  1. ive always been a a fan of The GT frames - but in your case go for the Scott as the size / comfort factor is most important . both bikes will do the job.
  2. Try to really emphasise throwing your weight back. Maybe try crouching forward to load the suspension first. You gotta get your butt way back off the seat so the wheel can lift high enough. Pushing with your feet will help get the bottom bracket more in front of you as well. Make sure you keep those arms straight in order to pull back evenly! I suggest learning to wheelie first - as the other posters suggested - keep a finger on the back brake in case you feel youre gonna flip backwards. Once you are used to finding that balance point more easily you can try shifting your weight around more. learn on a grass field and wear pads if u need to - whatever will give you the extra confidence you need.
  3. just pickup one of the bikes and bounce the suspension, then see how quickly someone assists you .hahahaha
  4. " right you sissies with the double suspension, make way for the shaved legs of destruction!!!! " bwahahahahaha
  5. thanks for the feeback guys, one last query - are these events seeded? i would imagine with events where there are lots of singletrack for example it can be an issue getting stuck behind slower / less skilled riders? would my road seeding affect where i start at all? or is it a completely different system? - my road seeding is currently at a 12.2 odd index so dont wanna get chucked in with the hardcore guys first time out
  6. ive heard about the babaas events, a good starter venue would you say?
  7. Take the hit and opt out of the event bud, no need for additional stress while you're trying to get your ticker back in shape. Watch your diet while you're off the bike in order to make sure you come out of the rest period without additional weight to burn off.
  8. Morning All Looking for some advice with regards to entering my first MTB race (one day) . i have been racing Road events for ages and after recently getting a new MTB would like to give an MTB event a bash. is there a standard format like with the road events? e.g. the long route 100kms and a shorter say 60km what is marathon, half marathon ultra etc...? & how do you judge the technical difficulty of an event? i would say im fit enough to survive a 50km semi technical ride - nothing too hardcore to start off with tho! please any advice would be appreciated
  9. Either save more until you can get a carbon frame or look second hand. Carbon really does ride that much better. (aside from something like a caad 10 maybe)
  10. Yes, i think for a new full carbon with full 105 its a good price. Cant go wrong.
  11. i bought the 2011 monza last year. one of the best road bikes ive ever had. ive done over 13 000 kms on it so far. just upgrade the saddle as its very flexy. overall fantastic value for money. The full carbon frame really is worth the extra bucks. keep in mind the monza has a std crankset over the compact on the strela. heres mine.
  12. Recently bought an awesome GT hardtail and a new set of cleats / shoes. set it up similar to my roadbike and felt great for the first week, however over the last few days im having pain on the outside of my right knee. im happy with the stem (changed to a shorter one). saddle height and position etc... etc... and feel its got something to do with my cleat setup. could it be possible the bottom bracket being wider on the mtb has affected my knee alignment? left side feels perfect. ive adjusted the float and it now has a bit more freedom on the painful side. but ja, i dont know if ive sorted it out, or if its still pain from a few days ago. and advice on how to adjust a cleat when the pain is on the outside of the knee? should i move it wider? change the angle? move it forwards / back? not sure what else to try to get it sorted and after blowing the budget on the bike, i wont be able to go for bg /ergofit ro anything for a while. any advice will be appreciated. cheers
  13. cool, will be there.
  14. so confirming 18h00 at dunkeld?
  15. nah , social pace for sure.
  16. Anyone still keen to leave from dunkeld to meet bunch on friday? have a few mates who would rather meet there and go through together to join the mass in braamfontein - give us an idea of a meeting time and we can arrange further.
  17. how do you guys rate the deore groupsets? do you need to go as high as slx? and one last query is 9 speed good enough? or is 10 worth the extra money? thanks for all the help so far!
  18. like using the stans kits etc... can i take existing tyres / that use tubes and convert them this way? without having to go ust - is this what you mean by R600 p wheel? do you need special tyres? a lot of these bikes come with the kenda block 8's which ive read are rubbish in more than one review so if better tyres are needed in order to convert to tubeless, can you suggest anything?
  19. also, could someone pls give me an idea of what it costs to do a tubeless conversion after purchase?
  20. budget of 7000 - 8000k for a new MTB looking at the following, all approx same price: without wanting to start yet anotehr 26 vs 29 debate - ive read a lot about the 29er craze and am a little stumped as to whether to get a med / low spec 29er such as the examples below - or if its better to get a 26" at a better spec? im leaning towards the alpine 1 personally as i can then have decent parts should i want to get a carbon frame later on? or is it worth it to go 29er even though the spec is less? thoughts? will be riding spruit mostly and wont be doing any serious stage races or anything. i need something that can handle a bit of throwing around / abuse and will last a while. 26" Silverback alpine 1 / GT avalanche 1 (both rock shox / 9spd deore w xt rear derailleur) or 29" Silverback Vida 4(acera 9 / slx rear / suntour) / gt karakoram 2 (deore rear / alivio 9 / rockshox)
  21. and the guys behind you wont have to look at your plumber crack hanging out.
  22. thats awesome spec for the price! damn - are the suntour shocks really that bad? i had an old rst on my trek 4300 (maybe ten yrs back) that did the job fine?
  23. prob is the limited budget - have to support my road habit too! hahaha - also keep in mind il need new pedals ,shoes etc... will prob only ride it 2/3 times a week to be honest and as i mentioned, nothing intense - just a bit of bugger 'round with the missus n that.
  24. hi all Looking at buying a cheapie MTB to play with / have as a backup bike for when my roadbike is outta action. Live on the braamfontein spruit so dont need anything too hectic. Id like to spend around 5 k and am looking at the following bikes: 26" GT avalanche 3 Merida TFS 100 Silverback Stride 10 or, im thinking perhaps a 29" (help keep up with the roadies?) GT Karakoram 3 Silverback VIDA 5 to my knowledge all have 100mm suntour forks (cheapies i assume) ,hydraulic disc's and 8 spd alivio. any thoughts on these? so many options ot choose from!
  25. no carnival city 2012? is that 'cos the elites raced a longer route? or cos it didnt use racetec?
