  1. In theory (and it doesn't always happen because of the red tape) ANY unit that transmits a radio frequency be it 2.4Ghz - (Hobby/Wifi/most others inc ANT+), 35MHz (Hobby), 27MHz (hobby-ground based, amateur radio), ANT+ or BLE MUST be approved by ICASA...
  2. Yes ICASA needs to approve it to make sure that the TX doesn't transmit more than the claimed values - in case you ride past parliament and accidentally jam all the signals there and from what I have read (stand to be corrected) they need a operating unit in their offices to test and then approve so if Cape Cycles don't have this yet then this is where the hiccup may be. Like has been mentioned, they may also want documents of the design etc which SRAM may not like as it opens doors for competitors to spy etc... OR Cape Cycles may just pay a bribe and get the stuff approved double quick...
  3. The thing I like is that the down tube is straight, makes for a stiffer front end...and to prevent the fork hitting the tube Trek came up with a neat little device in the head set called the Head Lock that stops the steerer/fork from turning too far and hitting the down tube...
  4. Agreed, but the only PM I would purchase 2nd hand would be a PowerTap hub as at least if the electronics fail, they can replace the electronics, still not cheap to do but at lest do-able (locally)...also they have a decent upgrade path i.e. a 2005 hub could be updated to a 2016 G3...I also saw recently they had a trade in policy recently where you could get discounts on a new system for trading in your old system....that makes sense to me...
  5. I'm pretty sure they have accommodated all of the lower part of the dropper post to go in, and if you need it lower than that then you are on the wrong size bike.. Having said that tho I did have a client once who rode a small size and couldn't ride a dropper cuz we couldn't get it low enough...in that sort of case there would have to be a compromise i.e. ride a standard post and don't have a dropper...
  6. Yes, but remember they have done this - like mentioned in the DC Rainmaker review - to accommodate the US and Northern Hemisphere, they release the trainer now in their summer and get all the bugs/production runs sorted before their winter...so yes it won't be available for the southerners winters....
  7. Exactly! so if they secure forex now at lets say 15:1 then the rand strengthens and drops to 13/14:1 in September...the pricing will be waaaay out..
  8. That is one item, try bring in a container full? yes to a certain degree I'm sure the costs are absorbed in what you pay in the store, but also don't forget that shipping a few units around the States is the same as me sending something via Postnet to Cape Town...relatively cheap. I'm sure Bicycle Power's freight forwarding/customs clearance people don't operate for free either so there has to be a cost involved in getting a fair number of these units in either by air or sea...
  9. As above....
  10. looks like they're using this camera... https://360fly.com/ EDIT: ok maybe not...it looks like a whole bunch of GoPro's stuck together....
  11. Stephan Sahm + E-bike = Mechanical doping??? Just kidding...
  12. Ask yourself why is it happening? what is the common denominator? is it your LBS changing the cable every time - if so is it their way of making money out of your wash and lube? Is the cable snagging/breaking in the same place? if so why? then you may come up with a solution to the problem....as mentioned above there cannot (or very highly unlikely) be an inherent fault with your bike or the manufacture thereof to cause the issue...
  13. I hear what you are saying, but I grew up with both parents smoking around me and my sister, and I don't think we have any long term issues. Neither of us smoke now...why? because we made the choice not to...Yes we both tried it and didn't like it so we stopped... My father stopped smoking when he had a bad dose of pneumonia and my mom still goes...not to the benefit of her health but that's her choice, she smokes around my kids and they are not sickly - at the age of 7 and 8 they have already made the choice not to smoke as they have seen what it has done to granny...
  14. Lets not forget DCM Chrome days when MK, RC and BS were all team mates....just saying
  15. That is correct yes, the Garmin speed/cadence will be picked up by the iPhone key and be displayed on the screen in the app, there is no need for the Garmin head unit to be present.
  16. Bluetooth (BLE) CANNOT connect TO the Garmin, the Garmin does not listen in BLE (cannot pick up the signal from trainer/HR) it only talks in BLE to your smartphone. You still need a smartphone/tablet/PC to operate the trainer, either in BLE OR ANT+. CycleOps are apparently working on a dual band trainer but right now you have to choose between the two. Some Samsung phones and tablets have ANT+ built in and thus can be used to control an ANT+ trainer, the Garmin accessories can then be used as is and the data can be captured by the Garmin as well... Apple products only have BLE so to then use the ANT+ trainer and accessories you would need a Wahoo key to pick up the ANT+ signal. If you have a BLE trainer and accessories then you cannot use the Garmin for anything. There is no difference between ANT+ and BLE in terms of connectivity and functionality, they are slightly different frequencies in the same band. Also ANT+ needs a code to connect (all done automatically) whereas BLE does not. Have a look at their site for compatibility charts: http://www.cycleops.com/virtualtraining/compatibility Most apps that are used to control the trainers (CycleOps Virtual Training, Zwift etc.) will all transfer the data of your ride to Strava etc. anyway, so if you are uploading your Garmin data to Strava then don't fret... the app will do it for you.
  17. Thanks for the link, and yes I was on the site after googling w2w 2015 results...
  18. Fantastic ride but their website needs some serious updating, I can only see the results from 2013...
  19. I love it! Everyone comments on the price being "so expensive" do yourself a favour, build (and by that I mean get a cnc machinist to machine something) yourself a mold. Then buy the highest grade carbon that you can get your hands on - short of registering your business as a weapons (read jet fighter) manufacturer, and build your set of rims cheaper - I DARE YOU! understand that the Taiwanese build mass market, they have a production line of 20 molds that have been used moer tu and the shape is no longer quite accurate, the grade of carbon is mediocre to say the least etc so yes you can get a carbon rim for R12.50 is it a quality rim like this? NO. As a wheelbuilder I k@k myself when someone brings me a fing tong rim as the thing has an uneven ERD (look it up) if you look inside the rim there are lumps of resin, patches of carbon - its ugly...then there are no max spoke tensions listed so how tight can I build the wheel? I am sure that as the market grows and sales pick up, the price may come down as these guys can now justify bulk orders of raw materials and more molds to get more product out etc. I wish these awesome chaps ( I met them and the one thing that resounds is their passion) all the best and hopefully they are the next Enve killers!
  20. If I may ask - why is that your preference?
  21. The bonus regarding the battery life is that you can buy a set of AAA batteries literally anywhere and relatively cheap. they can be changed on the road as well as you just need a 6mm allen key - which is found on 99% of multi tools carried...
  22. Lost out on a UK job cuz I didn't have this qualification - definitely gonna do it!
  23. Its a double edged sword...you need experience to get the "job" and you need the "job" to get experience... As I said before, not getting paid - not going.
  24. Oh just read the article...UNPAID Voluntary position....this is my gripe, you put your hand up and say yes, ok so the trip is all paid for (one assumes) does that include a per diem (spending moola)? and what of my time off my real job? I would have to take unpaid leave to go for the "experience"...I have had enough experience running round after pro's for free thank you...Time to get paid.
  25. How much are CSA paying for the trip...?and my visa etc...and its cutting it a bit fine to get visa's etc sorted
