  1. i know Willie well, we raced together. a true gentleman bumped into him on the road the other day, still training and also at a CM to pay tribute to a fallen cyclist. bit like a duck, very calm on top but below the surface working like hell.
  2. Wpppa was formed in 1977 to look after recreational cyclists ie ones too young or now too old to race under the wpca (my opinion) and advocate safe roads and bicycle paths. 1978 the first ‘funride’ was won by Lawrence whittikar (current wpca road champ at the time), he later became ppa chair and later csa pres. In 1996 – Wpppa – introduced their first Giro del Capo for locals, this was expanded to o/seas teams. see problem Problem – the wpppa wanted the giro on the sacf and uci calendar but because they weren’t affiliated to sacf this could not happen hence the agreement between sacf and wpppa to form csa. I think Lawrence Whittikar was the 1st csa president. The giro was given a 2.5 rating (the lowest) on the uci calendar. Ppa lost the giro sponsorship – no giro and no need to belong to csa Sascoc wants all sports associations to reflect geographics of rsa (this in itself is impractical) ie only 9 regional reps with ppa being 1 too many. Csa constitution is rewritten and ppa says it was written out – and take the gap. This is according to my unfocussed memory, i didn’t quote dates because i can’t remember the exact year. I remember 1996 because that is the year my daughter was born and i pushed her in her pram up vissershok to watch the first giro.
  3. no , i wasn't sarcastic and never will be. but i get your point.
  4. if you don't know when and how (and most importantly WHY) PPA & SACF amalgamated to form CSA then i suggest you stop commenting on this thread.

  6. my neighbour plays in a 'golf day' once a month, is always invited into a 4 ball - never paid, my in law family - the same. maybe golfers luck or they just nice people.
  7. madmarc, on 11 June 2013 - 11:19 , said: Lets not forget how this started. PPA was around long before CSA, when CSA was formed they first took out the VCA and GPPA then tried their luck with PPA but bit off a bit more than they could chew. I hope PPA tie them up in litigation untill the end of time. I have no doubt this will end up in the constitutional court, and i'm no lawyer but i think CSA will lose. just like the 2 ill informed clowns from the Wes Cape provincial goverment. most are just guessing or are clueless. the csa came about when the ppa & the sacf amalgamated. prior to that you had the sacf and the wpppa, the wpppa was formed in the 1980's, the sacf , donkeys years ago - they were corrupt and useless. none of those involved from the days of the sacf are now involved.
  8. agree, whichever way it falls i hope all those concerned who really know cycling get their acts together. csa was at its best when the ppa chairman lawrence whittikar was elected csa pres. he had the vision for the future. pity the ppa and a few oddballs got together and voted him out and Greg Till in.
  9. i've only dealt with the City of CT. between 50 - 2000 participants is deemed a small event - u need an event permit. 0-49 u don't need an event permit. then u have to adress all other issues such as will there be fireworks, disaster managment, will tents be erected, medical plan, traffic plan, parking....blah blah blah. i take out R1 000 000 liabiltiy ins cover for every event and we attract between 100 - 150 amateur racing cyclists to an event. cover costs R625 per event which is not bad.
  10. i hear what you say but as soon as u invite the public to an event , charge entry fee, give prizes then you are open to all kinds of legislation and organisers will be taking a chance if they don't get the relevant permission. do MSA or Womza belong to SASCOC?
  11. its quite simple sport is a money making business.period every sport is regulated by one national body every event is regulated by provincial goverment/municipality even the ones on private property. cycling in all its forms is a sport
  12. ccc2

    Cricket......

just bat the overs out ..... FFS ......u guys are professional cricketers
  13. maybe you start the ppa up in your area - the ppa already have the CM in their pocket in Cape Town - now i'm waiting for them to start charging entry fees.
  14. the sprint primes really made racing interesting today. sorry no photos. i was too busy on the day and the other photographer was riding. will post abridged results later.
  15. its a pity Joffers old boy knows nothing about the sport. steve had it easy. he shoots himself in the foot by ending off with 'all our profits from cycling events goes to well deserving charities, whats going to happen to them if CSA stop us from operating in this way'
  16. i also need to add , that we have to thank the ppa for the growth in club membership.it is because of the mass participation in the argus which has introduced a lot of people to the sport of cycling. clubs that only relied on their "racing' members in the past are learning very quickly to cater for the more social / recreational rider. from there you build your base membership, the racing side flows with it especially if you target the local schools for the youth. racing is a natural progression. even the ppa know this as they have evolved from pure fun ride to league racing.
  17. i beg to differ - here in the WP there are 15 clubs affiliated to the wpca - some big ie in excess of 200 members (o/riders/club 100/cyclelab/city/wannabees) some are small. let ppa compete with the clubs for our members membership. as it is, half of the members of the club who i belong to have not renewed their ppa membership becos they now only ride the Argus. btw , they aren't csa members either.
  18. the same Lance Burger SC who wrote an article in the Argus advocating that cyclist be allowed to skip red traffic lights and stop streets if no other vehicles are in the vicinity. do you really think any person involved in the legal profession is going to tell the WHOLE TRUTH. they only tell what suits their argument.
  19. at its height of popularity , league racing had about 450 competitors including all age categories. even if you just aim for elite / sub vet / competitve club racer and attract double what winter league is now attracting ie 200 racers at R1 000 a league entry. thats R200 000 less the ppa would get. 200 participants might be (i repeat might be) the difference between the ppa event making a profit or a loss. i organise winter league, with a 100 riders at R80, an event makes a profit without cutting corners. if i get 200 riders and i charge ppa rates and i ask for entry fees to paid upfront i can expand the routes from circuits to traditional road race routes. if sponsors come in i might take early pension and do it full time
  20. this whole ppa/csa debacle goes a long way back. in the old wpppa / sacf days every wpppa event had "sacf sanctioned event, held under sacf rules" even though it was a fun ride with no prize money. every event countrywide had to be sanctioned and held under sacf rules. they also had to pay over R2 a rider (now i'm going back into the 90's) everyone paid other than the wpppa. they refused outright. i can't say why it was never enforced because i was too busy cycling to care about the politics. it was only when csa was formed (wpppa dropped the wp so that they looked like a national body and not a regional one) between ppa and sacf that the ppa started paying levies when licensed riders raced in their events. now sascoc have come along and forced csa to drop ppa they are now not paying levies again and rely on a clause in the country's constitution that allows any individual or association to conduct its business free of any interference blah blah blah hence the stand off between the 2 associations. we wait with bated breath.
  21. i (we) train on that section of road most (if not raining) tuesday mornings (between 5.30 & 6am). the road is well lit, wide wit h 2 lanes in the same direction and quiet. we are well lit up with lights back & front. we don't take a chance on the pavement/cycle/jogger/pedestrian path because we ride fast and wouldn't want to meet fellow users/poles unexpectedly. i personally wouldn't ride on any road in the dark without lights and i (we) make sure that all of our group have lights.
  22. this was about 4 years ago and was included when you entered the argus. i found out when i tried to license thru my club only to be told that i was already licensed
