  1. Eric Palmer took some cool pics http://www.pinkbike.com/u/ericpalmer/album/The-Night-Harvest---2016/ Check it out
  2. Andreu was a bit subdued, maybe the jumps were too small! - he got insane height though. McDuff was his usual nutter self, and Nick the Canadian was insane with that flip bar to whip. Anyway it was a good evening - best show yet. Moe Peters rode incredibly well - all the hard work paid off. Now for Ultimate X
  3. Always enjoy camping at dwarsberg! is the single track that Meaurant built still rideable? Also my daughter is going to be at the Worcester campus next year - how would we go about finding where would be good to ride. BTW - sorry you couln't ride Gansbaai this weekend :-)
  4. Was involved in the days when the mushroom collectors, dog walkers and some cyclists opposed the felling. There were some key brains then, ex foresters and profs, guys I really respect. Some have passed away. There is not agreement on the how the fynbos rejuvenation should go. I live in a fynbos area - and love it - green all year round and provides awesome trails - but as you said you live in a city, a few more people. I found it frustrating when the custodians of the slopes' experts are not prepared to listen to other experts with a different view.
  5. Actually before 2011 did they already waste taxpayers money by flying down a delegation from Pretoria to 'appease' those who are paying their salaries. A PR exercise that they are very very good at. History can be sometimes longer than what you think. Look - you guys have been at it for a while - hopefully a lot of lessons have been learnt. Sometimes you also need to realise that you need a different strategy. So while you plod along spend some energy at looking at other alternatives. I hear there is a Protea Starcraft Grandmaster player in the Southern Suburbs - they are very good at strategising and adapting very quickly
  6. Seeing slapsock has been around forever, and therefore the trail longer than forever - we should treat it as public right of way. Use David W attitude (or rather example) re Die Leer and the controversy there - after all he is a lawyer Deon - this thing with Tokai has gone on foreeeevvvvveeeer. From the days of ......./? I can't even remember anymore - sent all the stuff to Headshot. Time for a new take or attitude. Get some really bigshots on your side and exert some serious pressure. There isn't only 1 process - that process is and has been controlled by them for ages.
  7. Commuting has been interesting this month - and tonight should be a record home trip if the wind continues to blow the way it did this morning! Last night was fun - a bit of rain then sunny. Going past Kleinbaai harbour Sun is out at Franskraal! Could actually see the Perseid meteor shower last night. A pic from last weeks commute
  8. Some new happenings in the overberg - local rider, pic by Wayne Reiche
  9. http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/jcl/rides%20to%20do.html has most of the info you need. The above route is the black route and from the de uijlenes is about 18km with about 750m of elevation. Add another 26 or so kms if you ride from the spar (mostly tar) It's lekka - got everything, tough climbs, fast smooth dh, fast rocky dh, fast off camber dh, We have put in some jumps on the avoca section (down to the dam) that are fun, and a rocky berm - so try and do it more than once because everything is so much more fun once you know what's there. The second climb is for the fit and for the views. The race includes this and some more on 215 (which can't be accessed other than on the day - 19th sep), but pm me during december and I might be able to take you there. There is a video of the first three dh's on the event page. Another route is the lighthouse route from franskraal, but include the klipfontein sea front = many people think it is not rideable, but it is! Also at low tide from pearly beach to franskraal if the SE is blowing. If fatbikes are something you would like to try - speak to Dave at the roundhouse, or Dave at Saxonlodge

  12. I think Tubed has made some very valid points here and in some of his other posts - and I feel he has got a very good grip on the behind the scenes thinking of sanparks. It might actually be good if the tokai mtb committee can read through all the history between the public and the powers that be - they might not be that hopeful of what actually happens in the future and realise that a different tack might be needed. In the past what was negotiated locally meant squat when the decision makers pulled their weight from up north - and tubes' point about the revenue stream has to be taken into consideration. It is also NB to note that some of the past folk involved where ex-foresters, botanists and generally people that love the area and it's richness. I just feel that we don't need to cover all the same roads again and come up short. The thing is - tokaimtb might have considered all this and read through all the history - we just just didn't know. Would it be possible to mail the past newsletters to those who have subscribed only now.
  13. Ok - have signed up for the newsletter - so no need to ping
  14. Those of us outside the loop have no idea what TokaiMTB is doing - get a mail list going so that we can be reliably informed, and offer help and ideas.
  15. When we were at the Night harvest and you looked across the valley to the other side - there was a defined building line - except the shack area. Look at Knysna and a few other places. Political will is a funny thing - it morphs and shapes to whoever is at the top. We can be thankful though that TM is a world heritage site - it will help in the long run. But like DJR said - big business is also not the answer - we need ideas. I read a publication put out by Scott a while ago (2009) on how some of the Swiss and French bike parks started - and often it is the case where it is one person driving the process - either for the love of biking - or money. In this case it was the love of biking - and he needed to get the whole community involved for it to work. Look where those bike parks are now. Hard work - the thing is - who is up to that, and how can he or she be supported. There are some local SA examples...........
  16. Sanparks is driven by political agendas - so whoever is at the helm influences the direction. When the whole public participation process started re Tokai deplantation (some then still called it deforestation), the decision makers only pretended to listen - and spent truck loads of money doing so, money that could have built trails. At one point they flew 6 delegates down from Pretoria to smile at those who thought they might be listened to. So I am not sure whether Sanparks with their current leadership is healthy for mountain bikers - some creative thinking needs to be done! Maybe a brainstorm evening - to get as many ideas as possible - just one really good idea is needed.
  17. OK - they have listed a funky fynbos festival page at photo city http://www.photocity.co.za/gallery/Funky-Fynbos-Festival/38/page1/
  18. The photos should be up on Monday next week - taken by the Gansbaai photo club. Will be listed here http://www.photocity.co.za/galleries/. The sports gallery is still empty, but I was told they would start loading them this week. I took some shots at the tower water point (41km), pm me your number and email address and I'll send them to you
  19. Thanks to all who rode! Couldn't have asked for better weather. The single speed guy on the 41km, crazy.
  20. Provisional results are up http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/jcl/Funky%20Fynbos%20Festival%20MTB%202014%20Results%201.pdf Any changes can be found here at a later stage http://www.great-time.co.za/Results/
  21. That will be the best way to do it! The guys that have raced it said it is very hard! A section has been added in the middle of the 40km to give the legs some rest, but generally if you're not going up, you're going down - long stretches at a time. There is lots of variation in the track as well, so no time to get bored
  22. On the second climb of the 40km you get to a beacon frequented by the Grootbos quests as it has an almost 360 degree view of the area, from Pearly beach to the Akkedisberg (Salmonsdam) to the Hermanus mountains. http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/jcl/News%20pictures/helderfontein.jpg
  23. The 10km has now got a total elevation of about 200m, normally it is a spoon route, but due to the activities at Flowervalley we can't use the same route back. It has actually been a blessing as the new route is much better, even though it is a little harder on the legs. Below is a photo of the highest point on the 10km, you climb from the bluegums you see in the valley. http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/jcl/News%20pictures/10km%20high%20point.jpg
