    I rode a Specialized frame like that with similar cracks for 3 years after it had been replaced under warranty (back when I worked at Specialized)... They are definitely paint cracks, Perhaps Specialized will warranty it under their 2 year paint warranty but considering its a 2012 model they may not....Depends on date of actual purchase.

    These are rubbish IMHO, they are using wind speed and accelerometers as a calculation so if you do a session indoors then it doesn't have anything to factor in...unless you get the indoor package upgrade...? Rather get a PowerTap POwerCal heart rate strap, still not 100% accurate but certainly a LOT more accurate than the ibike thing...I have had results within 3% compared to a direct measurement hub system on averages.

    Guys have been doing this or similar for years! My one mate lost a bike like this, they paid via a rubbery cheque so the payment reflected in his online banking but then 7 days later the cheque bounced - after he handed over the bike...That was in 2008...so like I say if the money isn't reflecting don't hand over any goods! I do a lot of selling on behalf of clients and won't let anything go until I am happy with the payment... Well done for being one ahead of the crooks...

    It has been said before on these forums that a good wheel builder does not need to advertise or explain the technicalities and metrics of a wheel build, his work will do the talking... Same as a good cyclist won't shout his mouth off about how he will win the race, he/she will let the legs do the talking...

    Ok so a couple of guys pulled out of the 5th, so I am doing a course this weekend (the 12th)for their benefit. Please confirm bookings at Shaunmileson@gmail.com as they are filling up pretty quick - I'm limiting numbers to 10 people per course.

    I can do it but for the time it takes the labour cost alone is prohibitive...you have to locate more or less where the hole is, undo the protective layer of tape, carefully unstitch the casing and patch the tube, then re-stitch the casing and re glue the protective tape on there...about a 2 hour job to do properly...

    I agree with Johan, you can't compare the 355 wheel (26) to a 29, I build up all the new powertap wheels and we use Pillar double butted spokes, I also tie and solder them for more rigidity - although Johan would disagree with this practice I have noted that there is a marked increase in durability and stiffness of the wheels, the other note is to use the maximum spoke tension that the rim will allow or a fraction under to allow for rider weights etc... Straight gauge spokes will not make a wheel stiffer or last longer and have no place in my book unless like has been mentioned there is absolutely nothing else available or the spokes are so short they need to be custom cut. As for 290 292 spokes they are a pretty common size and you shouldn't need to get ones cut...

    I am happy to do a wheel course as well - I build wheels for a living too...Also fork and shock basics will be covered in a separate course in due time.

    Hi Guys Thanks the support has been overwhelming! I am looking at doing a course on Saturday the 28th of June or the following 5th of July - looking at the response I may have to do both! I will cover forks lightly, but wheels, headsets, BBs, brakes and any other topics may be covered depending on requests.     Hi All Just putting it out there, was wondering who would be keen on doing a "basic bike maintenance" course sometime soon, as I have had a couple of requests for it, I would be looking at doing it from my house, I have a large triple garage that can accommodate up to 10 people. Course topics would cover just about everything needed to do a minor "pre race" service on your bike, plus any other topics that you could think of on the day, Tea,coffee, snacks will also be available as it will be about a 4 hours course. At the end you will receive a dvd containing the topics covered for your own perusal and refresher at home. Mail me at shaunmileson@gmail.com for more info/bookings...

    Look at the tool box in the one pic - there is a BB tool in there, so clearly this is one way of the bike jackers to dispose of their "earnings". This is something I have said all along with the bike jackings - they lie low, the bike gets stripped, parts probably sold right here on the hub then a year or two later the frame pops up for sale somewhere. if this frame popped up for sale on the hub with slightly more "kosher" pictures chances are it would have been sold no questions asked...

    If it has held air for the last week then leave it alone...I personally would repair it but a cut like that there is no guarantee that the repair will hold and for how long...

    A bike technician can earn anywhere from R7,500 CTC to R25,000 depending on skill and experience level. A workshop manager or technical manager can earn much more. WOW!!! that's news to me...25k...I dunno so much about that...never heard of a mechanic earning that kinda dosh.

    It has taken me 10 years to get to a point in this industry to be comfortable, many shops will take advantage of their staff, qualified or not, so just be aware of that. I have worked for a few high profile shops where the owner pleads poverty when you ask for more money but then gets in his cayenne and goes home to his big house... I could teach you anything you want to know as I do already run mechanics courses...and like I said I have 10 years experience...

    I agree I have seen them too, If I personally have to make/answer a call/text I pull over while I'm riding my bike...BUT I too am guilty of occasionally making a call/texting whilst driving a car...I do make a concerted effort to be more aware of my surroundings though when doing so...Doesn't make it right still.

    true the mention of cell phones...I commute either by bicycle or by scooter and probably 9 out of 10 people are looking at their phones in rush hour traffic....
