I think it's simply cause he's a fantastic climber, enjoying the best form of his life so far, and that's what climbers do. Go hard uphill. It's like a Contador, or Roland, if the road goes up, and they have good legs, their instinct takes over.

The rating of a climb doesn't come solely from it's length and gradient, but also from it's place in the stage and the race overall. I remember seeing a comparison of climbs here a long time ago, and Boulders ranked as a 3/4 cat only.
