  1. I almost never buy anything (edit:expensive) without at least checking with Westdene Cycles. They usually give you a great quote off the phone. Even if you end up buying from your LBS, at least you know how much extra you're paying for the convenience. 011 477 5719
  2. Pricy, but you might just want to test the 29er Spec Stumpjumper. http://www.specialized.com/za/en/bikes/mountain/stumpjumperfsr
  3. TBH, I was looking that they have Bruyneel and actually he's brilliant, so I take that back. But I've never looked at what Contador has done and thought "why, why why you fool" like I have with the Schlecks, so very often. For example, when Frank is ahead, Andy should at least be making a show of supporting him. That raises the chance that one of them will do well, instead of showing so obviously that Andy is your only chance at success. With the latter, your competitors have one less worry. The amount of times the Schlecks wasted energy with Contador right behind them. That's idiotic, because he's generally very strong. Let him do that, especially when you have any time in reserve. Attack him only when he's attacked you a few times in a row. The Schlecks are quite capable of getting onto the podium, but I'm pretty sure they consider that a failure. They're going there to win it. If you don't have the absolute sheer strength of e.g. Contador, you need to make it up by using what you have cleverly. They have often not done that. /signing off, armchair TDFer who likely couldn't catch Schleck's granny on a downhill
  4. If so, the Schecks are going to need a better strategist. They have absolutely no brains.
  5. Did a Google search and another link on the hub came up: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/113810-too-good-to-be-true/page__st__16 Search: https://www.google.co.za/search?q=%22unilateralcycling%40hotmail.com%22+%7C+%22unilateralcyclingltd%40hotmail.com%22 - you'll see he has multiple ads up For many of the ads you have to use the cached version on the RHS, because the original has gone. You can see his phone number in a few of them.
  6. Hunting panda bears for their noses will sort the Chinese perspective out pronto.
  7. That's interesting. Howcome?
  8. Perfect is the enemy of good enough. You can do a lot to reduce your impact without either sitting in a cave eating fruit that fell off a tree, or just throwing your hands up and saying "anything goes". Very interesting graphic, though - it's very hard to gauge whether something is has a net benefit or not!
  9. It also sh1ts on our atmosphere and land resources. When the Chinese make enough money to eat meat (which they traditionally haven't been able to afford that much), we'll have another 1.5 or so billion people who need cows to eat, so this issue is just getting started.

    Rift Valley Oddysey

Update: I mailed them and pricing is approoooximately R1500 for the entry (give or take a few minor adjustments). They're working on getting flight discounts. Obviously have to buy/borrow/rent a Garmin, excellent opportunity to upgrade the bike.
  11. http://www.riftvalleyodyssey.com/ Was originally sent to me by the Sani2c newsletter. This year it's 14-16 Sept through Kenya with a voluntary trip past the wildebeest migration afterwards. "The Rift Valley Odyssey is Kenya’s premier GPS mountain bike race; crossing diverse scenery at high altitude between Limuru, Naivasha and the Mau Escarpment. The RVO traverses both eastern and western escarpments of the Great Rift Valley, riding challenging terrain from technical single-track forest trails, exhilarating descents, arduous ascents (peak altitude 2900m), pristine wilderness areas, open savannah teaming with wild game." Anyone done it? What's not to like? Am very keen to register for it, will try drag a few mates along.
  12. IIRC you've just started working, so the price might seem quite expensive now but hopefully will seem cheaper once you have some cash coming in. For most people it's the same price or less than a movie and popcorn, and I'd rather be riding. Also, they'll add season tickets at some point, which will help if it's a local ride. For me, I'd rather use it than the Bryanston bike park. I ride there maybe once a year and it's 50 bucks to go around in small circles that are either too easy or too hard/dangerous. Modderfontein will improve, they have tons of space to work with, and the money we're paying will help make it better. I'm likely to use it at least once a month.
  13. Disagree. It highlights that there are a minority who do what they like and the rest of us are branded as a result. We can't change the obvious jerks so all that's available is for the more reasonable riders to try tone down how they ride around dogs/kids. I always slow down, always greet the dog owner, partly because I know they might be a bit touchy about riders speeding past. I love caning it down the tree-lined track, but it's not hard to slow down for a few seconds and then speed up again. One note - while the focus of the OP is on the cons of having riders, I'd like to highlight the pros. All types of traffic reduce the likelihood of mugging. Cyclists possibly more so, because they move faster and cover more ground than pedestrians, so you'll often be passed by many on a walk. In fact, to the OP, we're more likely to be a target because we're riding desirable bikes. So let's try have pedestrians and riders on the same team, and the crooks on the other.
  14. Thank you for doing all the work. Hope the recipients appreciate it!
  15. I wouldn't worry about the sound being recorded - it'll be a tiny part of the recording size. Think of the size of an MP3 album compared to a movie in HD, so e.g. 100MB on a 10GB file. Pretty much insignificant.
  16. I think there are a couple of different issues people have. The rattle in my situation seems to be inside the actual camera unit, i.e. when it's outside of the case and being held in my hand.
  17. Start to Google "gopro rattle" and it'll offer the helpful suffix "fix", so you know it's not a once-off issue. So Googling "gopro rattle fix" and you get things like this: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f429/gopro-2-internal-rattle-fix-101001/ Seriously? I have to do that? I imagine the warranty goes to hell if I do. Surprising, because one would imagine the de-facto lets-be-a-hero camera wouldn't have a systemic problem with rattling after, say, the first version. Here's hoping only 50% of them have that noise and I can return this one since I only got it a few weeks ago. If not, that's very uncool.
  18. Have y'all noticed a clicking or knocking sound when playing back? The door rubber seems to push quite hard against the unit so I'd imagine it's reasonably solidly supported, but it still sounds like its knocking around a bit. If so, how have you reduced that? Edit: it seems to be in the unit itself. I took it out of the casing now, shook it and there's an audible noise. I did some searches and you can find reports of it online, although no idea whether it's all of them or just some.
  19. Awesome. The 720@50 only offers "wide", so how do you align the camera optimally to get the best view? Also, how do you keep the same angle between rides, because you can't see where it's pointing unless you buy the rear screen thingy, and there aren't any guides on the device to say e.g. 30 degrees? Do you just learn after using it a lot?
  20. Might be just practice, or faster terrain. I'll take it to Clarens this weekend and see what I get.
  21. Or a cat, if you have a big one. Climbing on the roof, attacking the neighbours, sh*gging the kitty next door. Cats live in 3D, dogs in 2D since they just scuffle along the ground
  22. What attachments are you guys using? I find the handlebar too nausea-inducing. Handlebar moves too much compared to the rest of the bike. Helmet sucks because you never see the proper height of jumps - Patches can do cool slowmo killer jumps and it looks like he's rolling along on the lawn. Chest is ok if I make it very tight (otherwise bounces everywhere), but I have to reduce the POV otherwise I get my face (edit: and arms - very distracting seeing parts of the rider). Maybe I could point it more down - just have to get the angle right. But it's a bit sucky when all you see is the ground - want to keep telling the camera dude to pick it up a bit. I had a good result with it pointing backwards from the seatpost. Element of surprise because you don't see what's coming until it has. Can't do a whole video like that though. I'd like to try the roll-cage attachment and put it on thicker parts of my bike. Less left-right movement, better idea of the terrain and sometimes it's nice seeing the suspension working.
  23. Something like this, but with more tread on the tyres? http://media-1.web.britannica.com/eb-media/88/6488-004-96D89FFF.jpg
  24. That's where our experiences will differ tremendously I haven't been that weight since std 7! I'll generally go for stuff that's stronger over weight but only because I'm heavier and I'd rather avoid the hassle of having to true wheels, and I'm nowhere near the front of the peloton. Edit: although if you're going to save weight anywhere, the wheels are it. Rest of the bike not nearly as important.
  25. Some (=many) seem to think the Crests are a bit too lightweight and lack strength. http://www.mtbr.com/cat/tires-and-wheels/rim/notubes-com/ztr-crest-29er/prd_450551_139crx.aspx
