  1. Oh purleeeze..... I come (since 1989) from MTB (never rode a road bike in my life, apart from a cast iron drop car BSA three speed in the late 60's), hence my emphasis on mountain bikers.... plus, access issues are more likely to arise from the abuse of the MTB "fields of play" rather than littering on a public road...... which, IMHO, is no less of a travesty......
  2. I think that this incident (plus innumerable similar ones) highlights the difference between mountain bikers and people who ride mountain bikes........ or maybe, to be more general, between cyclists and those who ride bicycles.........
  3. Ja, my encounters have been top-notch..... communications great and delivery very prompt......

My second..... 22 years after my first.......
  5. I use a really old H.A.W.G. .... a very good piece of gear........
  6. Rear jockey? Anchor? What are they?
  7. Assonance.... not alliteration..... but you're excused anyway.....
  8. The Province & Location seem to be at odds.....
  9. One huge advantage of a bicycle is that it's relatively quick 'n easy to dismount to walk the bits that are beyond one's skill level (which, in my case, is fairly frequent) ...... the decision making process relating to this is made even more straight forward if a course is pre-ridden....... remounting should also not pose too many time-related problems....... the choice to take a risk by exceeding technical ability is, of course, always available... hence the required waiver....
  10. Oh... and parking lamps (lights)..... NRTA Regulation 165 (2) No person shall operate on a public road a motor vehicle of which only the parking lamps are lighted while such vehicle is in motion.
  11. Not legal dude...... for any fog lamps....... both annoying and dangerous, IMHO....... NRTA Regulation 163 (6) No person shall operate on a public road, a motor vehicle while any fog lamp fitted to such vehicle is lit, except in conditions of poor visibility caused by snow, fog, mist, dust or smoke.
  12. We must accept that any TDF result may only be finalised ten years from now........ by the way, is this REALLY the 100th running of Le Tour? What about the recent ones that have been declared "winnerless"......
  13. It's not about the bike......
  14. And some (one, at least) end up being cricket commentators....... and legends........
  15. Road Traffic Act Regulations: "178. Lamps on pedal cycle 178. (1) A pedal cycle may be fitted in front with a lamp emitting a white light, the intense part of the beam of which shall, when such pedal cycle is on a reasonably level road, strike the surface ahead of such pedal cycle at a distance of not less than three metres and not 178more than 30 metres. (2) A pedal cycle may be fitted with one or more lamps emitting a red light directly to the rear."
  16. Yup..... this year....... http://velonews.comp...of-bikes_274377 and.... http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/thieves-steal-team-type-1-bikes-and-equipment
  17. Coca Cola contained cocaine in the early days... hence the name...... I wonder when it was removed from the recipe.....
  18. This all sounds very similar to what happened when ASA stuck it's nose into the annual Great Train Race (a social relay road running race, against the Apple Express narrow gauge steam train, between PE and Loerie)........ it was killed off finally in around 2004, IIRC.... very sad indeed....
  19. Oh dearie me..... if it's an old school hardcore technical anaerobic lap race, and not a marathon-type 90% gravel road course (which are ideal for roadies & ex-roadies, especially those riding full sussers), things could get interesting......
  20. Strange but true..... NATIONAL ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS, 2000: 311. Riding on pedal cycles 311. (1) No person shall ride a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is seated astride on the saddle of such pedal cycle (no honking/standing up?) (2) Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time (remember that a "pedal cycle" falls within the definition of a vehicle in terms of the Act: ""vehicle" means a device designed or adapted mainly to travel on wheels............."). (3) No person riding or seated on a pedal cycle on a public road shall take hold of any other vehicle in motion (no support vehicle assistance?) (4) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side (no swerving for potholes or road debris?) (5) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any person, animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which prevents him or her from exercising complete control over the movements of such pedal cycle. (6) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand on the handle bars of such pedal cycle (no undressing or "look ma's"?) (7) Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road. (8) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road or a portion of a public road set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, shall do so in such manner that all the wheels of such pedal cycle are in contact with the surface of the road at all times (no wheelies, bunny hops, etc?) 201. Warning devices 201. (1) Subject to the provisions of sections 58(3)and 60 of the Act, no person shall operate on a public road— (B) a pedal cycle, unless it is equipped with an efficient warning device which is in good working order and, when used, capable of giving adequate warning of its approach (Isabel on a bicycle?)
  21. This debate reminds me of the late '50's/early 60's controversy regarding the advent of supermarkets in SA..... cries of anguish from corner grocers, butchers, dairy outlets, etc, etc........ it was indeed the death knell for many of these "Ma & Pa" shops, but to the advantage of the consumer, due to greater buying power, economies of scale and supposedly lower prices......... please note the word supposedly...... we have no way of knowing whether or not we are currently benefiting from lower prices (nothing to compare the supermarket prices against)...... maybe we are left with an oligopoly that manipulates/fixes prices anyway?
  22. Thanks very much.... I'll be staying in Kenilworth so they will be very convenient....
  23. Does anyone know of a place in Cape Town that can fit/adjust/service Rohloff (geared hub) components? Thanks!
