  1. Had a great time! Best part was spending time with great mate! Thanks budy! My wife also told me about fist fight, commissar was rather upset just before she started. My only gripe : the cameraman on the quads, can you not wear a helmet? Driver and guy with the tripod. Trying to teach a 5 year old to wear a helmet and you play kamakazi does not help!
  2. That is the MET.(Metropolitan museum of art)
  3. Agree, I am that guy who refuse to ride with my sister in law's little ones if they don't weaR helmets, and it usually ends in tears and the parents being mad at me. They also don't believe in buckling up for short trips, but they know the rules in my car, so he reprimanded his dad the other day, "oom Chris ry nie as ons nie vas is nie" It is there for a reason, just wear it.
  4. Interesting read: http://news.sky.com/story/1272768/cyclists-who-wear-helmets-wasting-their-time

  13. Not to hi-jack but a question: I took a tumble near breeds nek this weekend, and broke my rear wheel. Now I need to suck it up and buy or build a new one. What would you suggest? Weight 95kg, DS, 26" and mostly enjoy long slow rides and Sani each year. Any ideas on rims and so? Thanks

  18. Please don't tell anybody about this , then me and the misses can enjoy the views of Pretoria on our own every afternoon, maybe take a bottle of champagne, blanket ..... Went there for a quick detour, and what nice trails. Not too technical, and not too steep. Well worth the time. Can't wait for the entire trail to open, will become a friend this week.
  19. During Marshall law in the Cape Colony, people had to hand in their Bicycles, as not to help the Boers. Here is one of those places.
  20. OK here is the story: The first Bicycle to be used in a war was during the Spanish War of 1898, when Lt James A Moss of the US Army, had to rush a 100 black cyclist to help control a riot in Havana Cuba. After the report of this reached South Africa, Danie Theron and a friend of his, Koos Jooste, met the Transvaal Government to try and persuade them to start a cycling corps. Pres Kruger and Commandant-General Piet Joubert had a interview with the two men, their main point was a horse needs to drink, eat and sleep, while with a bike all you need is a pump and some oil. The General jocularly said and it does not even bite or kick. Jooste showed them that to avoid punctures he used a piece of untanned leather; this was one of the areas the British struggled tremendously, as the thorny bush did not help them at all. Pres Kruger said he will only believe it if they had a race. So Jooste raced a “Martiens” tot the Crocodile river and Jooste won. Theron was instructed to start a new corps. “Wielrijders Rapportgangers Korps” The confusion regarding the Jameson raid was that Danie Theron was part of the party to arrest the Jameson Raid. There is a book written regarding the use of cycles in the Boer war, Bicycles during the Boer war, 1899-1902 / by D.R. Maree. Publisher Johannesburg : South African National Museum of Military History, 1977
  21. Hi, Danie Theron begged a General to allow bikes to ride dispatches, and he had to set up a race between a horse and bike, so he got the ZAR champ at that point to ride to a certain bridge to fetch a note aand back. I will get all the names of everybody when im back in the office to go over some notes of mine. The bike won by around 45min, this was in 1896, just after he attacked a journalist because he wrote bad things about the Afrikaner, So Danie Theron started the Rapport reiers, this is where the organization "Rapport reiers" heeds from, the Theron's Verkenners korps, was a unit he set up with gen. De Wet, 1900' they started of as purely recon but later developed into small raiding partys, the british hated them. Will give more details on everything sometime tommorow.
