so that when you compress the shock it returns slower. To slow will result in a harsh ride like a hardtail as the shock will not have time to rebound before taking the next hit.
  14. Don't expect TOO much. There is a lot of hype and yes considering the numbers it is well organized but it is a mountain bike race with a sweet on the pillow. The mattress isn't thicker, the tent isn't bigger and the toilets aren't cleaner. The hype around S2C is like the Argus. It is not the most difficult, longest, prettiest ect. It is just a 'must do'. The Argus because it is the worlds largest timed cycling event and the S2C because it is considered by most as the father of MTB stage racing. Oh and the jacket is cool But as some have said, there are others out there. Some even beter value for money. BTW I have no problem with regulars getting first dibs. I expect the same from my favourite stage race and would be pissed if I did not get in after supporting them year after year.
  15. Ok NOw I see you are actually serious. Thought you were joking there for a sec. Well to be honest probably 80% of the participants are family people and as Mark said it is one of the few stage races where your family is allowed in the race village. They don't have to buy meal vouchers, they can prepare their own food if they camp on site. So I guess yo would want some money back if you don't compete a stage or if it rains and you don't want to get it dirty? Really get a life man, this is the best value for money stage race you will find in SA now even if you don't eat your meals that you paid for.
  16. Correct you are. No need to rush out and look since a) my bikes sleep inside and B) I build them all myself. I was just using the information quoted by you "hence causing a failure in some quick releases" since the quick release is part of the skewer it is failure of the skewer like the failure of a link is the failure of a chain and so forth. Seems from the reaction to this question you are the only unlucky one here so it is actually 'lucky world, unlucky ass'. Must just be happening in the armpit of Africa I guess.
  17. Never knew or heard of anybody that had a skewer snap because of a 180 rotor. If a skewer can support a fat ass MTB rider on a drop off then I'm sure it will support a bit more brake force associated with a larger rotor. BTW stopping a rotor is stopping a rotor whether you do it with a 160 or a 180. The different is that you need less effort to do it with a 180 but if your brake function the way they should then you will be able to lockup the wheel with a 160 and once it is locked, it's locked. A 180 does not lock it better, just easier. I've been riding 180 up front for year and I have all my teeth.
  18. See map. If you are in Groenkloof you just follow the road though the access gate towards the Main entrance. Just after the sharp left turn you will see the entance on your right. There is a single track to the left of the tar road that you can use when riding your bike. But you have to go through the access gate on the tar road.
  19. Muddy

    New to biking

First good luck with your reaching your goals. Yes I would suggest you take the bike for a setup (Cycle Lab is good) but also remember that having not ridden a bike for so many year you are bound to have some pain You obviously already got the bike and it seems as if you went for the road option. I would have suggested a MTB as it is more relaxed and potentially safer even when riding on the road as you can use all the space. And and the first few rides are the worst but push on and you won't be sorry.
  20. Isn't a tool something usefull
  21. Sad story actually. The first one I ordered never pitched up. It just disappeared into the blue yonder. Jeroen actually refunded my money and I then got a replacement bush from aus. I knew it was not going to hold so I decided to order again but this time I send to our office in ATL, US so that I can pick it up when I was there. They ship in the US for free. So bottom line is you should have it within 2 weeks max but I never got to test that. 6 Months down the line and mine is still missing. I suspect it sitting on some customs poepols desk since it's a cool piece of kit.
  22. From the Sani2C news letter We still await payment from a small percentage of those on the list. Entries will open to those on the waiting list should full payment not be received by 17h00 today.
  23. Because all the spots are filled does not mean people on the waiting list won't get in. If people cancel (and they do) then you can still get in.
  24. Happy birthday. Now I know why I ordered stuff 30 minutes ago and STILL do not have a tracking number!!!
  25. Yip that's the one. When I initially saw it my thoughts were 'there is no way in hell that thing is fitting onto my current hub without some serious machining. But it does and it is as easy as fitting the nylon bush. After my second bush I got the bearing and have not touched it since (>2000k's). You also get a replacement seal, different to the original and about half the thickness. This is enough extra space for the lip you see at the bottom of the body.
