  1. I take your point about accountability Grumps, but for me the issue comes down to SA driving above all else. And when I say that, I include the time I spend in my car. I feel less safe driving to the Eastern Cape to see my mom-in-law than I do going for a four hour ride on my bike. During which I do not feel safe either.. but maybe you can see what I'm getting at. The biggest stress and source of premature death in this country is motorised transport. As soon as I have the same life expectancy as a road-user in a first world country, I will absolutely, when cycling, start thinking about stopping at every stop street and traffic light. Until then, and as long as SA drivers continue to murder my friends and family I will think about making it home alive. One last thing - to all the thread-starters and furious cyclists hating on other cyclists because they jumped a light 'while I was track-standing' or wtf else. Please can we put a stop to this fantasy that cyclists are dying on the road because they are not well-liked enough. I'm never sure whether I should laugh or cry when I read this BS.
  2. Don't worry, I am thinking about my family. And generally preventing the orgy of death on our roads. I thought that was clear in my follow-up post.
  3. The basic premise that more law-abiding cyclists will protect us from death on the road is fine, in a world where every single driver on the road is also a fellow cyclist who has decided to up their driving game as well. But here is the reality : many cyclists were *** drivers before they were cyclists, and will remain so. No amount of lycra and carbon will change this. The evidence is right here on this thread - the stoopid, repeated ad-nauseum premise that we must put our round bike pegs in the square car hole, and hang number plates off them. Death on SA roads is 99% down to driver negligence and drunken driving. Stopping your bike at every stop street will not put any kind of dent into this hard reality. Rather learn to drive better, and encourage everybody you know to do the same. Keep your eyes open for drunk drivers, and report them immediately before they kill someone. This was my contribution to preserving all of your asses this festive season.
  4. holy moly not this crap again. Festive season death toll : 1279 as of 5 days ago, probably a hundred odd more by now - willing to bet 99% license plate bearing vehicles Cyclist running red light death toll : 0
  5. This road is off the Cape Cobra route, between Simonstown and Glencairn - the military climb, aka 'The Wall' - about 20% near the top. Pete Calitz who appears in the blog post has 4th place on Strava on this climb, Charles Keey has the top spot and the Colonel is in 2nd, all Cobra times. http://app.strava.com/segments/628899
  6. hopefully they will ride in Barloworld kit and set a new course record
  7. What are the races? The Main Road is open in Kalk Bay for season, but I presume based on Fand's post the races are still cancelled. What is the updated excuse for cancelling bike racing within a 100km radius of my house?
  8. I have a theory that only 10% of the members here are cyclists. The rest are bored computer programmers with small dicks and unnecessarily large cars.
  9. I was in my office tapping out some html, John is in Thailand, the other guys I couldn't tell you No Daikin team, some of the guys are riding for Focus though.
  10. Not a hope in hell those roadworks will be done by September 2013. Over 4 years to get to where they are now, and this is the most problematic stretch to Clovelly corner - they are going to take twice as long to do it. Organisers need to do as DJR suggests and look further South. The reality is we need new routes and new races. PPA needs to step up and put the riders money which we have entrusted to them to good use.
  11. Brookes low cal squash. Passion Fruit is my favourite.
  12. Anybody have a wind-assisted record to share? Mine is Kalk Bay to Sunningdale, where the West Coast Express starts. Sub 1 hour - 43km. Edit - that's solo - no drafting benefits, besides the draft up my shaft
  13. Ja, I did 70k's, left home 4.50pm from Kalk Bay, round the point, to Scarborough, Misty Cliffs, turn around and back the same way, blew the cobwebs out
  14. Guys, if you have not yet done so, please do as Peter suggests and vote here : https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/122825-ppa-how-much-funding-should-the-association-retain-annually-ie-not-spend-on-cycling/ Enough votes and we can put the numbers in front of PPA and start getting some answers.
  15. The clincher for me is that they are the ones with the funds - our money - available to do it. Others like Cyclelab - will run it as a business, Hendrik Lemmer - small budget, WPCA - also lack resources - are capable of putting on events and have done so in the past. Anyways, like I say, I'll wait to see what happens when the summer league races are announced. I'm not getting up at 3.30 every weekend to race in the Boland, seriously I'm over it. I look forward to my local events every year and when they are gone so is my interest in belonging to PPA.
  16. It's not harsh when they refuse to address the issue. They're also not the only outfit capable of putting on races. If I didn't ride for a road team I would have no issue whatsoever cancelling my membership and hitting the mountain every chance I get.
  17. How about some Red Hill lap racing? This has been done in the past. Andrew Wheeldon does it every year with minimal funds through his BEN Bikes NGO. Very little traffic to contend with down there.
  18. So what you're saying here is that PPA are the only service provider so we must just take what we're given and get on with it? Never mind that they are sitting on our money whilst our races get cancelled? At the very minimum I'd like some open and honest communication from them regarding the funds they have in reserve and what they intend to do with them.
  19. PPA have massive reserve funds, contributed by us, the paying members. You cannot tell me some kind of contingency could not have been planned for, so that the members could have got what they paid for?
  20. Move the races further South. Also, the roadworks are opposite Kalk Bay Harbour. I'm looking at them now. Nowhere near Ou Kaaps.
  21. I want to know what is happening with the PPA fees I have been paying for the last few years that are now sitting in offshore accounts whilst my racing wheels gather dust in the garage.
  22. What am I training for exactly? At this rate I am not renewing my PPA membership, will sell my Zipps and put the money towards mtb. What a ******* joke.
  23. Galeforce SE = 6% virtual hill, 36km long, Kalk Bay to Cape Point. Then freight train it all the way home @50km/h
  24. I think Zabriskie had the record too at one point, set in 2006 2005 - the sub 20k record. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWHyAQlmKSs#
  25. Ja, if I remember correctly Millar had a huge tailwind on that occasion. There's a youtube clip somewhere. This was of course also before he reinvented himself as self-appointed ambassador for clean cycling.. Edit: here's the clip, stage 19, it was raining, Ullrich went balls to the wall and crashed trying to take yellow off Armstrong http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwhKLxdkEX4
