  1. we heard a cyclist collapsed on the cycling path at Sunset Beach.
  2. can u give examples of these.
  3. good turnout for the perde eiland dash, keith joined us for the 1st time all the way from oranjezicht. we had a steady 35kph down to p eiland into the s'easter then flew very low to big bay. lots of riders on the path. thru & off back to edge into the south easter. nice ride with little traffic. hit a little icy bubble as we approached blouberg - hhmmm - if it was solid i would have eaten it.
  4. i t boned a car at 45 kph, the 19 year old driver only saw me when i burst thru his passenger window. 8 days in hospital, with punctured lungs, broken ribs and very sore muscles on the rhs of my body. i was lucky. 2 years later got taken out by a truck - i was ridin down the lhs of backed up traffic when the driver decided to make a quick left thru the burbs. i managed to turn left with him but the cab took me out. ended up in the gutter spitting out my front teeth. the sap who witnessed the incident said i was at fault as i should have been rather splitting lanes and ridin down the middle of the double lane. i've been lucky so far.
  5. forgot to add - the last frame is still going strong 10 years later but looking a bit patchy.
  6. i went thru 3 cannondales (road pre CF) the 1st two were cracked frames after 2 years. my biggest issue first up was my lbs - after a week the bike still had not been collected for assesment by CCS (the agents at the time) so i took it there myself. at first they were a bit reluctant to deal directly with me but i got my way. 2 years later same story, but i got an upgrade, within 2 years frame cracked, replaced again another upgrade, within a year the paint on the 3rd frame started bubbling near the bottle cages. CCS disputed my claim for a new frame told me to bring it back when its cracked. gave them the middle finger and sold the bike for 2k to a friend. i was advised later i should have taken it up with Cannondale in the USA. the yanks are big into customer service.
  7. just cut out of a minuture bike in hardboard painted in luminous green and stuck on the nearest pole will bring more awareness.
  8. come and ride with the City Cycling Club which are based in Edgemead. we cater for the slow & unfit on a Saturday morning. www.citycyclingclub.co.za we meet at the Libray/community Hall at 7.00am
  9. i think the "1.5m message" is a waste of a mesage. its subliminal, people(motorists) see it but don't take notice. its the problem we cyclists have with motorists, we are invisible to them, they can't seem to judge where we are on the road in relation to their vehicle whether its them passing us, turning right and cutting us off, turning into our right of way. they just take chances with us knowing that we are more alert and will take drastic evasive action to avoid a collision. my 2 cents
  10. OMW . RIP Burry
  11. where will you be stayin when i C Town?
  12. like SeaBee said , go slower. find a gear (15/17 on a 4 to 5% gradient) where your cadence is 50 to 60 and your HR is in the correct zone. if your HR is too high pick an easier gear but keep cadence in 50-60 and yr HR will come down. if u haven't a cadence measurer then count yr number pedal strokes for 15 seconds x 4 (12 - 15 per 15 secs give you the 50-60 per minute)
  13. yes, yes , yes. 1st one for 2013. we split into 2 groups immediately. 1 for the Elite (some of these riders finished consistently in top 10 of league) and then the older toppies. good workout on our 9 k circuit.
  14. City Cycling Club is based in Edgmead - just come ride, no pressure on joining us or buying kit or anything like that. if u like us you'll join. we have quiet a few members who commute out to us from Gardens,Oranjezicht so we must be doing something right. i think the Cyclelab shop in C Town might also have rides, if not, try Bowmans Cycles they used to meet at the shop during the working week. there are no cycle clubs in Cape Town's CBD. We used to be based at Green Point Stadium but got evicted by the City Council - we were established in 1891, a loyal CTown club and we got treated like trash.
  15. i just had a setup done thru Renay - i highly recommend. i now have fallen in love with my bike again. i changed frames a year back. did the set up myself "KOPS" like always but just did not feel right. with ergo fit , my seat was marginally too high and he lowered my handlebars by 1 spacer. i now ride like a new man. no exaggerations.
  16. maybe he's in trainin and will make a comeback in 2013.
  17. thanks - i felt a bit dead on this morning's ride but i think it was the excesses of xmas.
  18. Road bike and get bike fitted. nothing better than a smooth piece of tar at speed with your buddies.
  19. i have been on a low (no junk food) carb diet since the beginning of December - no bread, biscuits, crisps, sweets, carbonated drinks, pasta, cereals, rice, potatoes. it has thrown the family meal into a bit of a spin (kids 16 & 20 think i'm wierd) but i just make myself a salad instead of rice/tatties/. we always have veggies with our meal. wife is more intrigued than anything else, reason being, i weight 73 kgs , 1,72 m (was 74+ during winter holidays). my ideal racing weight is ±70 kgs. my wife runs and weights 57 kgs, so we aren't a 'big' family and have never watched what we eat. i have had no cravings yet but am worried about 'bonking'(this is a cycling term for hitting the wall for those that don't know) because my meals are maybe lacking some nutrients. read in this thread about one of the bloggers taking magnesium and potassium supplements to stop cramping. my biggest problem is finding food with 'good fat' ie , its almost about impossible to find any dairy products that is full cream everything is 'low fat'. inbetween meal snacks are also a problem, i used to love a wholewheat bread sandwich with salami/cheese or peanut butter/jam, now it is fruit or a tin of sardines/cocktail tomatoes/grated cheese and mayonaise on provita/matsos/ryevita (i don't read labels so i don't even know if this is an appropiate snack or not. any pointers / advice
  20. they have strong experienced riders, if they back the right man then they'll be dictating in 'league'.
  21. no, i've been involved in amateur sport all my life. played for the same football club and cricket club for years. saw players come & go (called them kit collectors as they would dissapear with a club jersey at the end of the season) cyclists are the same. nothing against them, making the best from what they have even if its just a pair of socks.
  22. paarl boxing day - been going for the last 100 or so years. i hear the whole of Tasol are here to make sure on of there riders take the 25 miler 3 years in a row. if u mean organised ride as opposed to fixed cog rides - city cc ride every sat & sun, 7 bells from edgemead, will also ride new years day. pm me or go to www.citycyclingclub.co.za
  23. see you next tuesday. you mean 'see you next tuesday'
  24. mtb, roadies, trackies never had a problem with greetin or being greeted and i've been on the road for 23 years. this subject is so a*al its unbelievable. our group of about 50 passed a mtb'er the other day (like he was lookin for parking) and as i greeted him he said 'the only one to greet' !!! did he expect all of us to greet him and would he have greeted us all back?
