  2. You can make up the powder yourself - 50/50 bicarb and salt - cheap as chips. It's the bottle that makes life easy.
  3. Much easier just to buy a FLO nasal douche bottle from dischem or clicks.... YouTube has instructions. We have been adding some specific meds to these to treat some nasal conditions - works pretty well.

  6. Probably not ok for some people - but the level it affects individuals might vary. It's really hard to say with any accuracy - all I will say is that my sister in law has a patient that passed away after 2 and some alcohol the night before (perhaps a fair amount) - at least we think it was 2 based on what was taken out of the blister pack when he was found, but he didn't survive total kidney failure - perhaps if he had been found 2 hours earlier interventions would have been more effective than they were. My professional opinion is that they should not be taken at all - before, during or after an endurance event, and I see no reason to change that.

  9. Nope - we are all friends here See Hacc's post above.... and trust me - Dialysis is a life sentence... only way to get out of it is a kidney transplant.... and that's only temporary. Personally I think they should drug test ALL comrades runners for nsaids and ban them from future runs if they test positive..... and just add the cost of the test to the entrance fee - in the interests of the runner.

They can lead to other metabolic issues because you can get your electrolyte levels out of whack quite easily - especially if taken to excess - which some people do - it's kind of complicated to explain without a background in physiology, and a ton of typing from my side, - that said.... The stretch will help, and she might well be fine to run - I have given the same advice to many athletes - some have been about to bail on the next day because of it - and managed to finish (carbon29er will bear me out on this because I showed one of his clients who was hobbling around and packing up mid epic a couple of years ago)

I did read what you said (some of it in arrears) - your advice is still terribly dangerous (even with disclaimers) The only way to assess what they can or cannot take is to test renal function... period. This has some practical implications, and to do a proper job you would have to test at various environmental conditions and dehydration levels over extended periods - nobody is going to do that properly because you would have to create rhabdomyelisis (muscle stiffness/damage) for each test to properly check kidney function and the affect of this added to the NSAID reduction in kidney performance. I have friends who can introduce you the the relatives of patients that have had kidney failure from NSAID use... even without endurance exercise being involved.... Still - just stay out of my ER.... don't want friends there for any reason.
  13. 1 - Yes 2 - she should stop now and deal with the problem - NSAIDS just mask the pain - don't actually do anything for it, except let you make the problem worse. I always recommend a stretch for ITB - I have posted it here somewhere - you can search for it. Only thing (apart from surgery) that I KNOW works - both from colleagues, personal experience and patients - if it doesn't work, then surgery combined with the stretch works. It's a long time since I was at varsity - but most runners that suffer from ITB seem to be supinators, and often (unfortunately) wear shoes suitable for pronators, rather than for supinators - this does seem to exacerbate the incidence of ITB (to paraphrase TD Noakes) So - Rest, Ice, Stretch, Shoes are on my list of things you should look at. And get her off those NSAIDS - they are not helping.
  14. Massage using the outlet pipe of a pool when the pump is running.... twice a day for 10 min. Just sit on the side of the pool and put your foot/heel in - hold it in the stream and move it around gently within your pain threshold - closer will create higher pressure. This will save you plenty on physio fees.

Cataflam is probably worse than Myprodol - every athletic kidney problem I have helped with has been Voltaren or Cataflam (essentially the same thing) - but all NSAIDS are in the same boat to a greater or lesser degree. DO NOT TAKE them is the basic rule for endurance events. Myprodol is a codeine/ibuprofen mix - neither of which are recommended for use in patients with renal impairment at any time - ibuprofen can by it's very mechanism constrict the renal arteries (amongst other side effects) and this is definitely a no no for endurance events - Voltaren does the same thing and is definitely the biggest killer at comrades - google will find you plenty of papers on this.
  16. Terrible advice - never ever take NSAIDS immediately before, during or after any endurance activity. The effect on Renal (kidney) function can be extreme, and life threatening, especially when associated with even mild dehydration. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4034033/ Permanent kidney damage is NOT what you want - ever. The third way is DO NOT TAKE ANY MEDICATION AT ALL during the race, especially anti-inflammatories [e.g. Voltaren, Cataflam, etc]. This also includes other pain killers and supplements for cramp etc. There are increasing numbers of runners developing renal failure after Comrades, and one of the major contributing factors to this trend is the taking of anti-inflammatories during the race. Renal Failure is a serious condition and can be fatal.
  17. Depends on if the oozing is infection related or not. Disinfect it a lot as a precaution. If the surrounding skin is hot and if you have swollen lymph nodes in the area then head immediately to your doctor.
  18. It's ok for brew and French press- doesn't do that well-for espresso that requires fine grinding - it can get in the espresso range but occasionally can't get fine enough- my race partner has one he uses with a la pavoni pro lever.
  19. Use a mould resistant sealant - they are specifically marked - for bathroom use - some are acryilc based and some are silicon based - doesn't matter as long as it is mould resistant.
  20. Q1 - already answered Q2 - Seal the gaps - easy and quick but expensive - spray foam - cheap but time consuming - plaster.... Q3 - Plaster repair - do it at the same time as Q2 (get a good plasterer) Q4 - Get some citric acid powder and a white scrubby - mix up the citric acid in hot water and apply with the scrubby repeatedly - you can test this initially with lemon juice concentrate to see if it will work - but citric acid powder is much cheaper (don't be in a hurry - it has to dissolve calcium deposits that are mixed with soap residue) - you might also want to protect the floor from splashes and drips - some tiles and grouts mark fairly easily.
