  1. No riding in Durban today until the sun goes down, unless you have some sort of death wish. It is cooking out there. Car said 32 down at the beach front and hit 35 as we drove up Field's Hill.
  2. But the road verges are brown too. In saying that it is a cool picture though. The other cyclist in the frame adds interest.
  3. That is true but it does not change the question, in fact it means there should even be a few exclamation marks after it. But then again I suppose I am just spoilt as there is nothing like the green rolling hills of KZN...
  4. Wow, can't believe it is still so brown there. Have you guys not had any rain?
  5. Seems like those in the Western Cape could do with some computer training! So come on, Top Fuel, tell us what he posted in error the first time up? I hope he shares some Western Cape photos during winter... it's stunning there that time of the year.
  6. Because they don't have two bikes and they wish to get in some distance training that they can't at their local trails? To all: Do these numbers differ dramatically if you are using tubes?
  7. Is that an actual trail though or did they just get themselves into those positions for a photoshoot?
  8. Wait until you get called uncle! And then there are the old fogey favourites of deary and sweety
  9. I haven't read this entire thread but it is probably the context in which it is being used. If someone is clearly not your buddy and you refer to them as such in conversation it comes across in a derogatory manner.
  10. Maybe I am a major sceptic but operating on a hotmail account and selling second hand bikes sounds dodge to me.
  11. It's been just over a month now and only around 300km of single track trail riding at Giba but I have not had any issues. I did get the real wheel trued a week or so back but that is the norm (as far as I understand) when a bike is ridden for the first time. But in saying this I am only 77kg and do not take 5m drop offs nor do jumps. The forks are usually Suntour or Rokshox, which are on many other bikes, so sounds distinctly like sales talk to me. Obviously in this price range they are not top of the range forks but that is to be expected. I got my Phoenix with Deore components, SLX rear derailleur, Shimano hydraulic disks, Suntour air shock (which is probably my least favourite component) for R4,500.
  12. Buy a handle bar mount and mount your phone there.
  13. These two posts pretty much cover where I ended up when looking for a new bike for under R5k... I checked out the 2nd hand side but got a little frustrated trying to find what I wanted, in the size I wanted, and still in good condition, for the price I wanted. I then had a mate point out the Titan range and I was almost sold until I spotted the Silverback range and ended up getting better components at a lower price. This was for the exact reason pointed out by SBman, I bought a 2011 model as part of a stock clearance. Not sure there will still be many like that around still though so late in the year. Most have already cleared stock. I was not caught up in the whole 29er hype as it often meant about R1k more just for the bigger wheels because it is a new fad.
  14. What is your average in Giba itself? Although I presume this would not be so easy to provide as it is included in your whole workout. I know a lot of people ride in from Waterfall etc and I'd assume your speeds along the roads in would obviously be a lot higher, as mentioned by you.
  15. Got to admire the scenery and take photos to share with those not privileged enough to experience it first hand And wee.....
  16. The difference between the two seems to stem from Strava only including "time moving" whereas I have Endomondo include the breaks too. I hear a lot of people use autopause but in my opinion this is cheating because if you are having regular breaks this should be included in your time.
  17. Ha ha I just transferred my ride from yesterday (for which I'd mentioned an average speed of 10.9km/h) from Endomondo into Strava (based on advice above) and the latter now reflects my average speed as 12.1 km/h! No wonder you guys all apparently ride faster than me! Your iPhones and Androids probably add a few km/h
  18. That does help, thanks! Just nice to get an idea from others. The other day I did the blue route at Giba, lots of climbing, at an average 9.5km/h. Did orange and green today and averaged 10.9km/h so was just interested in how that compares. I know I don't smoke the downhill sections so this affects my average quite dramatically. Full suspension and big balls would probably up my average a little by keeping those fingers off the brakes on the way down. No doubt by mentioning our pace we do open ourselves up for ridicule from those who are faster but then they perhaps cannot match us in other disciplines
  19. Now I realise the terrain will play a major part in this but what sort of average speed (km/h) are you guys riding at off road. I am specifically interested in the pace of guys riding at Giba Gorge but all offroad MTB speeds will be welcomed but perhaps mention terrain. If you have done Giba and Holla a comparison between the two would be cool (although again I realise it depends which route you did at each). The reason this is being asked is that someone joked about whether I was walking when seeing my average speed (km/h) for the blue route at Giba. A quick online check of others who had posted their Giba routes showed that my speed was about right (if not compared to Burry and co, or the racing snakes, obviously ). Obviously it does not really concern me what others think about my pace as it is more about enjoyment for me but it would still be nice to see how it compares. Cheers
  20. Based on that bold sentence, we are all victims of this crime then as insurance premiums are based on actuarial analysis of the risk involved. Every time there is a theft of any sort it will affect the premiums that we all pay.
  21. Some of these posts make me realise the biggest issue with most relationships... lack of communication! Instead of asking other men on here for advice why not sit and chat to your wife/partner and find out how she would prefer you to approach your rides with her.
  22. Yes
  23. Unfortunately a really pitiful turnout by the Durban folk but a stunning morning for a beach front cycle!
