I understand that there were a number of issues surrounding this year's cycle tour, but the simple matter is you do not allow 35,000 cyclists the majority of whom would be categorized as inexperienced to cycle in 100 km/h winds...... this would lead to absolute carnage.

After a 4 year hiatus I only recently started revisiting the hub. My first point of call was to see if Barry was an active member as I always enjoyed his wit and insight on a wide range of topics. His joy for life was pervasive in his writing and I can only imagine that those who knew him in person must consider themselves privileged. To his family my deepest condolences, as you come to terms with his passing.... and from one misplaced Irishman to another, tonight, I'll raise a glass of single malt Irish whiskey to your memory

Another thing to consider is that any tour in SA will pre-empt the spring classics, which means you want to place a bigger focus on flat stage racing that provides ideal conditioning for these races.

If LA thinks a tour in SA is ideal for the off season, then why doesn't someone ask him to endorse it... Unfortunately with so many sporting codes competing for limited sponsorship money, you need to get it right the first time by starting with a bang. That means getting recognised international riders out here to use it as a conditioning excercise leading into the European season. If we go this route I believe we'll need to limit the number of days creating a 5 to 7 day tour as the internationals will not be wanting to ride a 2 week tour during the off season.
