  1. Now there is an idea! A mass cycling event that goes on for 5 days! And Cape Town has the ideal location and weather to go with it
  2. +1 on the Bosh 12V drill. However I think mine got branded "14V". This is just a confusing sales "interpretation" - when the Li batteries are fully charged, they approach 14V. The tool, batteries and charger are identical to 12V ones. I use mine for most drilling and driving jobs. It is not too heavy. I keep a screw driver bit kit and a drill bit set in the box with the drill. I also have an adaptor to connect it to 1/4" sockets and allen key sockets. The only challenge is to keep swaping bits between screw driver and drill. For heavier drilling, masonry work, hammer drill etc, I get out the extension cord and my old corded drill.
  3. My nephew lives in Melbourne. He went camping a few days ago and they had a snap 5 day lock down. He had to stay at on at the camp site for the rest of the period and "work" on his laptop. Back in Cape Town, our second wave is falling fast. We are down to "just" 200 new infections per day and below 20 fatalities per day (Western Cape numbers). Lock down down to level 1. They estimate up to 50% of our population has been exposed to the bug. So while a "3rd" wave is a distinct possibility, it is going to take another new variant, or a complete change in social behaviour to spread the bug through the other 50% to make it happen with the intensity of the 2nd wave - even without vaccines. Which is just as well as not much is happening on the vaccine front here. Selected health workers only getting it at the moment. Then we still have to see which vaccines are actually effective against the SA variant, and how long that protection lasts. So while it is still dangerous out there - (I stay away from crowds and wear a mask when I can't avoid them) we don't have to worry about regulatory lockdowns for a while. One thing we have in common with NZ. International travel from SA is very easy to plan - postpone indefinitely!
  4. That exercise probably burnt best part of 100 Gallons of kerosene...
  5. I don't see a funding for much bike coming out from this
  6. My wife had a fall while cycling several years ago. A pedestrian stepped into the road in front of her and she came down quite hard. She was wearing her normal daily multi focals with "plastic" lenses. The lenses broke and she cut her eyebrow badly, requiring stitches. Since then we have both stopped wearing prescription glasses for cycling. Question: Are the lenses in cycling specific sunglasses tougher/safer than the polycarbonate lenses in standard optometrist prescription glasses? Are "normal" optometrist made plastic lenses deemed safe for cycling?
  7. And as ChrisF has pointed out. If you happen to be on holiday in Cape Town and you are conveniently close to CWC and go shopping there, then you should check the prices of the items you are buying on their website, before you reach the 'till. You may just find the on-line prices are lower, and if you point this out to the sales staff, they might drop the labelled price to match the on-line one. A good thing to know! I hope ChrisF enjoys his holiday break and gets in some good cycling, cause I think he won't be very motivated to post here for the next week or two. Pity for the rest of us who still have to work.
  8. But if the bike is a Harley, freedom may be curtailed when you go round corners.
  9. I live close to Spaanschemat River Road and cycle on it regularly. It is very busy with lots of cyclists. There have been incidents near the American Embasy - close to the informal settlement near Westlake. Some perps were caught a while back, which may have slowed things down. Just be sensible. Avoid cycling alone when there are no other cyclists around and leave your valuables at home.
  10. Also note that if you had a mild infection in October, you could test negative now but still experience the clinical effects (muscle pain, fatigue, increased resting heart rate etc).
  11. Just a hunch. But start with a Covid test. It is going around and most hospitals/doctors will want a test result sooner rather than later, anyway. Your experience is a bit like mine (but I was never nearly as fit as you). See https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/187043-cycling-after-recovering-from-covid-19/?hl=covid If you have, or had, covid, it could take weeks to get back to full fitness. Just be patient. What is your resting heart rate now verses beginning of October?
  12. It depends on the type of riding you have been doing. Mud and fine dust, or tar roads? So my rule of thumb for forks with coated aluminium stanchions: When you clean/lube the chain - clean the stanchions. I normally turn the bike upside down for this, which sends some oil into the foam rings. Do this regularly! If you replace your chain - then do a lower fork (self?) service. If you replace the cassette - then get a full service, fork and shock, from LBS or pro. This maybe a bit on the cheap side, but I have not damaged my stanchions - yet. If you have entry level chrome steel stanchions - ride them until the suspension tells you something is tired.
  13. Maybe something to do with PayPal terms about when a payment can be cancelled or reversed.
  14. I am sure you do care. That is why you will, as a cyclist take evasive action (or pro-active avoidance action), irrespective of the situation. The debate here is when does the action of a cyclist blocking the path of a 2 ton machine reduce the chances of a "situation" becoming an impact one, and at what stage does it exacerbate the situation? "Fault" is a secondary consideration. This about drivers and cyclists manipulating their vehicles and each other's psychologies. Up to the point when there is an impact, then the cyclist will always loose.
  15. I was not there but maybe: Peloton headed north and occupying the emergency lane plus most of northbound carriageway up to the centre line. Irritated, angry, unlicensed and/or drunk truck driver (delete any which might not be applicable) headed north overtakes the peloton using the remainder of the width of the northbound carriageway as well as a lot of the southbound carriageway on the other side of the centre line. OP heading south crosses a blind rise to encounter the above 2 heading in his direction.
  16. My own experience is that my teenage daughter got nasty "flue" symptoms, including muscle pains and some loss of taste, back in July. We contacted our GP and he advised that she was probably suffering from Covid. But due to her age and mild symptoms, she did not qualify for getting tested. She did not require medical treatment but she isolated for 14 days. We were advised that even if she was not 100% recovered after this time, she would no longer be infectious. My my wife and I had no symptoms but quarantined for the same period too. We were not tested as we were asymptomatic. First day out of quarantine, my wife and I went cycling. We went on a local ride which included a modest climb (about 200m elevation). I nearly passed out by the time I got to the top. I felt nauseas rather than short of breath, but just not well! I had to sit down on the side of the road for a while to recover before I could coast down the hill back back home. So it is likely that I had also caught the bug. I also noticed some other symptoms, like muscle pains and my resting heart rate went up from 60 to 70 bpm (sometimes more). I took another 4 weeks off exercise before I tried cycling again and then started with very short rides and taking it very easy on the hills. That was two months ago and things are slowly returning to normal. My daughter, who was running before lockdown, has now started cycling. She still mentions chest pains - which was one of the symptoms she had with the flue. I am not a competitive cyclists. I don't go very fast, but can cover fair distances. I have been cycling regularly for the last 15 years and I am generally healthily fit, but definitely not athletic. It is going to take a while before I get back to my previous level of fitness.
  17. A number of hubbers have reported in the Covid threads that they, or their family members contracted the bug. I am sure many more cyclists have been exposed. Hopefully most did not suffer severe symptoms or get hospitalised and by now, many will have recovered. Getting fit and cycling again is the next step. This thread is document the experiences of hubbers, their families and friends when they resume cycling and training after recovering from Covid 19. Please keep other Covid discussions to other threads! I will discus my personal experiences in a following post.
  18. Wow. That looks nearly as far South as Marion Island. What is it like there in winter?
  19. Turn in inside out and dunk it in sink, bath or bucket. Scrub/scrape off the worst bits. But if it is a thin layer of latex "painted" on the inside of the tyre leave it. If you scrape that off, the Ground Control 2Bliss will "weep" through the side walls until the layer reforms again.
  20. Is there anybody who can service these units in Cape Town? Otherwise is it possible to get spare parts, boards, sensors etc? I have one that has been going for a couple of decades. I have re-soldered stuff on the main board which came loose from vibration from the motor, the encoder pickup is a bit unreliable and some of the gear rack on the gate is not looking too good. But it still works ... most days.
  21. I think that was the one I saw a youngster running around with near Kommetjie at 1400 that afternoon. I saw it again round 2014, but sorry I could not stop to pick it up. It was back this year. Lying in the road again in Kommetjie. A guy motoring past on on an e-bike nearly rode over it. He took evasive action and hit a traffic cone marking between the lanes. There was a loud noise but not much blood, so I think the water bottle was OK. I will look out for it again next year, will let you know where to go pick it up ...
  22. Sounds like some of seller Agency 1 and/or Agency 2 are being economical with the truth. If you first saw the house with Agency 1 then they are going to want, and will likely get, a slice of the commission. If the seller did not accept either of the offer to purchase, before the return date on the offer, they are both invalid. If either of those contacts were accepted, then you are party to a binding contract. If this is the case I assume you would be aware of it.If the contract with Agency 2 was accepted, you may end up paying double commission. Did you tell Agency 2 that you first saw the house with Agency1.Did you pay a deposit with either offer to purchase? If there are no binding contracts, then tell both the seller and Agency 1 together what you are prepared to pay and how much commission you are willing to pay and that the commission should go to Agency 1. It is a buyers market and they will get their act together sooner rather than later. Otherwise just start looking for another property. They will get their act together and start chasing after you.
  23. And they can all be made to go a lot faster if you trade battery life for performance and overload the motor for a limited period. Or you just buy a bigger motor and battery to start with. https://www.ebay.com/itm/ebike-Conversion-Kit-36V-48V-250W-500W-1000W-1500W-Motor-bike-Wheel-20-29in-700C/163902955373?hash=item2629609f6d:m:mdB9G3xkQkEOTZEhATDNKmA&var=463504615354 48V 500W about 40-50km/h, 48V 1000W about 45-55km/h, 48V 1500W about 50-60km/h, The choice is yours!
  24. I notice that the top right quadrant of every link is chamfered. Is this chain directional? Ie is it designed to be installed with a specific side facing towards the sprocket or towards the wheel? Or are those wear marks? Do you take off the chain off the bike for cleaning? Maybe it has been overwashed, perhaps with a solvent which has caused stress corrosion cracking. If it is due to a manufacturing fault we should hear other reports of similar failures.
  25. The weight of the battery should be limited to. Easy for anybody to check.
