  1. Ooooo! I've had no probs with either, but is it really necessary to change the chips. Here's a suggestion to WT. When we register at our next event, have a rep swopping them out and registering them at the same time. I am sure that the transponder(?) inside could be re-used. That way the new branding gets out there, and we do not have to fork out another R400 (wife and I)
  2. So VOTE. We have an election coming up. Speak to your party, get some kind of commitment to bring up the issue for public debate, whatever. Voting is our biggest weapon. Watch a ruling party start coming to the party (sorry, could not resist) when its majority is being eroded.
  3. Nice legs though.
  4. "Then again, is the expectation of motorists that we ridein single file. Not an unreasonable expectation and it would be polite to move to the side of the road so that a motorist can pass." The simple fact is that the law states that cyclists MUST ride single file except if one cyclist is passing another. A motorist can and should expect the law to be adhered to, just as he is expected to. The fact that motorists and cyclists do not obey traffic laws contributes a lot to this problem. I do not have any real solution to the problem, but I always try to wave in a friendly manner to motorists, catch their eye, etc and have had them respond in non-aggressive ways, even to the extent of letting me across intersections where they had right of way. My 2c
  5. I was riding along in a bunch and in front of me, some young(ish) woman chucks a large lump of tinfoil onto the edge of the road. I asked her who she thought might pick it up. A rather racist answer followed (which I won't repeat here as that is another topic). She then said she did not want to carry the rest of her potato. Ironically there was the 2nd last waterpoint 500m further on. She could have tossed it there. Here is the race number E(?)L 2637. Have a bit more pride in your country, even if you do not have much in yourself! Name and shame, and let the clubs know. I am not sure how to follow up myself. Perhaps one of the "more experienced" hubbers can help.
  6. Thanks TK, I think a bit of a briefing note with the registration would have alleviated a lot of stress
  7. Never mind the marshalling, the traffic access and egress was horrendous. The main route to and from the parking crossed the race route. Not the greatest planning! I do not know the area very well, but I am sure a few sign posts to the back entrance for the parking, and an alternative route to avoid the finishing cyclists would have been relatively simple to do. Perhaps the location does not allow for this?
  8. Guess I have post envy
  9. yeah - how the hell did he get ephedrine. Where did he get it from? all medicines containing ephedrine have been made schedule 6. Which puts them on the same level as morphine There's no way in hell the doctor would be prescribing S6 drugs for cold or flu www.100percentme.co.uk/store/1181295719.665LID0.pdf After reading this page' date=' I am of the conclusion that ephedrine isn't as potent as you would have me believe. [/quote]Many of the common or garden decongestants have now been re-scheduled to S6. My doctor prescribed Clarityne-D for me a few weeks ago. The pharmacy filled it, no sweat. I guess it may have a banned substance in it. Have not checked but it probably does. My point is that an Over the Counter medicine is now a S6 due to a Buareaucratic Process and why would a doctor NOT prescribe an effective medicine. FanD, it seems to me you are VERY emotionally invested in this issue. If you had read Eben's message carefully, he says it was his responsibility to check. He knew the risks, got caught and punished. That is the correct course of action. If you believe he (or anyone else) should continue to be punished, does the same principle apply to every crime. Like having your driver's licence permanently removed for skipping a stop street or talking on your cellphone. Punishments are decided by society, and if they are not right there are mechanisms to change them, by a defined and consensual process. Eben, right or wrong has had his punishment, and having "served his debt to society" should be allowed back in. I think it is highly unlikely he will ever do something like this again. Nor many other hubbers. BTW, if I am sick I will take the medicine prescribed whether or not it contains Eff as I would rather get better quicker. I hardly consider it doping, but accept that the pro's do need to be careful. There are lots of cheats out there, after all. I guess I am one, as I have ridden under the influence of cold meds before.
  10. WTF do you do with eleven bikes? I own less underwear than that....only need 1 pair per day I guess it is just hard to part. They remind you of all your of your rides,
  11. I have 3: 1 steel Tommasini - Road 1 alu Trek - Road 1 (very heavy) Raleigh - MTB and..... A carbon Spez at the bike shop getting the finishing touches. My Xmas prezz to myself The Tomma is going onto a display wall. Graceful retirement. But we will still go for an outing now and then CycleJunkie2008-11-30 12:15:20
  12. Got a Tommasini, 1990 or thereabouts. Has a '94 9 speed DA. The one just before they introduced the "Flight Deck" Has a 54 - 42 Chain ring which is a bit big but is great for training. Original yellow, mint condition with the finest slender forks and stays. Looks too thin to hold one up
  13. Thanks Christie, that has set my mind at rest. I have also read an article or 2, which just left me confused. That is great
  14. I have just bought a new groupset and I was asked what crank length I wanted. What is the difference between the various lengths? How will it affect my riding? Get technical, very technical....
  15. Are you selling these, Token?
  16. Getting my new frame set up in 2 weeks. If it is the right size, and you still have it..... CycleJunkie2008-10-13 07:56:12
  17. If your training rides are usually say 80km, then you will be cramping at the end of a 100k race. Your training on occasion, even if at lower intensity than race effort, should be longer/further than you race. This gets your muscles used to the duration/distance. All the other tips about tempo riding to improve lactate endurance, diet etc are valid too, but if you do not do the distance in training, you will be cramping if you push it in a race. Another thing, you do not get fit by training, you get fit when you recover properly. (a la Joe Friel) So if you have cramped, some sessions of deep tissue massage with stretching will spped up the recovery and help repair the damage. I used to cramp a lot (still do if I push too hard) so have done a lot of research. Also bear in made that everyone is different so what works for some, may not work for you
  18. I also had this problem. It seems to be 2 things. First, I had the USB IR reader that was a long white/cream unit which was very unreliable. I changed this to the one that looks like a flash drive. Since then it works fine. Also make sure it is a USB 2 port, not USB1 IHM (the Polar agents) also told me to make sure the surface the unit is on is relatively cool and that the unit is not too close to the reader so as to get good thermal contrasts. I have since upgraded to Vista but have not loaded Polar yet, so am not sure how that works. I hope it helps.
  19. Another 1/2 cent...... The spruit is public land, for members of the population, not just mtb'ers. All these "unnatural" obstacles being put are ruining the NATURAL state of the spruit for other users, and the fastest way to get cyclists banned from using the spruit is to start pee'ing off the other users. Keep it natural, be polite, give walkers, the elderly and dogs a wide berth, especially the elderly when coming past. They cannot always hear you, and you have no right to expect them to move off the path just because you are riding at 25 km /h
  20. Cool heads, cool heads. porky. That is the way to go. Unfortunately for all of us, there are many groups ride who sometimes ride like this. Mostly this kind of thing only happens now and again, even in the most disciplined bunches, but when a particular group does this regularly, and then resorts to insults etc when their behaviour is brought to their attention, well every action has a consequence. We should try and self regulate where possible, but after a while that is not enough. Does any one have the club name?
  21. Ready or not, this is my favourite race, and so I WILL be doing it again. I usually book accom for a bunch of people and as not everyone always can make it, I sometimes have spare rooms/beds. Give me a pm if you are struggling to find something.
