    Give it a TRI

For the duo next week, not a problem... but got thinking yesterday for the XTerra - surely after the swim all traced of shammy cream will be gone. Soooo... is that one of those what happens in T1 stays in T1 situations? Or how do you get around that problem? For tri’s I use Bepanthon as a chamois cream or the many free sample I get which appear to be more or less a scented version of it. It’s super greasy and it doesn’t seem so wear off even after full IM distance. I’m going to be doing some Xterra training at the venue over the next two weeks. PM me if you want to join me same applies to anyone else wanting to check out the routes and or swim course.

Tell me about it. If I could have those days again!!! It was also in the early 2000's so videos and photographs were not as readily available. I have a few photo's but none of them when we are doing anything exciting.

I sailed an imported Murray 18 in Europe for 2 years. They are amazing boats to sail. But also very expensive to run. I found once I'd sailed one of those in 30 knots no other sailing in any conditions was quite as scary.

I did my first full IM this year and my recovery weeks were still quite intense in the last 12 weeks. I would recommend keeping the training more or less what you are used to in the build up to the 12 week program and then give it 100% for those weeks. If memory serves me correctly my dip from the hard week to the the recovery week was most noticeable at the weekends where a 6hr ride became 4hrs and a 30 something km run became 20 something km's which wasn't what I had expected as far as 'recovery weeks go'. But it worked and I finished comfortably and performed better than I had expected. The training is well worth it I hope to do another one soon when I can properly commit to the training Good luck and enjoy it.

I had a pretty tough race. I really enjoyed it though. I came in in 5:25. That’s a very good time for a first attempt Mark. Well done.
  6. Anyone else still not seeing their classes reflect on their profiles. I have booked online and attended three classes first one was last Tuesday and I have nothing. Edit; I just checked today and I'm 3/4. One more tomorrow.

I am going to do the Ultra this weekend at Midmar. I haven't done it before and I don't know the area either. I've heard the weather will be quite favorable.

I definitely agree, the money could have been used to promote the other of the classes you mention for team racing. The 420 does have a local fleet albeit a bit small and European second hand dinghies are very good value. Seeing as its an feeder class for the 470 I would have thought its in SA sailings interest to have a strong fleet.

I also don't sail dinghies anymore but A friends son is currently moving out of oppies and along with his friends would be keen to buy some 420's and it would help if there are more racing regularly. These boats have been totally re rigged so yes they could be rigged as 420's but at a high cost. I even heard that the people behind this decided to use a different rudder because they considered it would perform better. If those boats were kept original and made available at any level especially the development groups to bolster a fleet something really good may have come out of the current sailing youth. Instead its team racing only for these boats and the small group of youngsters I know of will probably disperse in the various fleets, (or MTB).

http://sailing.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/TSL-by-Hamilton-Slater-768x455.jpg These team racing boats irritate me a bit. Why invest so much in yet another fleet which has no global representation. These modified 420's could have simply been 420's. They could have been used to get the current younger generation of sailors racing in all formats not just team racing. Many people team race in 420's, you just take the kite and trapeze off and you're away. Lighter kids OK maybe get a smaller main (but team racing being a bit complex is not usually thought of as a young kids discipline). There seems to be a desire to re invent all the time here, and although SA have come up with some good designs especially for the local conditions. Surely with such a small sailing community surely inclusiveness should be a priority so I feel this was an opportunity missed. Team racing is great fun and creates tactically astute sailors SA could still have had that without the modifications and then have a fleet of + 30 boats a the 420 nationals. This investment seems like a lot of money which could have been better spent.
  11. I have completed the 2 challenges so far. I have not had to change much apart from doing some hill sessions instead of sitting on my IDT luckily the weather was good and I've enjoyed it. I normally do a 4hr ride every weekend so this won't be too hard. I assume that stopping for a coffee will be OK as I'm not sure how they will know anyway.
  12. I read that you cannot sell the entries. If the general population are as negative towards it as the people on here then my chances are up. I have been a VA member for many years and I might finally get rewarded for my loyalty. The challenges seem OK although the 5000m ascent will require a bit more planning than my usual riding I wonder how folks can mange who live in relatively flat areas will manage. Not looking forward to 4 Spin classes.
  13. Well done on what sounds like a tough race. Many years ago and way before I was into triathlon I visited Weymouth quite frequently, now it is one of my must do events. Its a beautiful place much like a lot of the South West coast. Thanks for the race report.

I'm with Dave303 here Especially at the beginning of a swim I may partially or completely miss a breath every + - 10 strokes. The tumble turn puts me more out of breath than a usual turn would even if I sneak a breath just before. As well as the aerobic development it simulates what its like to take a bit of chop or a foot to the face and swim on whilst regaining a normal breathing pattern. Also by doing tumble turns mean you do a little ab crunch 80 - 160 times per swim. Good for people like me who neglect their core work.

In a few weeks I will start race preparation training but as its my first time I do not know what that will look like. I started with my current coaching group in the middle of last year and my weeks tend to look a bit like this; Mon - AM swim 1:00 - 1:30 - PM Run 0:40 - 1:00 Tue - AM ride 0:50 - 1:45 - PM Run );40 - 1:20 Wed - AM Swim 1:00 - 1:20 PM rest Thur - AM Ride 0:40 - 1:30 PM Run 0:30 - 1:00 Fri - AM Swim 0:40 - 1:00 PM Run 0:30 - 0:50 Sat Ride 2:30 - 4:30 Sun Run 1:15 - 2:00 I still do intervals in nearly all my sessions except the long rides at weekends. Its hard but its working out well so far.

It is basically west coast sea temperatures as the course is reasonably close to the entrance and not in the parts after the narrow passages. I didn't enter last year but at the previous two races it was first shortened and wetsuit compulsory. The following year it was cancelled. This year is earlier so hopefully the swim will go ahead but I'll be surprised if wetsuits are not compulsory. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes I think they are not allowed. I don't use them in races. It took me a while before I started to enjoy it like I do now. Maybe you will too. I find using Strava for running also helps my motivation. Where I live there are no where near as many users for running as there are for cycling, it's far easier to get some good positions on the leaderboards. If your just starting out you will be regularly breaking personal records too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi Dullscapel, I got into triathlon because as a youngster I was a competitive swimmer and after experiencing MTB racing for a couple of years I wanted to enter an off road tri as I thought I might do well. The running was always at the back of my mind. I'm in my fourth year of Triathlons now and the biggest surprise in this whole experience is how much I enjoy the running. I have wireless headphones so I always have my favourite music going without flapping wires and I kind of just switch off. I enjoy my cycling more but nothing gives me the sense of achievement like my long distance runs.

I have always gone for no socks. I tend not to wear socks on the run either. In the build up to events I do some training without socks to get my feet used it and try and identify where the soreness might come from. Before the race I apply anti chafing cream liberally to those areas of the shoe and it seems to work for me. I'm doing my first full distance IM this year so for that and anything longer than a 70.3 I'll be wearing socks.

I agree with jonnow about not adjusting your set up this close. Is it the Cape Ultra you are doing? if so its a bit hilly so there will be a fair bit of riding without the need for an aero position. I had a bad experience when I used my road bike with aero bars as I couldn't get the set up quite right and they messed my knee's up for the run. I think it's best to stay as comfortable as you can on your bike leg. Lots of people will be their on road bikes with no bars. Enjoy the race.

Hi all With the Cape Ultra happening in two weeks, can anyone who has raced in the MiWay Ultra events comment on what to expect at water points?

I recently wanted an entry level bike for Triathlons and I looked at the Merida Warp, the BMC Time Machine and the Cannondale Slice. I would have liked to consider more but I actually found it hard to find a bike in the right size and price range, without having to wait week's or month's. The Warp had rather poor reviews for crosswinds so that was quickly discarded. The BMC was only available in a shop across state and for more than was quoted by my LBS. So after that very limited bit of research it was the Cannondale Slice. I bought it brand new and quickly took it for a proper independent bike fit so I could return it things didn't size up. The slice is UCI compliant but is specifically designed for Triathlons and what is even better (for me) is that according to the marketing it might lose a little in the aero stakes, but makes up for it in comfort and set up ability. With it being my worst discipline I am hoping helps with my run and so far so good.
  25. I agree but so far I have not paid a cent despite missing two goals (not sure how I got away with that). Twice they have changed the system so it wasn't as easy for me. I have kept my fingers crossed they would fix it and so far I'm glad I had my glass half full.
