  1. I agree. it's relatively safe, cheaper than road or mtb, and the most spectator friendly. The role players in Gauteng have done just about zip to promote the sport. They say the track's here, come and ride. They don't promote or advertise it in the popular media. HNP have Lotto bikes for newbies to try out on and there is training most nights of the week. For those interested contact Gail Heuvel at CGC office or Grenville Scullard or just go along. I plan to.
  2. During the talk he asked someone to fetch him a random Easton wheel. The guy brought him a Circuit off one of the Cervelos standing on the floor. He plucked and the tone was very uniform. He then asked for a wheel of another brand. He was brought a Hed........ Needless to say it was out of tune, so to speek, ja speek.
  3. I attended a talk given by Brad Hunter of Velomax/Easton at Cyclelab a year ago. He spoke, yes spoke, about using sound by plucking the spoke with a hard plastic object to gauge equality and I assume amount of tension. He didn't pooh pooh the tensiometer but said he preferred just listening to the sound. Marketing hype or science? They are lovely hoops, though.

  5. Sounds like you've gone lower/further forward than your last bike and what your suppleness/conditioning can handle. Too much weight on the front. Getting into a more aggressive racing position needs to be done gradually. get help from an expert
  6. My 04 Kestrel Evoke is currently with Cliff at Cycleart for a facelift to 07. Bike got hurt in 06 H2H and repaired. It has survived another high speed downer, forks not. Has been stripped naked and will reappear as a metallic candy apple red with the word Kestrel in Naked Carbon. Pictures I get it back. Cliff commented on what a strong frame it is (1090gm). Go to http://www.kestrel-usa.com/bikes/evoke.php for a look. They are obtainable here. The RT700 is a work of art. These guys were the first to make CF frames. Something different, stiff, light, with a pedigree, rides nice, responsive, with a good lifespan. Obtainable in SA.

  8. Personally I hate breaking my rhythm and I can never seem to clip in easily again. I go ride where the robots aren't. I cross 4 robots on a 100k ride out and back and on average make about 6 stops depending on traffic. Can't do the 5 robots in 6 k thing, rather ride the WT
  9. Not out of charity though, surely. Anyway the CSA licencing should take care of that. I think we should scrap the largely irrelevant provincial bodies as I believe they are part of the old order problem. How about the clubs affiliating directly to CSA, no provinces, or associations, filtering down the voice of the silent majority.

  12. So Kiwi, you were at the back of the bunch hanging on for dear life, hoping the lights would change to red so you could get back to them. They changed and the cyclists kept going. The last 2 cyclists did a sorry for you, which is why you were pissed... worse still they were from the dreaded C club. Seriously though, I do agree that we need to observe rules. I do jump the odd red early on a Sunday if its safe to do. Do runners wait for the little green man. Do you never speed or break any laws. How many cyclists get killed jumping lights vs getting taken out from behind? Personally I have done the Engen ride a couple of times but there are too many robots, instead I aim my bike away from the city to minimise the robots and avoid the dilemma.
  13. Damn straight wild dog, done 5 of those, moved on. In Joburg (yum) we have a big funride that doesn't rely on riders (that aren't really welcome) from the other side of the country to make it what it is numerically. Next weekend in fact, that attracts the biggest fields of licenced riders racing together. The fun bunches are not as big as the butchers picnic down south, which means less pile-ups. Thanks but no thanks. Anyway I thought this was an anti PPA thread not a personal issue. Was just adding my 2c. Seems like some of you kaypees are a tad sensitive about your province.
  14. As a Joburger and non ppa member, I refuse on principle to enter any ppa where ppa members are given a discount, or preferential seeding. I find that offensive.
  15. Possibilty of post crash repair costs could be a factor in which case having a set built the option. If your ego needs the bling thing, then go for the brands. But Ksyrium rim = R1200 + R60 per spoke. DT swiss = R650 rim + R7 per spoke and quicker repair turnaround time. And in 10 years from now you'll still be riding them. The bling wheel thing is a bit overrated. The protour boys still race classics on good old fashioned wheels.
  16. Nou gaan hijack julle weer die thread, al is dit meer interesant. Yak doesn't have the bucks for tubbies, period. Wheels are about compromise as JB and Brad Hunter (who put Velomax on the map says). At 1477gm the Orion 2's provide 24/28 spokes an awesome ride (clinchers) tempest quality hubs. They are also stiffer than the Ascent at 1428gm 18/24 spoke about R5500 2 other alternatives, Tempest 2 clinchers 1570gm 18/24 spoke, awesome wheel about R6500 Ksyrium SL also fairly light and very stiff and responsive, not as good as the above wheels in crosswinds. Don't require rimtape so there is a 40-50gm saving there. About R6500 Dura Ace 7800, a bit heavier at 1700gm, lovely aero wheel to ride, rolls beautifully, good enough to ride a break. expect to pay R4500-R6000
  17. As a cyclist and a motorist for that matter, I just try and let the bad stuff on the road go and focus on the good. That way I stay relaxed. I am ultra careful, usually cycle with my 15 year old daughter so cannot afford to get caught up in a them vs us thing. Just smile and wave, or just ignore them. Retaliatory behaviour affects the whole cycling community. I find waving at a motorist thanking him for allowing to pass always is greeted with a wave and smile and by clearly signalling my intentions, motorists are ok.
  18. This is very sad. Kiwi, taking on a motorist in SA could get you killed. Read Adele's editorial in this month's Ride mag. The root cause is the general lack of adherance to the rules of the road by many road users and alas I believe that many who drove responsibly before, have followed the example of the taxis using every bit of space, on or off the road to get through the traffic. Until we see real commitment to road traffic law enforcement, we need to be verrrry careful. Being in the right is one thing, being dead right, well.... I have succombed to doing my weekly training indoors and if I can get away do one ride out on a Wed morning. Otherwise I ride go out only on the weekends. But still no guarantees. Graham Cooper died on the weekend. Yesterday's tragedy should be a reminder to any cyclist who may be a bit complacent. Let's be careful out there.
  19. The standard argument of those involved is "why don't you get involved" when they don't have an answer to mostly constructive criticism. Not everybody is able to. If you know what goes on on the inside, how decisions are made, and if you have concerns for the future of cycling as I do, then the forum is an ideal place to air your views. I agree not all are constructive or intelligent. But those at CSA are free to read our views as well. Joker read some more threads concerning CSA and learn.

  23. Saw them on Wednesday morning where they always are -the place we call Baboon Hill. Quite an impressive troop of about 20, one or two big chaps. Last Saturday we saw about 6 Vultures on the pylons near the Beyers turnoff. I heard they were released into the area recently. Friends of ours killed a kudu and did R144000 damage to their Kombi on that road, (in the dip where you see the warthogs sometimes at night) admittedly going a bit fast. I've seen eagles, owls and other raptors plus the obvious buck and monkeys often there. I just love the rhinos on that green grass. They look almost domestic. Oh yes then there are the lions and ground hornbills, but do they count being in a breeding programme. Who says Joburg sux for riding........
  24. The sad thing is some that people, almost 50, need drugs to stay in touch with the cream of the 45-49 bunch. Pathetic actually, when one considers that at this age it's for fun. So you come 4th and need some help to do it. And then you look at yourself in the mirror. What's the fun of that. I'm sure there are many more Vets who haven't quite accepted their genetic inheritance (or lack thereof) yet.buckstopper2007-10-13 04:43:21
