  1. My wife weighs +-48kgs. In order for her fork (Marzocci Bomber TST air fork) to have enough give I pump it around 50psi when the recommended minimum is about 100psi. It worked well for a year but on the last two rides she finishes the ride and all the air has escaped from the fork. The last two rides were very muddy. It still pumps up fine - just at some stage in the ride it deflates. Do you think? 1. The fork needs a service and then it will be back to normal (R500). 2. The fork is broken - buy a new fork. 3. Pump the fork to the minimum psi and it should be fine - the air leaking is because of the under inflation. 4. Something else.
  2. I have saved truckloads on stuff from CRC. Had to build it all myself though...but I am willing to pay the price. Generally I get my stuff in 6 days (so the following Monday if I order on a Sunday).
  3. Hmmnnn...interesting...and useful...I am wondering if I can rent you to come and ride with us?
  4. Sorry I missed it too (the ride, obv.) If you want to ride do you just pitch up?
  5. You so didn't.
  6. MTB_Roadie - obviously it is far less suspicious if you buy a mixed bike from a cyclist than from someon who is a non-cyclist. Addionally, if someone's pricing is off it means their margins are huge - intersting parallel is that per Carte Blache (about 10 years ago) most stolen cars sell for about R3000 by the original thief.
  7. Tikki - it is only funny if it does not happen to YOU!
  8. The law normally deals with it like this: If you knew or ought have reasonably have known that you are dealing in stolen goods then you are guilty of recketeering, laundering or whatever you want to call it and are guilty as sin. If you keep buying bikes which have OBVIOUSLY been stripped and reassembled for no functional reason then to me you are guilty in the eyes of the law. But screw the law. I friend was riding his bike along the road about five years ago and a pedestrian turned around and shot him at point blank range (without first demanding the bike - luckily he survived). Everytime you buy a bike in suspicious circumstances you are effectively placing the next order and you share in the blood of the next incident like the one above. So both ways - just getting a copy of the ID is not good enough.
  9. It is not enough to just ask for a copy of the ID. If you have 'non cyclist types' bringing in bikes with expensive components mixed with cheap stuff then you KNOW that somewhere out there these things were stolen - probably in a hijacking. Refuse to deal with them. (And please don't come with this BS about not stereotyping people - stereotyping works 90% of the time).
  10. Bikes are being stolen. People are getting hijacked at gunpoint. Within my social circle two hijackings and one shot through the neck. If someone is selling mixed up component bikes (the best way to avoid investigation and recovery) then I want to know more. (P.S. With all due respect Spat being a 'stand up guy' is not mutually exclusive to being a criminal.) Edit: grammar
  11. The driver should slow down and anticipate the biker doing something unpredictable. In first world countries this is done. Glad the kid was ok.
  12. For example: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/80281-scott-spark-35/
  13. My opinion: Like me you are too heavy for light carbon bikes. The 2 seconds you gain on the uphills will all be lost the on the race when the carbon cracks. Look for: 1. A geometry that you like (you have to test this). 2. Reliability (Aulminium or even stainless steel if you want a flexy frame) 3. Comfort.
  14. The XTR has hollow pins (reduces weight). The XT is chrome plated (stops rust). SLX grade has neither.
  15. This sounds awesome. Although last time I rode in Irene my two friends got bike jacked (Nissan Race 2009 ). Have you had any 'issues' on the Dark and Dirty?
  16. Not always - some people experience bad burping or even the tyre coming off the rim on corners - the bead on non-UST is not nearly as tight as the bead on a UST. A lot depends on how tight the tire sits on the rim which is rim dependant as well as tire dependant. I did it with my wife's bike and never had an issue with burping or tyres coming off but I did have endless issues with sidewalls getting ripped.
  17. The diameter of the hole inside the hub is too large for a quick release. It needs to rotate on the axle. The quick release probably needs to go through the centre of the axle. I don't have an axle so I cant't try it. Did you get my PM? First time I tried to use it on the hub - not sure if it worked and where to check for a reply.
  18. You each have suss out the reputation of the other. The one with the better reputation gets to send second.
  19. "if you're running a 135mm spacing I may have an old axle lying around that you can try for the fit. I live in Randpark Ridge so I'm close" That would be amazingly helpful. I think my PM function is disabled. Give me a minute to figure it out.
  20. Thanks Patches I am so confused. The wheel is 135x12mm compatable. I assume this makes it a thru-axle although they sometimes give them different names on the web. I need to convert it to quick release to match my frame. I bought the conversion kit and have some quick releaases but I think I still need the axle. Second question: is you axle hollow or is is it solid? Do they com ein both varieties?
  21. Having the money reflect in your account means nothing. They deposit a stolen cheuque, it reflects and then like ten days later the bank reverses the money as the cheque is stolen. You need to confirm with the bank that the money is by EFT first.
  22. The axle itself - is it specific to a brand of wheel or are they generic to all brands of wheel. I have DT Swiss rims that need an axle and I am waiting for them to reply to my email.
  23. "Us climbers never did have a good forum like this to hang out, perhaps its cause we were always chasing the next route, :-). I would love to know what the storage life is on climbing equipment, all my kit (ropes, Cams, nuts, QDs, etc) was all cleaned, dried and stored in a dark "box", probably about 3-4 years now. " Give 'em a test - let everyone else know!
  24. What angers me is that these criminals do not exist in a vacuum. They live in communities generally close to where the crime occurs. The issue is that the communities either just turn a blind eye or they simply encourage it by enjoying the 'fruits' (money) the crime brings into their community. Criminals can't exisit in communities where people don't turn a blind eye.
  25. The frames used to retail for about R10k and on MTBR most who bought them were happy with them. Then they discontinued them and then they brought them back at a much cheaper price. I got mine from CRC for about R5500 each after import.
