  1. Except that is really for a full set (front and rear). So a R3000 product (Which is what Elixer 7's can go for) can be sold for R1699 it seems? Unless I'm missing your point here, it seems this proves mine.
  2. Just handed in my bike at the shop for boxing. It's official now!!! Oh, and I may have tripped on the way out and bought a TLD A1 as a pre-trip gift
  3. You do realise the point of my post was the e-mail which did not contain the info you refer to, and not the actual item on the site as listed?
  4. I find sarcasm which is not laced with cynicism rather funny.
  5. See guys? THIS is what clever humor looks like
  6. I don't know whether it was done intentionally. I think it was to generate clicks, but no, I don't have proof. But let's look at the facts: XT brakes for a pair are NOT R4 000.00. That is common knowledge to any person who cycles more than just once in a while. The e-mail was worded specifically to present itself as a special offer. This creates the expectation that the price should be better than normal. R1539 for a side is in fact going rate for XT brakes so nothing "special" about that. As has been demonstrated in this thread, it is more common than not to refer to front and back as a set. ----- This also just popped into my head. Is this not very similar to the old "you've won a prize, just come and collect it" marketing schemes used by time-share merchants?
  7. Promote it how? I sent it to friends because they may be interested. ONly then did I realise it was for something else. And for the purposes of this thread it was a great example of ambiguous marketing.
  8. You had the time to come to this thread and post a reply that made absolutely no contribution to the debate and you accuse me of "not getting on with life". Oh, the sweet, sweet tear of irony.
  9. I'm definitely not planning on taking it up with the CC. I hoped to open a discussion on marketing here, about principles in advertising and where the line is. Unfortunately most took the opportunity of pointing out how l33t they are.
  10. One man's shyster is another man's entrepreneur...
  11. Well I'm not going to write a dissertation on the law. Copying the sections from LexisNexis was easy and the sections are self-explanatory. There are standards out there and people should be held to them. Problem is we're all ok with the little lies.
  12. Oh lord. So I was comparing the two? I was pointing out the fallacy of your argument. That I'm not allowed to moan because I don't have a vested interest.
  13. Yes, I realise I'm being a tannie met 'n nat panty. Maybe I'm just in a mood today. Point remains.
  14. What is actually your point? Do you have an opinion on Gaza perhaps? Beacuse by your reasoning, only people living there are entitled to one.
  15. From the CPA: 29. General standards for marketing of goods or services.—A producer, importer, distributor, retailer or service provider must not market any goods or services— (a) in a manner that is reasonably likely to imply a false or misleading representation concerning those goods or services, as contemplated in section 41; or (b) in a manner that is misleading, fraudulent or deceptive in any way, including in respect of— (i) the nature, properties, advantages or uses of the goods or services; (ii) the manner in or conditions on which those goods or services may be supplied; (iii) the price at which the goods may be supplied, or the existence of, or relationship of the price to, any previous price or competitor’s price for comparable or similar goods or services; (iv) the sponsoring of any event; or (v) any other material aspect of the goods or services. 30. Bait marketing.—(1) A supplier must not advertise any particular goods or services as being available at a specified price in a manner that may result in consumers being misled or deceived in any respect relating to the actual availability of those goods or services from that supplier, at that advertised price.
  16. No if you actually bother reading the whole thread you would have noted that I was not interested in buying the product. I circulated it to mates. I have XT brakes already. Obviously it's not a case of buying and only then realising the issue. The e-mail circular was misleading. The site was clearer.
  17. My post referred to an e-mail which they circulated. That referred to "Set", but the linked add on the site is quite clear that it's only per side.
  18. Don't resort to straw man arguments. No one thinks a pair of glasses is two. No one thinks a pair of trousers means two trousers. Clearly from just two websites I have demonstrated that the reference to "sets" is ambiguous and potentially misleading. Why can I not insist on consistent and fair advertising?
  19. Lol. Look, I think there's a case to be made for misleading advertising. Buycycle has to know that there's a serious risk of confusion. Ok, sure, it's not of such a nature that it will "mislead" you into buying something you thought was something else. It's more a case of it being click-bait, but that in itself is crappy.
  20. That doesn't follow. Specials are popping up everywhere. Maybe it was clearance stock. Any multitude of reasons why it could be "half-price". I was surprised by the price, which is why I told my friends about it. None of them went "no, impossible". They were all "wow, great price, oh, wait..." And no I don't think I would make my name gat. There's clearly a lack of consistency in the advertising of brakes. Two main websites (CWC and CRC) are both very unambiguous in their advertising of brakes and brake sets. Buycycle clearly did it for the clicks.
  21. So a brake set is commonly accepted to be lever and caliper? Well blow me down. So how do you advertise the whole system (two levers and calipers)? http://www.cwcycles.co.za/catalog/parts/disc-brake-set And CRC seems to refer to brakes, not brake sets > http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/brakes?f=2258
  22. Anyone else feel a bit duped by Buycycle.co.za's e-mail pamphlet advertising XT brake sets for R1595.00, but when you click on the link it's clear that a "set" is for caliper and lever? I think this is classic click-bait and misleading advertising. Consumer Commissioner would have a field day with this.
  23. I like mine. Do HD front with Ardent rear. Front does go walkabout sometimes but that's 90% my poor riding ability.
  24. I call dibs on you or Karl for teammates...I'll try and keep up on the down, and wait up on the climbs
  25. I do a lot of work with residents and business people from Kaya Mandi and I can confirm that whilst they are most certainly not informal, they are a very tightknit community. Everyone knows everyone so I am with Rob in his approach to Songo.
