So much has been said about attitude, accountability, visible policing, enforcing the law, etc., before the tragic death of the late Burry Stander. We can post as much comments about these inciudents as we want. we even get at each other as cyclist because of the behaviour of some. We need definitive action by the relevant authorities. The question should be: how do we get the authorities do take the required action? Can our cycling authorities come up with appropriate action for the traffic/law enforcement to respond to the outcry.
  2. Firstly, we wish them a speedy recovery from their injuries. We as cyclist can shout that enough is enough, but until such time as those in authority take some serious action, it will continue. What will it take for the desired action to be taken?
  3. From now on I will ride with a black armband everytime I go out on a ride! We really need a massive protest ride. We should get PPA involved.
  4. Glad that you are OK. There will be times when you would have to cycle alone. All you can do, is to be vigilant and avoid the hotspots. Safe cycling in 2013 to all cyclists!
  5. Thanks guys for the posts. Frik Erasmus is a very close friend of mine. I wish him and Leroy Kapp both well with the recovery from this horrible accident. Whilst we can take the utmost of care when we do our rides, we cannot anticipate that some drunken idiot will hit us. Should SAPS apprehend the driver, we should stand together and ensure that he is dealt with according to the full might of the law. The moonlight mass should be turned into a sunlight mass and we should organise a protest along the lines of a Cosatu e-toll march. with our bikes one morning. I would be willing to take a lead here in Cape Town. Let's speak to PPA and see what we can do.
  6. Does anyone know of an accident that happened yesterday where a cyclist was hit by a drunk driver on Kromdraai, The Cradle? Please share with me the information.
  7. Without starting a political debate on this cycling forum, I think that Grinder's comments about 'savages' and a few 'elitist white okes on the bicycles' are way off the mark. There are riders other than 'white okes' who participate in the DC. For the sake of all participants, we would want these disturbances to be over by the time of the event. I am sure that PPA and the organisers will keep a close watch on events.
  8. The DC is a very different ride for different teams. In my opinion, it is good for the slower/social teams and not to the racing teams. It may allow the social teams to proceed to that point before having too many stops. After that, all the stops you have will add to your riding time. It is good for the organisers to try different things that would make the event great for both racers and social teams. The two types of riders have different expectations, i.e., fast finishing time and just finishing. To each his own!
  9. No, interested in acquiring a set and would like to hear what it is like before buying.
  10. Has anyone been riding with a set of 38mm Darkhorse carbon clincher wheels? Any comments on its durability, etc.
  11. It is not strange any longer that when crimes of these nature are perpetrated that the criminals have supporters who throw the race card at those who becry the crime. Would we ever reach a point where a criminal is just that, irrespective of race. The freedom that we should have acquired some 18 years back have denied many of just that - freedom to the things they love. You have to consider crime befroe you can consider doing anything first. Where can I ride my bike, where can I walk/hike, where can I live without being overly threatened. All we want to do is ride our bikes! True justice need to prevail!
  12. Riding on Selle San Marco Zoncolan with cut-out. Very good. Have also tried Fizik Arione. Arione allows you to move a lot on the saddle. I don't really move much so San Marco was better. Zoncolan with cut out in carbon with carbon rails weigh +- 145 grams.
  13. It's assumed that the guy who had the bike in his possession stole it! The owner should pursue the matter with the police so that the matter is cleared and the eventual thief brought to book. Those in possession of stolen bikes should also be prosecuted. They create the market for thieves. However, good work in recovery of the bike!
  14. Wishing him strenght and a speedy recovery. I posted some weeks back that all cyclists should stage a ride-in to the main traffic control centres to hand over a memorandum calling for more severe punishment for motorists who is at fault in an accident involving a cyclist. Recently there was a call for such action when pedestrians are involved. Some cyclists should also consider their attitude towards other road users. I have had experiences where I was told to f-off after I kindly asked a fellow cyclist to stop at a red robot where there was quite a bit of traffic.
  15. The pass to the cherry farm is called Swaarmoed Pass. The road is completely tarred. When the DC was held from Ceres a few years back, it went up there. You can ride out of Ceres towards Touws River over Theronsberg Pass (not too steep and long) and then back and ascent Swaarmoed. There is a false flat after about 11 kms of climbing and then it heads up gradually to the turnaround point . A beautiful ride.
  16. In the Cape Town area we have workshops that do very good work. The turnaround time may sometimes be a little longer than what you would expect, but the quality of work more than makes up for time.
  17. With Team Sky having Cav as team leader only means that they don't have someone up to GC challenge. Cav will withdraw long before major climbs. Basso must be a favourite. With the type climbs in the Giro, it would be difficult for any one rider to do the Giro and Tour double without using some unnatural substance!
  18. We have as much a right to ride on the road. As cyclists (road and mtb) we need to show our dismay and organise a mass demonstration, such as the workers. Maybe we should have a big ride-in in the cities on a weekday morning and disrupt traffic to show our dismay.Condolences to the family.
  19. You can purchase it in UK for +- R1800 -R1900, including postage. Campag super record retails for around R3700 in SA.
  20. Has anyone used a Miche campag 11 speed supertype campag compatible cassette? Please share your experience with regard to shifting, etc.
  21. I agree that the littering is not acceptable, but all of us roadies do not deserve to be called pigs. I have over many years and at many funrides, of which I do one or two these days, tried to get co-operation in that regard. However, most riders will not. There are indeed many selfish cyclist whose attitude towards other cyclist and motorists compound the issues that we experience these days.
  22. The Policemen responsible for this tragic accident should be dealt with in the same manner the taxi driver was who caused 10 children to die in his taxi in Eersterivier in the Western Cape. They should face murder charges and not culpable homicide. They surely must have driven recklessly. Condolences to the loved ones of our fellow cyclists.
