  1. I have an 830 with the same problem. I ride with a Varia, Quarq and HRM Pro. As a minimum it happens once every ride, most times more than once: all sensors are disconnected. Considering that I commute a fair distance daily, that is a lot of crashes. Fortunately, in my case, within about a minute the software seems to recover and reconnect the sensors; not always though, on the odd occassion only a reset will work. Annoyingly the Varia often changes from flashing to solid mode after a crash, which is not optimal if you don't notice it. Considering the rain we've had here in the last while I can say that the fact that the touchscreen lock does not work consistently and causes weird display issues is my top grievance at the moment. I've kept all firmware updated to the latest at all times, the latest firmware seems to have exarcerbated the problem but that is hard to quantify. None of the above solves the problem of course but at least now I know I'm not the only one...
  2. I've done this. Perhaps not quite as you intend because gravel from Centurion to JHB south is very difficult to achieve. Where are you based in Centurion, perhaps we can meet up at some stage and I can share some of the route info. If you're not keen to meet pop me a PM and I can share a track of some kind. In my case I ended in Knysna but I guess the last part to Wellington shouldn't be too hard.
  3. If I may ask (hopefully not seen as a hijack) where do you buy those?
  4. Sho. Let me answer one at a time. 12sp is optional, 11sp is also fine. I am on a 29er. I have 780 and could not imagine wangling 800 bars through traffic. I would love 2.4 but they just-just don't fit. I cannot imagine 150mm of travel, nevermind 170mm, I'm on a hardtail ( and sometimes SS) and would not change it for the world. I don't have the guts or skill for the kind of thing that requires 170mm of travel. Finally, at my age the WC is something you watch on TV 🙂
  5. I would not say peer pressure (I wish I had someone to ride with). I'm struggling to find good spares, that is the main reason. I'm currently running a 1x10 SRAM setup on a 29er. I commute daily so the spares turnover is an issue. I'm happy with 1x10 (more than good enough for greater JHB region). I'm also happy with my wheels (which are HG) and would prefer not to spend money buying a new hub (or freehub). Nevertheless, I'm open to suggestions/criticism.
  6. @RobertWhitehead @MORNE Your wisdom please: I'm somewhat in the same boat needing to upgrade from 10 speed. So if sticking to HG what are the best options from SRAM and Shimano, do they both do HG options? I've tried looking on various websites but the options are confusing and as you say, they're keen to lock you into their preference and thus tend to obscure anything else.
  7. This. Cannot agree more. I commute, and since switching to Assos it has been a massive improvement. My total costs in terms of bibs and cream has actually gone down. I used to ride other brand bibs and apply plenty of Chamois cream (acutally BumCream from faithful to nature or the Assos one). I found that it ruined the bibs in next to no time and didn't really help, still got saddle sores.
  8. I've owned the 122CDI for a long time now. Unbelievable vehicle. Still gets about 8 litres/100km on long trips. That's not a typo, and yes it is the 3 litre engine. Which brings me to my biggest gripe with the new V-class: why the small engine? My other gripe: the Blue Efficiency is great while it lasts but very expensive to replace when it goes (and it will). One other comment: I use a tow hitch mounted rack, far more convenient than that crazy rack shown here. All in all though, in a perfect world, I would get another one of these but right now mine is just fine.
  9. OK thanks. That's a little close for comfort, I'll need to keep an eye out and alter my routine for a while.
  10. If possible could you please indicate at roughly what time this happened. Apologies for replying so long after the original post but I don't always get time for the The Hub. I commute fairly close to there and any additional information will make a difference. Thanks.
  11. Alrighty. Thanks for all the information folks. @Frosty, I did see that on the GCN website (and I did look at the GCN thread on the hub but it seemed somewhat stagnant), but my concern was that if I have registered via SA can I still watch stuff if it gets blocked. It seems I can. Mostly I intend to watch the XCO and DH so for my purposes then GCN+ sounds fine. Most likely the annual subscription will end up about the same as 7 months (roughly the length of the XCO/DH season) of monthly subscriptions, which isn't cheap but probably worth it.
  12. Hoping for a word of advice from those of you who are not going the DSTV route and are going the GCN+ route: If you have a GCN+ subscription that you initiated from South Africa (does that matter?) and you are geo-blocked due to local rights issues, can you use that same GCN+ subsscription plus a VPN to watch the geo-blocked content? I'm trying to figure out if I should go for GCN+, Discoveryplus, DSTV or something else (not yet defined) but I want to be sure before forking over the hard-earned cash. Any advice? I already miss Redbull...
  13. Sad to say, but I agree. I'd like to support the local industry but right now I'm just not feeling the love. If you're old school, and you ride a hardtail (or rigid SS in my case too) and you're not on 12 speed and AXS or Di2 it seems you're not worth catering for anymore.
  14. Sounds like that could work. Who do you use online. My experience has been that many of the European and North-American sites will not ship to South Africa, especially not SRAM products. Or is that where the global shipper part comes in?
  15. I'm not too fussed about gear ratios. Normally I ride 11-36 on the 10s but I'm OK with 32 or 34 at the top. On the 11s I normally ride 11-42. Frankly, I don't know Sunrace that well. Do they have equivalent quality? The reason I ask for the aforementioned types is that they don't rust, shift well, and don't weigh too much. So, if Sunrace has an option that ticks those boxes then I could definitely look at that.
  16. Thanks. The second I saw this I went there but sad to say that neither PG1070 nor the 11-speed cassettes were in stock. Guess I was too slow. Anyway, thanks for the advice, I left a "back in stock" email with them, who knows, maybe I get lucky.
  17. Hi Hubbers, I've done the rounds: Both at the various LBS and online. I cannot seem to find SRAM cassettes. Specifically, I'm looking for a PG1070 and a XG1175 or XG1195. Does anyone know what is going on, why are SRAM components so hard to find? Any ideas where I can buy (in Gauteng that is)? All advice appreciated, thanks. Cheers.
  18. Thanks for the replies, and apologies for the delay in response, lunch time is my only real gap. I watched the video and frankly it just doesn't answer the question. In the video they say at a moderate HR EPOC accumulates slowly and at a higher HR it accumulates faster. In my case the exact opposite was true, I rode at a higher HR and yet ended with a lower score. Bizarre. With respect to TrainingPeaks et al I have often though about it and not done it but now might be the time, from the reading I've done it seems TrainingPeaks is the best but also more costly. Maybe a trial period is in order? In the interest of science, this morning I decided to turn off my power and just ride at the same pace and try to get the same HR and see what comes of it. Well the answer was pretty astonishing. I averaged about 1% HR less than usual and my speed was about the same but the load calculated this morning was only 36! So, to a certain extent I think this implies that power data is weighed more heavily (at least on the Edge 830 which I am using). If I remember tomorrow I will do it the other way around and remove the HRM and use only power. Will update here what the outcome is. As before, I welcome any and all, even criticisms, of my largely ad-hoc approach.
  19. Hi All, I commute to work at the same time each day. The distance and conditions from one day to the next are pretty much the same. Comparing one day to the next the load that Garmin calculates for the ride does not make sense. Today I rode with a higher average HR, higher max HR, higher average power, higher max power and higher nominal power. So, in summary, all my numbers were much higher today compared to yesterday (by about 20%) and yet today Garmin calculated my load as 88 whereas yesterday it was 144. I am completely perplexed. I have not changed any settings from one day to the next. What am I doing wrong? Any comments or suggestions welcome. I have done a bit of reading on the web around this but have not found any meaningful information that may allow me to make sense of this. Thank you.
  20. Give us an update if you don't mind. FB is blocked on my side and I was also interested to know what is happening.
  21. Damn. I hope Rob and Bart stay on, I know they have their weird idiosyncrasies which annoy some people but in general they make a positive contribution to the sport and broadcast. Maybe we get lucky and Claudio can make a comeback too...
  22. How about SRAM PG1070 or PC1071 (laugh if you want but I'm still on 10s)
  23. Sedgies is OK for now. River flowing over the Karatara and Hoogekraal low water bridges so riding up to Hoogekraal will mean you get a fun river crossing. The mouth is open and flowing strongly. You may want to not say "artificially closed" unless you want to raise the ire of some people.
  24. There is a way. It is known as Die ou wapad. It goes via Duiwelskop. You can pretty much follow that road shown. The last section up the pass itself is demonic, I have only managed to ride it once, many years ago. Now it has been so buggered by @$$#!~$% people on scramblers that it is mostly unrideable unless you are Schurter or McAskill. It is actually a fairly historic piece of road. I can bore you with the history but rather just ride and enjoy. Suffice it to say that it was once used in the Cape Pioneer.
  25. So glad somebody else agrees. I've done both, but the Sabie Ultra (probably about 10 years back now) was a beast. Somehow those long section of the Attakwas in the kloof itself seem almost tranquil; but that could just be my memory fading after not having had the chance to ride it for a few years now due to the mid to late January start.
