  1. So what's the story.... what do you have to do to get into the ABSA VIP tent / become an ABSA rider?
  2. Having serious envy during the race for the fancy treatment the guys received in the ABSA VIP tents… whats the trick, how does one get in on that action?

    Logistics Help

I want to enter the upcoming Cape Pioneer Trek but have some logistical challenges - hoping that someone here has been through this before and can give some guidance (I have mailed Dryland a set of questions with no response - so hopefully someone here can help....) With no flights or direct bike transport from King Shaka to George, I'll have to fly via King Shaka to JHB to George, this somewhat complicates things I'll be flying my bike in a bike bag, will the shuttle service be able to take my bike also? I assume that if they do, they will also transport my bike bag to the finish and then back to the airport again? with the shuttle service running the day before and the day after the event also, does that mean the tented accommodation will be available those days also? For anyone that has done this race before on their own - any comments or recommendations on the logistics? what worked well? What didn't? Would love to do it but so far just getting there and back feels like a bigger challenge than the actual event.
  4. I'm getting a bit gatvol of the cradle and want to wander out to a different route for a change of scenery. Never been to Suikerbosrand and would love to give the hills a go. How does it work out there- rock up and ride? Is it safe to ride alone? Anything special to know? and also.... How do I get there from Fourways? Thanks. Any other good sugestions of alternative routes in GP would also be welcomed.

    IM Zurich

Awesome! After not being able to get an entry for Challenge Roth I settles for IM Zurich so will see you there. The wife is also doing the 5150 the day before so its going to be a great weekend all round. Switzerland is super expensive and the exchange rate is not helping - start saving now!
  6. According to my Garmin: - Distance: 86.64km - Elevation gain: 892m with elevation correction; 1207m without elevation correction (whatever that means)
  7. I think the bike course is easier than EL (~10mins quicker). I did however find that it was more difficult to pace yourself on the Midlands bike due to the many smaller ups and downs. You could have easily overcooked things to end up with no legs on what was also a not so flat run course
  8. It was a really good race and apart from the bit of rain I had on the last loop of the bike course, perfect triathlon weather. The only improvement like everyone else said - the traffic on the bike course was really bad. Had a few very close calls with frustrated/incompetent drivers with no regard for cyclist on the road.
  9. If you think that pedigree is impressive, have a look at what Cervelo (especially the P3) has done over the past few years....
  10. I wouldnt touch the Argon with a 10ft pole. Went all out and got an E118 a year ago and had so many issue with the bike (slipping seatpost, swiveling base bar, drop outs on the forks being skew etc etc) I took it back for a full refund. Check out the new Cervelo P2s, they are also in that price bracket and you cant go wrong with them.
  11. They dont make Cervelo's in red so this cant be true....
  12. If you ride a Cervelo I have a dual bottle cage X-Lab setup we can chat about that came of my old P3.
  13. I hope I have better luck with this one than I had with trying to get an Epic entry this year....
  14. I'm not so sure about a one piece for Ironman, 70.3 it might work lekker.
  15. So if you run by pace, what about hills? Surely it takes more power running up a hill at 5min/km than running down hille at the same pace?
  16. Coach explained it as cardiac drift - also said that is the benefit of power based training where you can keep a constant power output regardless of what your HR does. She recons it is still considered base training. So if you have cardiac drift in cycling, you will surely have it during running as well, which doesnt say much for HR based run training? or am I missing the point?
  17. Z2 training is at 150w - 180w. FTP based on lactate testing and not the normal 20min all out effort is at 220w. On the program provided, I also have HR values along with the power values to indicate training zones. For Z2, HR should be between 109 - 129 bpm, I end up seeing HR values between 145 - 155bpm 30 - 45 min into a sesison of keeping NP at around 175w. Outcome of the lactate testing did show that I have high LT and Fatigue resistance but not much in terms of base fitness - could this explain it? And then again - would I be building base at these high HR values althoug it is at low power output?
  18. I recently started with a power based training program. As per normal, the first phase is base building, so long slow type of rides/runs. During the base phase, coach said it is important to keep HR within Z2 (very low HR) for the run training and in Z2 (power based, also low) for the bike. What I found happening on the bike is that my HR starts out good while keeping it in the dedicated power zone but the gradually rises to almost 80 - 90% of max an hour or so into the ride and then stabalises there. So my question is - if base building is done wat a low HR (zone 2 in this case), would it still be classified as base building on the bike if I keep it in power zone 2 but my heart rate rises so much during the workout?
  19. with swimming 10km per week behind you there should be no issues swimming 1km open water.
  20. I had to have my gal bladder removed yesterday and was wondering how long it took you to get back on the bike after the same op. it was done laproscopicly so at least i'm not cut open from top to bottom. Doc said 3 to 6 weeks wich has to much variance in it for my liking....
  21. So I'm about to drop R50k on an Argon 18 E-118 with SRMA Red and just want to check in with anybody that have one of these before I take the final plunge. If you have one: - Are you happy with it? - How easy is the bike to live with? - How durable is it? i.e is is flimsy and has anything broken? - Do you have the issues with the basebar/Areobars as described all over the internet? - Anything else that I should know about this bike before spending this amount of money? If the Argon turns out to be a no-go because of whatever issues I'll settle for the tried and tested P3 - any advise on P3 vs Argon vs any other alternative I miss?
  22. With all the tri bikes out in the cradle over weekends - what are you guys training for? Is there an upcomming tri I dont know about...? Surely not everybody out can be training for an upcomming international event nor can I imagine that you start training for 70.3 or IMSA just yet?

    2012 Ironman

I've tested my 910XT on my wrist with open water swimming a few times and it is pretty accurate. Also measured my IM swim at 4.7km. If you look at the photos of the swim it is easy to see how you can swim an additional 1km. It will probably be exactly 3.8km when to take the shortes distance from buoy to buoy.
  24. The E118 is becoming more and more of a good option. The one thing the Cervelo has on it though is the lifetime waranty on the frame as opposed to the three year waranty on the others....
  25. At about R90k the P5 is going to be above most weekend warriors' budget....
