  1. Wow I really wasn't looking for donations but I should have known the Hub crowd are always generous especially when it comes to animals. Please see the post by Little Fish with the bank details from our Facebook post. Thank you so much from me, Apollo and Zeus. I will keep you updated with their progress.
  2. Not cheap unfortunately, as they need lens replacements as well we are looking at R20k each.
  3. We rescued these two three year old brothers from a very neglected state last week, imagine our surprise when we let them out in the run and they ran smack into the fence and were falling in holes. It turns out they are totally blind at three years old. Their so called owner didn't even know they were blind The place they were kept also had a male and female Boerbull, none are sterilised and the female was on heat so you can imagine the trauma these boys went through with the Boerbull wanting to fight them all the time and they couldn't see. We took them to the eye specialist today and the problem is hereditary cataracts probably caused by inbreeding. We are trying to raise enough money to get the operation done to restore their sight and then will be looking for homes for them. They have never known a car, collar and leash or any affection but are responding well and have lots of love to give. They are a real handful at the moment being very confused, scared and blind, if we separate them by even a few metres they start crying for each other.
  4. Sorry to hear that, there are lot's of supplements which can delay the onset of joint issues and have you looked into physio?
  5. Is she getting sufficient stimulation? It is normally boredom that makes dogs dig and be destructive. Does she have toys and play with the others or is she a bit of an outsider? I can probably put you in touch with a behaviourist if you want a professional opinion, what area are you in?
  6. Not mine but one of the dogs flown up by Husky Rescue from a high risk shelter in the Eastern Cape. Posting because she is absolutely stunning and a lovely nature to match. She is the 6th we have flown up since December and was surrendered because "She keeps getting out"
  7. Hope you don't mind but I have stolen this pic and shared on Facebook. Nature is amazing.
  8. Try posting in this group, Adopted Animals Transport Network. https://www.facebook.com/groups/306172466198260/
  9. Love the cats and Molly is a cool looking girl too. Doesn't really matter which room except no other animals to keep excitement low and try one cat at a time.
  10. Some basic pointers. Must use a harness and leash to control her. Take her into a room with no other dogs. Once she is calm get someone to bring in the cat and preferably sit with the cat on their lap. Judge her excitement level and if it is more excitement than psychotic killing instinct then once she is calm allow her to approach the cat but controlling using the leash. Try to keep control at all times but if possible the leash should not be too tight as this creates more tension. The person holding the cat should keep stroking her to keep her calm but if the cat is not comfortable let her go and try again later. Let the dog approach the cat as close as possible but keep away from biting distance, once she has smelt the cat take her away a bit, let her calm down and then approach again. You may need to do this quite a few times and over a few days until the dog realises the cat is not a snack or toy and will lose interest. Never assume that all is ok until you are absolutely sure and if you are leaving them alone make sure the cat has escape routes such as open windows, security gates or high furniture she can jump on. The main thing to see is her reaction, you should be able to see if it is just curiosity or a mad rage, if she settles down after a few minutes you will probably be ok. Don't forget to reward her with treats if she is good with the cat and leaves her so she associates leaving the cat alone with being rewarded. Let me know if you need help.
  11. Drop me a mail to ian@huskyrescue.co.za and I will give you some assistance.
  12. Apologies if I am hijacking the thread but it is something I am passionate about and in a way I do see them all as "My Pets".
  13. Ok one last one, this video was also made last year, some of the dogs featured are still waiting at Husky Rescue for a chance of a forever home. Some tragically passed away with the bee attack last year but many have also found loving homes.
  14. You want more tears? Watch these, made specially for Emily and her story last year.
  15. Very true, more sensitive and in tune than we realise.
  16. On a similar note to what I said above, we had the most amazing experience at the Rand Show last year. Emily was there at the Husky Rescue stand and all of a sudden started pulling to get to this one guy who was approaching the stand. It was almost as if she knew him or felt some kind of link. The immediate bond was so powerful and emotional that it took all of us by surprise, Emily just wanted to hug this guy and he was eventually in tears with the emotion. Unfortunately he left before I could get any details, so I don't know if there could have been some link to her past life. Here are some pics.
  17. Fantastic, as you know I am heavily involved with Husky Rescue so come across these kind of cases all the time. I am a firm believer that certain dogs and humans are destined to meet, he was just waiting for the one he trusted to come along. I recently rescued a dog from Heidelberg that had been abandoned when his owner moved out. It took me two hours just to catch him he was so mistrusting, I even had to get the help of the SPCA to corner him. Once I had him though, it only took 5 minutes of bonding to convince him I was there to help and he let me pick him up and put him in the car. He is now living in the most fantastic home in Edenvale with a Lab playmate and living a life of real luxury.
  18. As you know huskies are notoriously bad with cats but I have successfully integrated our 3 with Cleo the cat so I am usually the one designated to perform the "Cat Scan" as we call it for Husky Rescue. It has to be done very carefully and controlled but so far no mishaps.
  19. Can you believe that it is nearly a year since we found Emily in such a shocking state. Here are some recent pics of her waiting for food in the kitchen and then trying to entice the birds to come down out of the trees to play with her. For those who may have not seen her story last year this is what she looked like when found, it was due to the generosity of many people including quite a few Hubbers that Husky Rescue were able to give her the medical care she needed to pull through. She and the rest of my pack of huskies have truly changed my life in so many ways.
  20. Some recent Emily pics for those that have been following her story. Emily was given a new toy as a gift by a fan, she loves all her toys. She is now strong enough to do some proper dry land sledding and showing great promise for next years season. Showing her cheeky side about to pounce on her big sister, Queen Tequila. And here is the Queen herself.
  21. What else do you expect?
  22. They don't necessarily need a huge yard, as long as you are prepared to take them out regularly for exercise and they have some company (human or dog) while you are out during the day. There are people in Singapore that have huskies in apartments but they take them out twice a day for walks and runs. See www.huskyrescue.co.za for more info on the pros and cons of the breed.
  23. You would have to travel a long way to visit that husky, she is the marketing lady from Montego and based in Graaff Reinet.
  24. For those wonderful supporters that voted for Emily in the recent Montego Heroic Tails competition, today was the prize giving held at Husky Rescue near Lanseria. Emily not only won her category but was also the overall winner. Her prize consisted of a years supply of Montego food and cash, both of these are being donated by Emily to Husky Rescue to help out the other huskies still needing assistance.
