  1. Maybe the organiser should amend the draft rule to exclude another gender from benefitting a rider.ie men draft men, women draft women. Men draft women is a dq, and vise versa
  2. I live in the 'burbs in Fourways. Tranquil, green and restorative is my garden. Head out onto Witkoppen and the madness gets into my head space. For our safety and sanity my wife and I have made the decision to move to Grahamstown, small enough yet big enough. I will walk to work and walk home for lunch. Road, gravel and trail excursions into the surrounding African bush in solitude or with unstressed likeminded people await. Sorry for you Gauteng, I'm out too... FWIW I also could have been bliksemed by the likes of the perp sought here, as roadhogging bunches, or tyre fixers who do their fixing in the marked cycling lanes, are a pet hate of mine, and I'll also remonstrate with self entitled types. I'll miss the Cradle for the odd early weekday peace, but not on Saturdays when I give it a wide berth. Peace out
  3. Just got back from Germany, ebikes and cargo bikes all over. Some interesting iterations
  4. They did do a 52 in 7800. Not sure about inner ring possibilities though.
  5. Had similar issues with a new H9 Polar so I took it back to them earlier this year at their Midrand office. This is what I learned - I've used their hrms for nearly 30 years 1. It needs to be tighter than you would think (the owner at Polar said "like 2 inches of play when pulled from your chest while fastened" (Mine had/has never needed to be this tight, but it helps to be tight particularly in winter). 2. Obviously wet. (I knew this) 3. Certain 2025 batteries are thinner than others and affect connectivity (eg Varta). I now use Energiser Panasonic or Duracell. And I'm not mixing the 2025s with 2032's which are thicker. 4. Below 2.9v it'll work more erratically but your head unit should also give you a low voltage msg. 5. You can also get erratic signal and in particular spiking going downhill fast (worse in winter if the strap is not tight enough).
  6. Fit absolutely, and also steerer length. Pina cut very low
  7. And soon 28mm tyres will become the new 23. I don't think the pinarello can take them whereas I believe the tcr can. I once looked at an F8 frame and didn't buy it for that reason.
  8. My point is that you'd need to be above average to run 37 min. 33 min way above average. I'm sure you guys are pretty strong cyclists. Not just any okes... I'm a novice 61 yo runner (off an 80 cycling ctl) and have trained for a half marathon in 2018 and 2019 and am training for another one this year. I found the formula t2=t1(d2/d1)×1.06 to work for me in projecting my time based on my 5 and 10k times for the half. I will report back fwiw. I still think 37 mins is very good! Based on a 33 min 10k this formula says a 1h13 half. I'm hoping for a sub 2hr (5k 25.20, 10k 53). Great thread.
  9. Doable, but for who? What VO2max is needed to do a 2h33 marathon? My Google research suggests about 64ml/kg/min. This would be regarded as elite for someone in their prime. (Ave male 20-29 years 40-46ml/kg min). Is it that cyclists with a running problem are just uber, and they don't realise how far above average they are? In the 2021 Boston marathon about 120 out of 15000 men went 2h33 or better (0.77%). A 2h33 marathon = an about 6h22 comrades. 45 men managed this last time. Coach Parry suggests that to run a silver (sub 7h30) you need to have "a great deal of running ability". What would be doable for a cyclist of same ability as a 37min 10k runner? A sub 1 hour 40km tt? A 2h45 Aurgust? A performance within 20% of a world class climber up the Hatacam?
  10. I guess as a cyclist with a running problem (on a cycling forum with a random running thread) when I see a 37 min 10k being "doable" I want to burn my shoes. (BTW the Stryd table extrapolated the 37ish 10k time to a 2h33 marathon - also "doable", one would imagine ;). Interestingly, my running and cycling ftps are at the moment quite similar, although I would say I'm a trained competitive age grouper cyclist, but a novice runner with a reasonably decent engine (for my age).
  11. What sort of rFTP would it take to run a 37 min 10k, and is a rFTP a similar number to a cycling FTP for a person who runs and cycles?
  12. I have been happily training and racing with mechanical groupsets for 30 years using Shimano 105, 600, Ultegra and Dura Ace downtube and SIS. The milliseconds of power transfer loss vs the sound and feel of the very reliable and cost effective cable shift, is, for this relic, a no brainer. I'm sorry, I'm out, I won't be investing.
  13. Look at Tiagra RD 4700 medium range rear derailleur. It'll take a 11-34 Shimano HG500 10 spd cassette. To tweak your front you could drop to a 34 in front. Will make a huge difference and improve low end by nearly 50%
  14. Cedar and R114 intersection is complete, no more gravel challenge section - boring but bike stays clean at least.
  15. 100% agree with Jewbacca. In a world full of gun toting "problem solvers" we also need to reflect on the tragedy of the loss of such a huge talent and the affected families left behind. I say let the cops do their work and wait for the outcome. Cluedo comments maybe a bit insensitive.
  16. Could it be the tibialis anterior? If you raise your toes you'll feel it bulge just below the knee. After my fractured pelvis I wasn't using my glutes properly and compensating with the tibialis anterior on the down stroke. Developed over use. Cyclists often need to do off the bike work to strengthen the glutes and make sure they 'fire'. Maybe also try move your cleats back as far as they can go. You won't lose power, promise.
  17. Yes. Fines. Normally Swiss franc
  18. You're doing plenty. I would move virtually all the z3 to z2, not do more intensity. And easy z2 at that, not upper z2. And have an eating plan for the event, that'll mean training your gut.
  19. Next year if I licence before I enter Swartberg again I think I'll change my name to a "nom de velo". The name Sorriforyou CS Africa could work né?
  20. The decent on a gravel bike was very tough. Cars on the pass made it even more dangerous. On the second switchback descent about 160k in a guy opened his car door to pick up some litter on a 8% descent. I was about 100m away. 2 seconds earlier and I was a goner. "Caution Cyclists" signs needed on both sides of the pass. Most of the motorists seemed oblivious...
  21. My Swartberg. I got about 500g net carbs in and then came the mountain. I l still had 160 in my tank bag when I got to the pass proper but never used it. I did drink on the hill. Back in PA my son (having finished and taken a shower) handed me a bottle of Revive when he met me at the finish. Being my first visit to the Pass I subconsciously (I think) managed my effort in order to get over the pass without getting off to push. Did 7h38. Very chuffed. Tired but not broken, and could've gone again today.
  22. Where did you fit in? I'm expecting to burn about 700-750 kcal/hr ave at Swartberg. Hopefully not much at over ftp. The challenge of tolerating about 100g/hr for 7hrs is going to be a first. We'll see...
  23. For Saturday's Swartberg (171km 3000m ascent) my aim is to average a normalised 80% (of ftp). I aim to eat 6 cadence energy bars and 6 SIS gels, (both 40g net carbs, 1:08 m/f), plus Carbofuel, 2 x 950ml bottles with 80g net carbs each. Also taking a 3rd bottle, water. That's 640g. Maybe some potato at 100km. Aiming to be at Die Top in about 6.5 - 7 hours if I box clever. Will let yous know how my nutrition plan works.
  24. Remember you do store about 500g of available carbs and you also are not burning 100% of carbs as fuel. The harder you go, the more carbs you'll burn. For lsd rides the 1g/kg thing is plenty. But don't not eat. Having said that I do a weekly fasted 90min to 2hr z2
  25. I use Carbofuel by Cadence. 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose. The uptake is super quick which is what you need.
