  9. On my way home on Monday, I encountered Philani Dladla, the Pavement Bookworm, outside the Rosebank Gautrain station. He was drumming up interest in the Kingsmead Book Fair by selling some books. I bought these... Only realised later that I had already read the one on top, but I am looking forward to the one underneath it: The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam. If you're wondering about what the Pavement Bookworm is about, read here: http://www.pavementbookworm.co.za/

  12. If you're not doing anything tomorrow... An invitation…………. to visit the Smuts House Museum in Irene free of charge this Wednesday! The Museum is housed in “The Big House” which is itself of great historical interest. It is an old prefabricated wood and iron Officers’ Mess which was initially transshipped from India to Middelburg in South Africa. It was purchased by Jan Smuts in 1909 and was then transported by steam train to Doringkloof Farm in Irene where it was reconstructed as a ‘temporary’ home for Smuts. However, the Smuts Family ended up making this structure their homestead for over 40 years. The house is home to a wonderful collection of military memorabilia, original photos, citations, furniture, archival material and artifacts from Smuts’s day. His extensive library can be seen. A visit to the museum is a trip back into the past. Smuts was prominent in three major wars: he was a Boer general in the Anglo-Boer War. In World War l, he was in command of the Commonwealth Forces in East Africa, South West Africa and the East African campaign. In World War ll he was second-in-command of the British War Office (after Sir Winston Churchill) Behind the Museum is the Oubaas trail, a circular walking route of 2.4km. This koppie is where Smuts used to walk to collect his thoughts. Stromatolitic rocks dating back 2 700 millions years can be seen on the walk, along with an arboretum, graves of bywoners and a simple granite monolith which bears the plaques of remembrance of members of the Smuts Family. A tea garden, adjacent to the Museum is renowned for its cream scones!

  18. Just got my hands on Season 3. Man, it's a crazy little town! Rainy weekend had me most of the way through season 1 of Ray Donovan. Doesn't so much have twists as it does just one screw-up after the next...enjoyed what I've watched so far,

  21. I'd be more worried about how robust those tyres are...cute little things like that could never cause such damage... Post in Tech Q&A to see if anyone can suggest a cat-resistant tyre...

  23. Mentioned this guy over on the awesome thread... It's a worthwhile read. Not a knock-your-socks-off kinda read, but that actually works for a character like Bertish. Like the casual way he goes about his big four dream - Waimea, Todo Santos, Mavericks and Peahi - although he's anything but casual in the water. That is hallowed. He throws in his motivational lessons kinda as an afterthought, like, "oh, ja..." He's more just-peachy than preachy. I liked the book. This one was tough-going, probably a bit rigid in translation, but worth a read if you've any interest in the famous boy reporter or the socio-politico circumstances surrounding his creation (I don't think that - apart from beer, cheese, cycling and choccies - I will ever get the Belgians). Assouline's book is a great addition to any Tintin fan's collection of books about Herge... ...although it's no longer in mine as I gave it to my mate's hubby in Durbs just after I finished it, and he gave me this in turn. Unlike Assouline's sure-footed effort, Thompson's pace of writing is more akin to how Tintin trips through the books. He introduces the quirks of Herge's life like twists to the tale rather than points to push a thesis as Assouline does. Thompson's chapters end with cliffhangers. AN Wilson's quoted critique printed on the cover is spot-on...best read I've had for a while.
  24. And tow ropes be damned! Just read Stoked by Cape Town big wave man Chris Bertish, who did just that: paddled in at Jaws!
  25. Read this the other day. Even the bigger spots are crazy... I was reminded of Everest, which has been this way for more than a decade, when the raw footage of the most recent swell to light upTeahupoo filtered out through the internet. On some of the waves, the normally glassy, blue-green face was shredded to a frothy mess as swarms of tow-in teams descended upon it and tried to outmaneuver each other for the takeoff spot. It was uglier than a frozen corpse. http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/laird-hamilton-teahupoo-exploiting-surfings-everest/
