  1. Hi All I have been reading this thread with interest and thought I would add my 2 cents, from a non DH rider perspective. I was riding in Morzine a week ago and it was brilliant. To set the picture, I am not a DH rider and usually ride marathons on a HT or 100mm travel full sus. I had a 160 mm travel bike about two years ago but sold it as I was not using it living in JHB. Only really used it when visiting Tokai or Jonkershoek. Technical skills: I am not bad on a bike and really enjoy fast flowing single track with small jumps and drop off etc. If your idea of mountain biking is long district roads and mowed veld, then Morzine is not the place for you. If you are comfortable and enjoy single track like you find on Tokai or going into the Umko valley, then you will love Morzine. I went with the missus and we rode mostly green and blue tracks, and the PDS trails in between. The trails where great. You don’t need to be smashing the super technical black runs to be riding the best single track you have ever riding. I will post some pictures to show the quality to the “family” green runs to see how good they are. The great thing was the misses could go slower and handle the tracks without too much issue, while I could go a bit faster making them a challenge and there was still plenty on jumps etc to more than challenge my ability. The trails to suit all abilities and the views, no traffic, and the warm weather during our winter, makes this a fantastic mountain bike holiday. You can even hire a road bike and ride some TDF category 1 climbs in and around Morzine if that is your thing. Own bike v hiring I was in Europe for a couple of weeks before going to Morzine, so I could not take my own bike. I hired a car to drive down from Paris so no bike racks. The advantage of hiring a car is that it gives the ability to do some site seeing and we where able to catch a stage of the TDF on the way back to Paris. I also stayed slightly out of Morzine so I could easily drive into town to go riding the for diner etc. The price off accommodation was better slightly out of town. We left the hired bikes at the shop everyday and just picked them up in the morning and dropped them off when we where done. I hired an AM bike, which was in good condition and could more then handle anything I could through at it. Unless you are a serious DH, and AM bike is all you need. What is important is the slack head tube angle and at least 140 to 160 mm travel. For 2 bikes for 4 days cost me R6 700. If I was going directly to Morzine and was going to use an AM when back in SA, I would look at purchasing one. Equipment Almost all the riders where in full face helmets, neck braces and pads etc. We where the idiots with a normal riding helmet and no padding etc. It was good enough for me, but there where a few jumps I would have hit harder if I had the added protection. But there where also a few occasions when me in my dorky helmet and no pads was outrunning fully kitted riders in DH kit. The cool thing is that everyone is there to have a good time and no one cares what you wear or what runs you do etc. If you have the cash and can see your self using it again, a purchase or hire of the full face helmet and pads is recommended. I would not go back without a kidney belt! After a few days of bouncing around and not used that type of riding, my kidneys took a serious hammering and had to take a day off then buy a kidney belt. Riding until you piss blood is a term a don’t use often!
  2. Cube Stereo 650b in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at Enduro Series Bike Radar Trail Bike of the Year Enough said. I have heard a rumour that the 2014 models will be avialble is SA http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/bikes-and-gear/bikes/mountain/full-suspension/1366362157323-6hkus354c2h2-399-75.jpg
  3. Wow - Just back from Morzine. What an awesome riding experience. Defintely worth going if you enjoy riding technical single track. You dont need to be a full on down hill junky. Next time I will take a cadence meter just to see how much I didn't peddel Just a recommendation to anyone going, make sure you pack a kidney belt.
  4. Thanks, but I was not implying actually riding uphill. I am all for the lifts.
  5. Eish I am getting super ampded (3 more weeks) I am more of a XC and marathon rider who enjoys the technical stuff. I think a lot of the DH tracks will be wasted on me. I will be the dude who looks like a lost newbie. Please just point me uphill to the nearest track!
  6. Booked a place on Owners Direct for me and the lady Essert Romand is a quiet hamlet just 10 minutes outside Morzine
  7. Unfortunatley, cant take my own bike. Next time a will organise for 2 weeks and defiletly take own bike. It is last minute, as I am France for work, got a quote from Alpine sports the XC bikes are new 2013 GT Force 2's and are €60 per day, and the road bikes are either GT Carbon Elites or GT Series 3's, all new and are either €45 or €35 per day. I hope someone has the new Cube Stereo 160 65b that I can hire (i can only dream)!
  8. sweet. I will be renting a bike, as I am in Poland and Paris the week before on business and cant lug a bike with me. So not sure what bike I will be riding. I will be the dude hanging on for life, out of control
  9. Was going to spend some time watching tdf and touring, but after reading other threads on the hub, I have booked a week in Morzine Will be there 8th to 13th (only 1 week) More of a cross country and AM rider than DH, but still cant wait. Must grab a few beers with you dudes one night
  10. Some feedback Through the bit of research I have done, it looks like I am going for the Morzine option. Book 1 week accomodation. I few cheaper options but +- 500 Euro for a week (sleeps 4) Will hire bikes (would prefer my bike, but will be on business in Poland and Paris before hand so cant drag it around) Hire mountian bikes for 3 days and a road bike for a day or 2.(=- Euro 50 per day) The advantage is that I can do a bit of big travel, cross country and road. The guided tours through Provens are all +- Euro 1000 per person, will not all meals included. So that is at leat 2k for 2 of us.
  11. Thanks for all the very usefull info. I need to find some time to work through all this and make desicions. What is interesting, as pointed out by Omega Man's link, it is cheaper than Epic, with these awesome options and rides available
  12. mmmm.. that looks very good. A bit out of my budget at the moment though. I was also looking at the Cube Bike days but apparenlty they have not confirmed the venue yet. It was in Austria last year, but hey have closed some of the trails.
  13. Thank you for your very usefull information. I rode the Champs Elysee on one of those hire bikes in the middle of a Saturday morning last year. Traffic was hectic, but I had fun and was was one of things that just had to be done!
  14. Hi All I will be in France in July and want to go watch a stage at La Tour, followed by 4 or 5 days cycling in France. I am hoping that some Hubbers have some experience and can give any advise or recommendations. I am thinking of the south of France (Provence) or the north eastern part. Should I look at road trip or mountain biking? Anyone used a tour company that they recommend? I am not sure how much you can actually see watching the tour live, so not sure if it is worth trying to see more than 1 or 2 stages. I don’t have final dates yet, so don’t know if it will be flat or mountain stages. My thoughts are to see 1 or 2 stages and then get away from the crowds and enjoy some cycling through small towns with good food and drink. Any other advice (or probably abuse) is most welcome.
  15. Not to hijack the thread but grey imports have a serious negative effect on the whole cycling community. There is more than enough competition to ensure very competitive pricing. Local agents and shops sends lots of money on events, sponsorships, advertising etc etc, without which, there will no magazines, sponsorships, event entry fees will go up. This is where most of your so called "over inflated" money ends up. This is like hiring a Malawian gardener and then complain about unemployment. No more comments from me, please continue discussing the bikes
  16. Mate of mine used it during a bike jacking. Handed his bike over but still 3 jumped him. Sprayed it full on into attackers face. Dude dropped like a fly, two ran off then dropped the bike, so got it back. I am keen to try it on a few baboons in Tokai parking lot (I have not done it yet before on the baboon huggers jump on my back )
  17. Cube Elite Super HPC SL 29er or Cube Reaction GTC SL are top of my list. Rode it at the Ride Before You Buy.....WOW!!!
