  4. At Clarens this year, a top female rider got her chain properly stuck. Apparently no-one was able to extract it using brute force (yes, she was good looking and had plenty guys stop to give assistance). I stopped to help (I needed the stop to deal with cramps, and was near the back of the field anyway). My solution was to break the chain (she had no idea what a chain breaker is) and was about rejoin the links (with the jammed bits cut out) when the organisers arrived to pick her up in a bakkie. Goes to show that there are plenty riders out there, who don't know the basics, and who have no idea how to "maak 'n plan" when needed.

  8. And if you're up for a proper challenge while in Clarens / Fouriesburg, pop into Lesotho and ride the Mafika Lisiu pass (3090m altitude) on the way to Katse Dam. http://blog.getaway.co.za/files/2011/05/View-from-the-top-of-Mafika-Lisiu-Pass-at-3090-metres1.jpg http://www.lesothotours.co.za/Images/English/Mafika%20Lisiu%20pass%20Large.jpg
  9. For a "lower end" 29 HT, you can always look at the Momsen LA329 http://www.momsenbikes.com/images/bikes/LA329_single_bike_zoom_web.jpg R9995.00 http://www.momsenbikes.com/images/adverts/la329_review_ride_may_2012_2.jpg

  12. Well chuffed Half marathon 2:08:02 187th overall Not bad for 3rd MTB race. Up from 632nd at Sabie.
  13. I see that MiWay MTB is showing Clarens next week Monday 20:30.
  14. Good 40km... Route was easier than expected, with no big nasty hills. The only really tricky bits were the occasional sand traps... trick was to keep the power on and go with the flow. Nice challenge. The last 10kms from WP3 was a bit of a drag on tired legs, but had fun. Started in Batch C, and I reckon I did it in about 2 hours. Fortunately no mechanicals - saw lots of riders with punctures and chain issues. Looking forward to the full results.
  15. Ok. Next question: Tyres are not keeping their pressure. Pump them up, and they're good for a ride, but after a day or two the pressure has noticeably dropped and I have to pump them up again. Too little sealant?
  16. Awesome Half Marathon. Great route! Really enjoyed the ride (and occasional walk). Rates MUCH higher than Sabie IMHO.
  17. I'm taking my brand new, never been ridden 29er... but it has been set up properly. No point in keeping it clean!

  19. Yip... same problem in 4ways. Stuck around for 15 minutes before someone helped out. I had a gift voucher, so I had to spend it there. If I was there spending my own cash, I would have walked out and gone to another LBS that I know is good for service and advice.
  20. Starting batch C for half marathon. First proper ride on the new Momsen. Going to be a great ride...
