  1. Is it possible to have a time alert repeat on an Edge 500 - not just once? e.g. drink reminders every 20 minutes.

  4. adriana - the old bike - is now the proud owner of some new bar tape, an old saddle and some shiny new pedals as well as some slightly used vittoria rubber. <<< carbon bike (megan) vs alu bike (adriana) >>> 10 speed (11-25) vs 8 speed (12-23) 8kg vs 11kg the daily trek (no pun intended) up northcliff hill is sure gonna get a lot more interesting awesome to finally finish the rebuild tho!
  5. hey man, welcome to the Hub! biggest thing i found when i started was the extra costs involved once you've bought the bike. Helmets, shoes, pedals / cleats, small pump, floor pump, Co2 bombs, lights,cages, bottles, camelbacks, glasses, tyre levers, saddle bags, multi tools, bar ends, bibs, shirts, rain jackets, gloves,bike computers,.... dude it never ends and thats before you get to the heart rate monitors, tubeless tyre conversion, bike carrier for your car, club fees, CSA , the new bike once your misses catches the bug and so forth. as with what the other guys have been saying above - start off second hand and make sure you budget for at least a good helmet ,gloves and some spares to start off with. you never know, you may find you might not even enjoy it after a few weeks! doubt that will happen tho! once the bug bites, it bites hard! enjoy.

  7. Last rode this race in 2003 and remember saying NEVER again. well, 2011 and I'm entered , lets pray its not too brutal. Heres hoping the winter training pays off!
  8. yeah it wouldn't hurt... but its more about limiting wear n tear on the better bike to be honest.
  9. by resistance training i meant training with more weight, not forcing everyone else to hang 2kms back in order to avoid you! hahahahah. although if you did that on your MTB and rode through the game reserve,I'm sure that will help with your overall speed!
  10. true, i guess il always be thinking "gosh, soooo heavyyyy" must find more gears" - but on the flip side- that bike has a lot of memories for me and i think it will be rad to whoop the mates butts with my old school heavy bike ,while they struggle with their larny sub 8kg beasts. and then as i say, when it comes down to race day / those long 3hr+ excursions id feel as though I've lost 5kgs! and i won't wanna cry as much when i damage something on it. well I've been fixing up the oldie as a bit of a side project anyways (even if i decide not to use it often-its always nice to have a backup bike.) all she needs now is a minor service , some bar tape and some 2nd hand pedals. luckily i have a saddle / some newish tires . bit of a mix mash of old group set parts and old set of rims i had built ages ago etc... etc... must say I'm looking forward to giving her a go again once she's ready to roll!

Following on from another recent thread... i want to find out if anyone is training and racing on different bikes and if its worthwhile? i ride on avg 13 or so hours a week and have a light Carbon 10 spd bike - as well as a heavier aluminum 8 speed. Id like to use the old one for the usual training and save the lighter (more expensive to maintain) one for racing and the longer rides. Thoughts? would it help improve race times? I'm thinking it would be like resistance training?
  12. I've heard a lot of issues re the polars and mac. Apparently the Cs500 is compatible- but only with the online software as the polar software doesn't run on mac. Looks like the edge 500 is the answer. now just to find a cheap one! how reliable is the HRM on the garmin? can it show you your BPM as a % of max?

  14. Im looking at a new Bike Computer along the lines of a Garmin Edge 500, Polar Cs500 , Bryton etc... anybody using an apple Mac with these? Which is best suited to use with a mac?
  15. +1 inner tubes are about the only quality products you will pick up at Cajees (make sure they're in a sealed box!)
  16. i just use an elastic band to strap that sucker onto the clip - no rattling- and not permanent should your clip break.
  17. Have a look at Fittrack.co.za - There are loads of plans based around goal times for races as well as how much time you have to train per week. Personally Ive seen really big improvements since i started using it. The programs are structured around periodisation and base work - much like you will read about in Joe Friels book. My favorite book about cycling training though is "Serious Cycling - by Edmund Burke,Phd" - i actually prefer it to Joe Friels book.
  18. 6h30 - as i mention very social - waiting for others etc... if there are loads of people,we usually split a faster / slower group "fast average" 25km +
  19. usually -60-80km - very social - beginner rides are around 35kms?
  20. where do you stay? we have a social group that does rides from the Spar in Parkview on sundays (all levels) and beginner / slow rides a few sats a month as well?
  21. 2011 Fondriest TF1 - Had the pleasure of riding this beast of a bike last week with Campagnolo super record and Camapag Eurus wheel set - Price? Far too much for a bicycle thats for sure.
