  8. It could also be cause and or be worsened by inadequate foot support. Remember our lower extremities are not really designed for cycling, but for efficient walking/ running. So the correct shoes with adequate support is essential. But cleat position, saddle height and the amount of flex in your shoes (the stiffer, the better) can also be factors in causing more discomfort. Have a look HERE, but you are more than welcome just to come in and have a chat with me.
  9. Hi lerouc Yes it is called hotspots, but it is not caused by saddle height at all. What causes the problem is your longitudinal arch of your foot elongating in the shoe. This is completely normal as it is part of the normal walking/ running action. Now most of your feet's nerves and arteries runs through your tarsal and metatarsals (foot bones), but the problem is with cycling is that your feet are static in the shoe. Now with this elongation it cuts off blood supply and irritates the nerves. That is what causes hotfoot. How to solve the problem...First you need to make sure your shoes are the correct size and not too tight fitting, secondly you need to get to a Specialized dealer and speak to a Bodygeometry Fit Technician. They will definitely be able to assist you. What the do is analyse your specific foot structure and from that the recommend the correct foot support. The foot support helps your feet to relax in your shoes, promotes blood flow and also relieves pressure off your nerves running through your feet and therefore preventing hotfoot completely.

  11. I use the old Pretoria road all the way to Corlett. The first 2km is a bit dodge, but haven't had anything that made me uneasy, and the best p[art is just after Midrand (in your case) there is a realy awsome jeeptrack on the far lefthand side.
  12. I work in Melrose Arch, recently started commuting from Centurion to work. Good training 36km with 700m ascent, coming back is downhill though.
  13. No I wasn't I was trained in SA by Tigran Korkotyan, he is a EMEA SBCU Professor. He come from Morgan Hill though.
  14. Good question! I was trained by Specialized (SBCU/ Specialized Bicycle Component University) together with the Boulder Institute For Sport Medicine. The lead researcher is Dr. Andy Pruitt and I'm one of only a few qualified BG FIT Technicians in the country. I do not work with Mark Williams, I work from my own facility and I can come to you, at your convenience.
  15. Looks decent, just a few questions. Where did he get trained and where did he study to be able to set you up, is it based on certain scientific setup protocol, just rule of thumb or his personal view of how things should be? I'm not saying anything bad about him and I'm sure he is really good at what he does, but is it the BEST? That is my concern. Ergo fit is really good if you are an average human being... I say again the BEST setup is the one that is based on you specific biometric data and then customized to your current state of fitness and level of riding. So yes it should be Dynamic (well done ERGOFIT) but Its not dynamic or biometric data on it's own that makes the difference, it's the combination of everything and how the Technician interprets and implements that data for you.
  16. It is a lot of money, BUT I do a complete body analysis and use that data to fully customize you personal setup, as it should be. Also keep in mind you pay for + /- 3hours of fine tuning and getting you setup perfect. You are more than welcome to search my profile an get a few testimonials. I will not stop until it is perfect. And I will switch my phone off

  22. Here is a video explaining why we need foot support and where it is important to put it. Remember I'm NOT trying to sell anything just want to emphasize a point. Also very often your forefoot angle differs from left to right (although no necessarily in your case). If you for instance have a significant varus/ very acute forefoot angle left and only mild varus/ small forefoot angle right you would need more support left that right. If you use cleat wedges instead of in-shoe wedges your cleat stack left would be far greater than right. In result you will force a leg length discrepancy which comes with its own set of pain and inefficiencies.
  23. Also keep in mind the shape of the saddle, you get two main designs. 1) Dome top design: most Italian saddles are dome top, the idea was to spread the load and therefore lessen the pressure. 2) Flat top design, Specialized started with and did most of the research on this design. They said you don't want any pressure at all and as much blood flow as possible. With the dome top design you only sit on your ischial tuberosities/ sitbones and results in 90% more blood flow than with a dometop design! Also it is imperitive to measure your sitbone width to get the right saddle width for wrong saddle width makes things worse and cause it's own problems! I can help you with that if interested and you're JHB/PTA area.
  24. The idea behind a good woman specific bicycle is that if you take an average girl and an average guy that is the same height you will find that the girl has longer legs (the difference is in her longer femur) and a shorter torso. So on an average bicycle she would most probably overstretch and be uncomfortable. So with woman specific design bicycles are designed with shorter top tubes and a longer head tube. Here is the exception to the rule (as there will always be) because you can't generalize people. So at the end of the day this will be the best option, explain to her the benefits of going for a women specific design bike and then let her choose. Because even if she does not decide to go for the women specific design bike I can still set her up on any bike (just make sure it is the right size) and she will be comfortable. Remember you can always change the stem and saddle and that also will make a huge difference!
  25. I will recommend forefoot wedges rather than cleat wedges. Cleat wedges angles your whole foot where you actually only need forefoot and arch support (metatarsal support also, but that's different kind of support). You still want your feet to be as close to it's natural position. Remember that it is always best to fit you bike to your body and not your body to your bike. If you want more info I'm happy to forward you some!
