  1. The Bosch Glide12 was no1 on my list. I really like Bosch blue and the glide arm design takes up a lot less space. New they are around R12k on special though.
  2. hmm that is interesting, I like AEG and that is a really good price for a 300mm mitre saw. I was ideally looking for a 250mm one. What to do, what to do.
  3. Maing a moxon? https://www.toolcraft.co.za/collections/on-promotion/products/york-moxxon-vise-kit
  4. That is quite possibly the best list I have ever seen, I couldnt agree more with it. Mostly because I did a lot of research and have the same items. You simply cant beat the value of the POF1400ACE and GEX125AE. The hand tools should also are spot on.
  5. Start by building a workbench, trust me you need one. You can either go the simple route or do what I did and use the bench building to learn how to cut joints and use them to build it. Makes it more solid and you learn most of what you need from doing it.
  6. I still have a fair sized chunk of the trunk left from the one I cut down 2 years ago. It had to be removed to do some building and I had to submit approved building plans as well as clear instructions on what I was going to do with the wood afterwards. It was a 12 page document I had to fill out, then there were two inspections and a 3 month period to get the permit to cut it down. So yup, its pretty damn difficult stuff to get hold of these days.
  7. Brian and his team are very passionate guys who know and use the tools very well. I hear sobbing coming from my credit card every time I open their webpage...
  8. Im both happy and sad for you, on the one hand you can get on with your life. On the other Im sad you have to go through this. At least there is some finality and life can continue, Im looking forward to seeing you post in here about how things are getting better sometime in the near future.
  9. I busy moving more into devops now, all of my formal qualifications are in dev but it isnt something I feel I could do full time. Im probably going to start working remotely for a company based in the states if everything falls into place.
  10. Time away isnt a bad thing so long as you pop in here and say hi from time to time. Furniture resto seems like tricky stuff, matching wood tones to fix things cant be too easy unless you can hide it inside joints.
  11. Must have been super interesting getting all the angles cut at the correct angles to make it work. Looks really cool as a finished product. Im super jealous of you guys being able to get hold of all that cool wood, here in EL the variety is limited to mostly pine and meranti.
  12. Been a while since I saw you posting on the hub so welcome back. Thats quite a workshop you have there! Those chairs in the one shot, did you make them? Some seriously skilled work those.
  13. What pants said, you turn the edges to the bushings for sizing purposes and the middle section is up to you. This pen was for a girl with fairly small hands so I made the lower section a little thinner and the top section a bit thicker so that the weight and balance feels better when writing with it.
  14. Thanks for watching. First time just yakking at a camera and I was awkward as heck!
  15. It finishes up really nicely and is super interesting to look at. Its a very flaky wood to turn though, worth it in the end.
  16. Urgh been deliberating actually posting this for a while but figured it might be worth a laugh or two for some of you. I made a youtube video of a pen I turned for a friend. It was a first video attempt so not the greatest quality but its been quite fun learning how to edit properly and I will probably do some more soon. So if you are bored at some stage its over here:
  17. Hoka Oneone on special at onedayonly today. Some pretty good prices if you were looking at trying them.
  18. Yup Im about the same place myself. Woodworking tools is another story altogether though!
  19. Honestly I havent made enough to have any to sell yet, once I turned the first one then every family member and most friends all wanted them! I gave away at least 10 slimlines at Christmas alone. Im finally busy turning myself a pen, its a wild olive fountain pen. I have always wanted a fountain so figured I would make one.
  20. I cant even recall how many times I have done that. I still have not sold a single pen(not that I have tried to) they have all been gifts but I will eventually get around to making some to sell. Which kits did you order? I have turned the Orion, JR gent, cigar, slimline and Euro ones so far. Was considering Churchill but dont want to buy the weird sized drill bits for it. On a side note I glued and trimmed a white Ironwood blank last night... that thing was so hard the barrel trimmer didnt even want to cut into it, was just annoying the wood rather than cutting. I ended up using a parting tool to trim it.
  21. I was surprised by the jr gent, its a very easy pen to turn in the end but a huge mission to start off. Man it would be such an awesome touch to send a set of pens with that project you are doing, Im sure the people would be massively stoked with that. I never really get to work with decent hardwoods so Im buying pen blanks until I can start making my own from offcuts. I also want to look into getting a pressure pot, lots of resin ideas I want to try out.
  22. Haha! I didnt get that flashback but those pens were cool. Im pretty hard to offend so it would take a whole lot more than that.
  23. I turned and finished the jr gent pen I started last night, was quite something figuring out how to assemble it. The arcylic was possibly the worst type to turn, super brittle and just generally unpleasant. I used epoxy to glue the tubes in and then turned the majority with a skew because anything else would just cause chipping. Its one of those ones where you really have to see it to appreciate how awesome that blank is, the pics dont really do it justice. In general I prefer wood but this was a nice change and it was the biggest blank I had. Next time I will be changing the shape profile and slimming it down a bit, this was the first pen of this type I have turned and the nib section looks tiny compared to the body. I have a fountain pen kit of the same type that I will probably tackle this evening, just need to decide which blank Im going to use on it.
  24. You made me go and google that... turns out I made a weapon for strangling pieces of spinning wood!
  25. When I made my first burnishing wire it was guitar string but it didnt work quite as well as I hoped. This one uses that braided steel wire you get in picture hanging kits. I turned two thin spindles and drilled a stepped hole through then tied knots in the end to embed the wire. It works really well now and I dont have to wrap the wire around fingers anymore. *edit* Found a pic of it, it dangles from the wheel of my sadly neglected roadie.
